5 years ago today on November 23rd 2004 wether you like it or not the world of MMO's were changed forever.
WoW had a shakey start due to the unprecedented demand, Blizzard even had to resort to asking retailers to stop selling WoW while they brought more servers online. In the EU you could not buy a copy of WoW between Feburary 2005 and April 2005 as blizzard stopped sending boxes to retailers.
Today WoW has over 500 servers (western/oceanic regions)
Since release every month ACTIVE subsriber numbers (not including trial/banned/canceled/inactive accounts) increased peeking in Decemember 2008 @ 11.5 million (~5 million western).
The first expansion in 2007, The Burning Crusade became the fastest selling PC game (although it was an expansion), selling 2.4 million pre-orders (western pre-orders) and 3.5 million in the first month (western sales), this feat was added to the guinuess book of records in 2008. The much anticipated 2nd expansion Wrath of the lichking sold even more 2.8 million pre-orders (western pre-orders) and went on to sell 4 million units in the first month (western sales).
Well thats enough history as I am sure you all know it.
If you log into WoW over the next week you'll find a whelping pet in your mail box.
Also the Pilgrim's Bounty ( guide #1 , guide #2 ) holiday started today, be sure to complete <The Turkinator> achievement.
Just wanna thank Blizzard for entertaining me for 5 years. Now hurry with 3.3 and cataclysm.

can't wait for the expansion, going to be fun playing a goblin plus all the areas that were re-designed will keep me entertained for awhile. I haven't play WoW for a long time. it's going to be like playing this game for the first time.

Happy Birthday WoW, one of the best games ever released.
Looking forward to the new expansion but I just hope they don't ruin Duskwood, Westfall and Elwynn forest which are my fave zones.
Happy Birthday WoW, best mmo ever.

MMORPG genre is dead. Long live MMOCS (Massively Multiplayer Online Cash Shop).
Happy B-Day Big Guy, only 5 more to go to catch up to everyone else, but one heck of a start.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)
I am starting to feel old.
Yeesh, half a decade already? Happy Birthday.
Unfortunately, no other games can last 5years and stay populated.
That translates into very limited choice, unless you enjoy game hopping every year or so.
Wake up developers, bring better games to the shelf pls. I want a few concurrent subs, not just WoW.
Happy Birthday! Now, where's Cataclysm.... I WANT IT NOW!
So that means there hasn't been a decent MMO in about 6 years then )=
Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.
EAT ME MMORPG.com!
Next week's Patch 3.3 will give you group play in PvP and PvE from level 10 to 79.
That's more than enough to wait another 6 more months.
Best gameplay value was always one year after launch (main game and expansions) because of the content options.
Now you can rerun every single leveling dungeon or get experience by just doing PvP.
A wet dream of every on line group play: 24/7.
Grtz Blizzard: 5 years and still adding gameplay options.
Let's say Cataclysm is an insurance of another 2 years full steam ahead.
wait ...
Grouped World PvP AND exp?
thats awesome.....
18 posts before the first hate troll came in that didn't congratulate Blizzard.
That must be a new record for mmorpg.com.
I guess you missed the second post following the OP.
Oh and I forgot,

but in the meantime I'll level a tank (or a huntard) in 3.3 to have a last view of the old content."
Yap, i'll be doing that too, most likely an orc shaman...
