Like the above poster i thought i wouldve liked wow since so many people played it but it just didn't cut it for me, but that could be because im just sick of themepark games too.
To a WoW player Ryzom feels like your doing nothing but killing mobs all day.
I enjoy Ryzom but I wont lie to you.
It's a social game with a group focus but alot of the time you spend your days farming mobs or digging the entire time and you dont raise skills fast either.
Im old school so I like hunting packs of mobs and grouping for rare spawns but many a wow player have been turned off by the repetitve nature of the skill up process.

Just a warning.
Yeh after playing for about a week now im getting worried about content, this was the main reason i left fallen earth too. Besides killing mobs, harvesting and crafting there dosent seem to be much to do, FE atleast had enough missions till cap here it seems people only do them for fame. I like having freedom to do things but at the same time i like having alot of content to use the freedom on aswell which alot of sandbox games seem to kinda miss.So is there really nothing much else to do, i heard there were guild wars or faction wars, do those happen often?

The game revolves around raising skills.
How do you raise skills? By shooting magic, swinging a weapon, digging and crafting over and over. This is the main gameplay in Ryzom.
You can do other things like hunt boss mobs, GvG outpost pvp or get a few people together and raid boss lairs but generally your raising skills.
If you dont consider killing shit over and over or working on gathering "content", Ryzom probably isnt for you.
Edit: Just wanted to add that the new devs have put in missions to help players level. You have access to combat missions that will help you level to 150. More to come so it gives you an option to do missions for skill points now. Not just Fame and Dapper.
Advantages - skill system and not class system, can reach max lvl in everything - not need of raids to be the most powerful player in anything - most helpful community and gms/guides you can find ( and you use to find them ) - the best crafting system i have found - you can use melee weapons and guns, even launcher, which is quite fun in big battles
Drawbacks - has lot of grinding as any other mmo, maybe more than usual if you count you have to harvest a lot to get resources to grind crafting - no new content since many years, but that is just important for ppl that have spent some years in game. - main drawback for me is that the 2 factions in game have not very clear differences, most ppl help both sides, is more about group of friends and that makes game not so fun as you never have clear who will help in battles
Blade with whom i have lived, blade with whom I now die. Serve right and justice one last time. Seek one last heart of evil. Still one last life of pain. Cut well old friend. Then farewell!

Aw, this was a game i was finally having some fun with but i know ill most likely ragequit after doing same thing over and over, ill still keep playing until my trial ends incase i like it though.

If your having fun with the game, keep playing.
As far as features go Ryzom has just as much shit in it than other MMOs.
You have Quest, Raids, Arena, FFA pvp over resources, Faction and GvG pvp, Live events that forever change lore, Kitin Lairs (dungeons), Roaming rare boss mobs, Factions to raise reputations with, Encycoldepia (think achievements), A Dynamic Ability customization system (stanzas), Ryzom Ring (create your own quest hubs, raids, Adventures).
I can see that you want the game to mask the skilling up process by feeding you quest after quest the Devs are trying to cater to players like you (you can quest to 150 already). Also if you want to break up the mob grind every area has a hunter Npc that has quests for the shit you would be killing.
The game has content. You have things to work for like getting dapper for Packers, mount and apartment.
The game is deep but I wont totally sugar coat it for you and say you wont have to hunt mobs solo or in a team because hunting is a big mechanic in Ryzom and the playerbase loves it almost as much as digging.

Well, i feel the need to tell something about the grinding.
Of course there is but it only harm you if you go rush for master killing same mobs over and over.
Reality is that, for new players, there is a lot to learn into the world of Atys. The entire ecosystem behave differently, animals have their own weak and strong points, there are a lot of point of interest needed to be mapped to be able to travel in safety, and they change over seasons....
Every MMO is grindy, being it for mobs, raids or quests. An old player could be worried and prolly need new content, but I really don't think a new player could go bored fast with so many things to learn in the basket.
Unless you go playing with spoilers and similar, if you enjoy exploration that's a real challenge in Atys, if you don't try to rush to master something killing plants over and over, you can have fun. The entire world can be considered a big whole quest, where the player knowledge (that can't be trained with skill points) really matters.
You need to change your mind, consider Atys a virtual world more than a game.
I understand this game is not for every tastes, but the problem is not the grind, but the approach of people to the game.
xMetalhead980:
of course it's correct that people need to raise the skills, but really telling the game is centered on that means you didn't understood the real feeling of the game (don't take it personal, just a consideration on how people can have different approaches to a game)
As an example: when i mastered lake foraging i was worried about loosing interest in harvesting, but in reality i love digging more now as a master than before, when i was in need of exp.
The real point is, do you (the player) really play the game? Most people go to spoiler sites to find things.
Few time ago i decided and started mastering ranged combat, that's, prolly the hardest skill to master, as it involves combat, harvest and craft altogheter.
Do you think I went to a site to get mats spots and what's needed to do? Nope. Because actually I want to play the game, I started searching the mats, experimenting to find the good mats to use for max damage ammo, once found them I started crafting ranged, so I will be always higher in craft than in combat so i can deal the best i can without worrying about the material levels, finally i had to organize my packers because without them you can't really do launcher. I didn't asked anyone, and i know many people that mastered ranged so I could. Why? Because actually I want to play the game, not replay what others have done.
Of course if you are not captured by the feeling of a game you will leave, and that's normal.
Edit x Metalhead980: i missed to read your last post, so don't think i skipped it on purpose :P

Good post like always.
Anyway I'm not trying to sway the poor guy.
I've been playing sandbox games forever and its basically the same in every game. The game revolves around character progression through skill system.
In these games we have tons of options but at its core its about the skill system.
Thats why we play. The way we get to mold our character gives us so much freedom that we dont mind deep learning curves or actually having to seek out mechanics in game that would otherwise be right in front of the player in other games.
Some people see Ryzom as this big world with a bunch of mob killing or digging going on and dismiss the whole game. I see a world to live in filled with good people that actually want to team up and help one another.
Yeh i know what you guys are trying to say, you make your own journey. I guess what i was trying to say was that is there enough content for me to do that? for example when you stated how the eco system works, mob weaknesses and how the seasons change everything those are the kind of things that i like. I was mainly worried about having to kill random things just for the sake of doing them and raising skills, i like having choices in what i can kill and the changing environment and mob weaknesses provide that for me. I'm still blown away by the fact that this game isnt popular, seriously dosent make sense to me.
Also , plauged by the worst problem an MMO like this could have- Abysmal population.
A game like this needs LOTs of people to shine- There are only a handful ATM which breaks the economy and kills the potential.
I LOVE Ryzom. Love it- BUT unless people start flooding in soon, you can never get the way a virtual world "should" work. The tools are here, now we need the people.

Most people don't know Ryzom is even still operating.
"The Masses" like it easy and pre-cut and pre-digested.
They don´t want to think while playing a game. Many more than average do consider games a form of entertainment and relaxation from every day busyness.
Games that require you to invest more than just a few hours of playtime a day and actually use your wits and brain to think about them, are sadly most often considered none of the above.
Most players want games that are easy to understand and to "maintain". To have a feeling of reward delivered every few minutes and to have the game "doing the thinking" for them. I.e. leading them by the hand from one reward to the other, without much "cost" to get at the "price".
Raids and PvP are something for a smaller, separate group of competitive players that find they recreation in these activities.
An even smaller group of gamers likes games like Ryzom and finds the mental challenge most relaxing.
But MOST players, just want to sit and click and see bright colors and have an easy, good time.
WoW must have done something right after all, don´t you think?

Ryzom, we dare to be different. Do you dare to adapt?
I'm still on the noob island, but I think the game is good. It has a low population but I enjoy the game.
I started the game a year ago and left because it didn't inspire me. I started playing again a few days ago because I tried other MMO's and didn't like them, so I was more patient this time around.
I'd say that the game does not pull you in in the beginning. I found the race selection to be weird and pointless. I think that's the first place the game should start working on.
* Maybe make it clear that your race/civilization doesn't mean much (if that is the case).
* Put in an auto-move feature
* Make the opening area more flashy. The first MMO I played was Atlantica and I remember that I was pretty impressed by the opening noob area. Add more female characters, make them hot and put them in the opening of the game.
* Give some kind of broad over-arching mission in the opening area. That's one of the reasons I left the game the first time. Nothing to draw me in to the game immediately. Just sort of like, go wander around the village with this weird looking character of yours.

Hm, that depends on what it is you mean by, "doesn´t mean much" . In case of stats it truly doesn´t, for no race has any advantage over another, except for the starting fame values everything is the same.
In case of allegiance to one of the factions, it only matters lore/RP wise, thats true. You can change allegiance whenever you want, with a little effort. So, yes I agree, this could be explained better. * Put in an auto-move feature There is auto-move, just hit the "End" key * Make the opening area more flashy. The first MMO I played was Atlantica and I remember that I was pretty impressed by the opening noob area. Add more female characters, make them hot and put them in the opening of the game. If the opening area is more flashy than the main lands, people will only be frustrated with that. So it´s better to not promise too many things "that are not there" continually in the first place, don´t you think? It´s "bad" enough with many missions still unfinished. (Heres hoping the patch today will redeem that!) * Give some kind of broad over-arching mission in the opening area. That's one of the reasons I left the game the first time. Nope, that's auto-move in a straight line, not auto-move.

That's true. I guess it could just be listed as a weakness of the game then. The graphics are not as good as some other big name MMO's. I highly doubt it will be changed as a game's graphics are the central part of the creative work that goes into the game. Maybe if the characters were made to look a bit more appealing that could be significant enough to make the game more graphically attractive.
Hmhm, the previous patch introduced some of these I think, maybe you just haven´t found them yet?
The point I was making is that the beginning of the game needs more structure. If a person has not found a supposed improvement to the beginning of the game after having played the beginning of the game, then that would indicate that the beginning of the game has not had any structure added to it.
There's no real over-arching mission, at least not until you have played the game for a few dozen hours. The game is a sandbox game, but the lack of structure was a put off to me when I first started playing. It was like, yeah you're here playing as a member of a race you don't understand, in an uninspiring environment, with no clear quests or objectives that you should be working on.
If I recall in Guild Wars, there's an opening scene where it moves around the realm a bit and explains the wars that are being fought between the good guys and the bad guys. Similarly in Atlantica, they give you some very intriguing story upfront about how you have to bring back the Atlanticans (which immediately intrigued me because (1) the Atlanticans were hot, (2) I started to suspect that I was being lied to to work for a race that is actually evil (very interesting!) and (3) at least I had a clear role that I was told that I was to fill).
To sum up, I'd say:
* Display a message in the character creation that race/civilization does not affect attributes or class, and that's it's mostly just appearances. (One sentence like that, no need for additional complications).
* While I do not remember the text you get from the guy you first talk to in the beginning, it should quickly summarize that there are 4 classes and you can develop the skills you get from all 4, but you'll want to emphasize one class over the other 3.
* Perhaps the game should start you out right at the camp adviser, instead of the guy on the hill and thus you can be sent straight away to a job trainer.
There is auto-move, just hit the "End" key Nope, that's auto-move in a straight line, not auto-move. * An auto-move would be nice as well.
I´m sorry, but now I´m completely lost.
What do you mean with "auto move" if not "running"?
Do you want the Toons to run automatically to any NPC or destination in Game, without you steering?
I don´t get what you mean?
The races not having any advantage over any of the others is a tragemark of so called "Sandbox" games.
You distinguish yourself from others of your race, or any other, by your actions, not by your beginning statistics.
If they were to introduce different stats for races and as you state later "classes", then well,... what´d be the difference to WoW or others?
The "classes" thought is a completely wrong approach, in my book anyway. You absolutely don not have to "concentrate on one skill". That´s not the point of the game and of playing it. If you play it like that, then you play it like any other game before.
You´ve got to let go of these ideas. The logic behind this system IS that you´re not bound to any class or "role" in a team.
You´re not forced to be "the Tank", or "the Healer", or "the DPS". You can be anything and everything, if you just do it.
You can train skills whenever and wherever you want, just as long as theres opportunity to do so.
One day you may train Swordfight, the next you may train Pike, the next you may heal in some team, the next over you´ll be digging some needed materials. Just don´t force yourself into a corner by thinking: "I have to learn elemental to 250 before doing anything else." That´s bound to get boring and "grindy" pretty fast.
I myself for example only dig when I need to. I craft when I´ve got enough material to do so and then I do something else for a change. And I don´t mean "leveling", which I do only a few times a month. But thats my play-style, others do it differently of course. And there´s simply NO Game out there that caters to every single play-style out there.
A nice opening scene, yes. That would be pretty cool indeed. As reading the history of the peoples seems to be too much for most players, it should be delivered by way of visuals. I agree.
But the "guy on the Hill" aka. "Chiang the Strong" DOES send you to the trainers right away?
Ok, after explaining a bit about the world and yourself, but he does send you to the trainers. If there was a visual Intro the explaining would not be necessary of course, but he does send you to the trainers.

Hm, that depends on what it is you mean by, "doesn´t mean much" . You just elaborated on how the different races in Ryzom don't mean much. As you said: "it only matters lore/RP wise." If race mattered it would limit us, imagine if starting city, faction and racial spells were set in stone. It would go against the freedom we have to make a choice and change our minds later on if we want to. There is auto-move, just hit the "End" key Nope, that's auto-move in a straight line, not auto-move. What is "Auto move"? Not that bullshit Atlantica has is it? that shit is horrible and designed for people without a brain.

I highly doubt it will be changed as a game's graphics are the central part of the creative work that goes into the game. Maybe if the characters were made to look a bit more appealing that could be significant enough to make the game more graphically attractive. The character graphics are a bit funky due to the artstyle but the world and mob graphics are far from sub-par compared to most AAA mmos.
The point I was making is that the beginning of the game needs more structure. If a person has not found a supposed improvement to the beginning of the game after having played the beginning of the game, then that would indicate that the beginning of the game has not had any structure added to it. It was like, yeah you're here playing as a member of a race you don't understand, in an uninspiring environment, with no clear quests or objectives that you should be working on. The tutorial explains everything you need to know, from skill trees to faction info to game mechanics. Anymore structured and it would be a retarded themepark. You live on Atys thats your role everything else is up to you. if you want clear cut goals play a themepark. To sum up, I'd say: * Display a message in the character creation that race/civilization does not affect attributes or class, and that's it's mostly just appearances. (One sentence like that, no need for additional complications). You already have a choice of starting skill set, this tells you right away the the races are flexible, use your head. * While I do not remember the text you get from the guy you first talk to in the beginning, it should quickly summarize that there are 4 classes and you can develop the skills you get from all 4, but you'll want to emphasize one class over the other 3. The tutorial covers all of that and then sends you to a skill trainer. * Perhaps the game should start you out right at the camp adviser, instead of the guy on the hill and thus you can be sent straight away to a job trainer. Is is that difficult to talk to one extra Npc? honestly I think your just being way too picky for a guy that likes a game with way more flaws like Atlantica. * An auto-move would be nice as well. NO!!! Ryzom missions are supposed to be tough and get you lost. Its the only game where the quests (atleast most of them) are challenging. You seem to want to just coast to a preset goal. Really! No wonder you cant stand this game you must be very bored without a Npc giving you step by step directions.
After rereading your posts you seem to have a dated opinion on Ryzoms starting Island. Maybe you should try it again because most of the things your asking for have been put into the game. Just beware all that babying and handholding in the tutorial stops once you reach the mainland.
Think of it this way Tutorial Island is like a mother babying a child, breast feeding you, cuddling. Once you get to ML its like mommy tossed your ass out the window during a thunderstorm and said good luck.

Ryzom
Advantages
- skill system and not class system, can reach max lvl in everything
- not need of raids to be the most powerful player in anything
- most helpful community and gms/guides you can find ( and you use to find them )
- the best crafting system i have found
- you can use melee weapons and guns, even launcher, which is quite fun in big battles
Drawbacks
- has lot of grinding as any other mmo, maybe more than usual if you count you have to harvest a lot to get resources to grind crafting
- no new content since many years, but that is just important for ppl that have spent some years in game.

Best MMORPG on the market right now IMO-
Also , plauged by the worst problem an MMO like this could have- Abysmal population.
A game like this needs LOTs of people to shine- There are only a handful ATM which breaks the economy and kills the potential.
I LOVE Ryzom. Love it- BUT unless people start flooding in soon, you can never get the way a virtual world "should" work. The tools are here, now we need the people.
yeah i really wish more people played this. It is most def one of the best MMOs i have ever played.
Most people don't know Ryzom is even still operating.

Thing is, Ryzom is just not for everyone.

You must have studied the masses for years? No? Oh. Hm.
Maybe it's because people like you play Ryzom? xD. See what I did there?

This thread has me sold. I'm downloading the client now.
Hm, that depends on what it is you mean by, "doesn´t mean much" .
You just elaborated on how the different races in Ryzom don't mean much. As you said: "it only matters lore/RP wise."
There is auto-move, just hit the "End" key
Nope, that's auto-move in a straight line, not auto-move.
If the opening area is more flashy than the main lands, people will only be frustrated with that. So it´s better to not promise too many things "that are not there" continually in the first place, don´t you think? It´s "bad" enough with many missions still unfinished. (Heres hoping the patch today will redeem that!)
