So a MMO CAN NOT have 1. grinding A GOOD MMO should not have grinding. This is because there should be enough CONTENT to level all the way up. This does not mean that the level treadmill should not be significant. It only means that there should be more than enough quests at every level range. 2. need to farm money There should of course be money sinks in any MMO, but maybe not as many as there are in Aion. I think they are causing a lot of their own problems with kinah spammers because EVERYTHING costs money and some things are ridiculously expensive. There is a lot of demand for it just to cut corners. 3. grind on gears Obviously there should be a grind for gear. But gear grinds should not be significantly more ridiculous than you find in other games. As far as I can tell, there is a lot of grinding for grinding's sake going on in Aion. 4. make people PVP I personally love PVP, but NCSoft will lose a lot of players due to having it forced on them. There is a huge portion of players who don't like it for whatever reason. Gees... if you don't like these features then STOP playing MMO, all mmo has 1 from the list.
Some of the OP's points were valid, as were several of the posts after that. We are all entitled to our criticisms of any game we play. I personally see a lot of potential in Aion, but I also think that NCSoft apparently does not understand the western MMO market. If they did, they would never have released without enough quests to level 1-50 and they would avoid mindless mob grinding like the plague.
QQ much, just don't play it then! Seriously once in a blue moon a AAA MMO from Asia gets a US/EU release and if it not super-easy-mode-can-get-to-the-cap-in-3-days OMG its a grind!
Just quit and go play whatever is not a grind to you...am so looking forward to the end of the free-month so the rest of the QQs will finally quit complaining in-game also!
By super easy , you mean time consuming? Mindless grinding is what kills those games outside of Asia. Good game none the less but I think they could do a little bit more.
level 27 asmodian quest "clearing the way" (given in the desert flight path to the left outpost from Mor).
one of the few level 27 quests.
Kill 31 mobs. reward - 24k XP and.. and a silver coin. Get 6 or 9 silver coins and you get an award.
Each mob nets you 11K XP.
If anyone can explain to me why these PvE quests are worth the grind, i'd love to know get rid of the repeatable quests for REAL quests, then we can just grind. Because that, THAT is a joke.
What makes it worse, is there's a top layer Abyss quest that gives out 58k XP, 1800 Kinah, and a random (teleportaion scroll etc) plus 80 Abyss points for.... getting 5 mysterious stone things. Which drop from almost every mob.

Really? there are quests like that or is a repeatable quest that one? because that was something I hated in runes of magic load of random quests that gave crap exp.
I'm glad so many of you seem so content with mindless mob grinding. I personally can't stand to turn my brain off for extended periods of time, but that's just me. I am happy for you that you will be able to enjoy grindy games. Unfortunately I think you are the reason that many developers don't even try anymore. They know that a lot of people will just grind away and never ask for more. They can even use the same mobs and just switch the skins and the same mob-grinders will keep on playing. Its frickin' 2009. Has this genre really not moved past this by now?? I honestly don't understand how anyone could find huge mob grinding games fun... Its not like there aren't other ways to approach this.
The one thing I think that really seems to be amiss with the newer generation of gamers is that pride from working really hard for a long time to get a toon to where you want it. It used to be that because of the amount of effort involved you felt proud to achieve things. Honestly I hate how easy it is to max level in games these days. I feel no real pride or connection with my characters. I have high hopes for AION to actually make me feel like I accomplished something.
Yet another person twisting what I said into meaning that I want easy mode.
I don't see how having more content would make it any less of an accomplishment to advance a toon through quests than it is to do so through mob grinding. I find completing quests to be much more difficult than grinding the same mobs over and over again. At least quests require you to think and to seek out an objective. Mob grinding is just killing...
I have never said that I thought things should be easy. I only said that there should not be content gaps requiring players to grind mobs for large periods. Mob grinding is just boring. It is only necessary because the developers couldn't be bothered to provide enough interesting quest content to help people along the way. In my opinion, its inexcusable at this point. Especially now that there are other games offering quest content all the way up.
And as I mentioned before, it would be one thing if NCSoft had not trained us to expect quest content throughout the entire game. There are no gaps at all until the late teens or early 20s and by that point everyone has formed an expectation that NCSoft apparently could not deliver throughout the entire game.

It's a repeatable quest.
although there is a normal quest at level 30, at the last area which nets you an incredible 7,000 XP.... yeah thing is, you only get 3 quests opened up at 30 there. And that's one of them, easy 5.8 million XP to get right... lol

Actually in my opinion if you get from lvl 1 to 50 only by grinding you would get rich all the drops that mob drop and gear can net loads of money but yeah it's boring I wouldn't do it that way too at least mobs give good exp compared to some games.
They need to add some more quests yes because it's better having more then enough then having exactly how much it's needed to get to the top since many can't be fussed on searching towns for quests and just want to advance.
yeah people are always surprised when you want to have fun, in a game. rather than a second job. lol

I remember a time at the beginning of WoW when it took months to hit max level. As a regular player, a bit more than casual, it took me no less than two months to hit 60. Nobody complained about the leveling, or the content gaps - yes, WoW had content gaps at launch - and having to grind out certain levels (mainly 57-60 on scarlet lumberjacks), people just enjoyed the game. Even when you hit max level you had to grind rep; don't get me started on the furbolg grind to get recipes, or the argent dawn cauldron grind *shudder*. This game has been out two weeks and people are already nearing the level cap, and yet it's too grindy. Give me a fucking break. I know you're all spoiled by today's 1 week to cap WoW, but really, 2-3 weeks to hit cap isn't that grindy.
Edit: Also, quests are just grinds in disguise. Let's look at what quests and grinding reward you with... Questing Rewards: Items, Experience, Gold. Grinding Rewards: Items, Experience, Gold. Holy shit! They're the exact same rewards! Just because one has colorful text and the other doesn't...failboat.
Best post I've read on this entire thread....
Congratulations for having some sense of perception, I couldn't have said it any better myself.
How about NCsoft just gives everyone to lvl 50 when they create the toon??
IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GRIND IN ANY FORM, DO NOT PLAY MMO. Every MMO gives you some kind of grind, 1. level 2 gears 3 some kind of level i.e. RR in War 4. Grind money
Without grinding, what do you want in a game?? Everyone level to top level in 3 days? Everything is free in game? Every mob drops epic gears?
Stop complaining and whining, JUST DON'T BUY THE GAME AND DON'T PLAY IT.
THAT is the dumbest argument ever. People will bring that up in game and its just one of the dumbest things Ive ever seen. In a GOOD and WELL POLISHED MMO grinding isnt something you HAVE to do, its something you choose to do in order to get a certain drop, money, etc. People dont consider leveling grinding if there are an abundance of quests available.
In Aion, you dont have a choice, your a slave of your own time and money. Theres people that are already level 42 or so. These people are the ones that have no life, probably go to college and spend the rest of their hours in their dorm clicking mindlessly away. These are the people that will tell you Aion is the best MMO ever. A hashly bias opinion since they find ecstasy in clicking their lives into oblivion.
I came from Tabula Rasa, only reason Ive played this game is cos it was free. Tabula Rasa was, without a doubt, a great game. It just lacked content leaking from it's ass and well constructed PvP. However, leveling in that game was a LOT of fun, the community was absolutely awesome, and there was still enough content to keep you going. It was, regardless of what people say (because 90% of those who bash it never even did a trial), a well put together game; simply great. Aion: grind. Thats all I see in this game.
People want good gameplay, something fresh that doesnt feel like a second job. Something they want to do rather than deal with the frustrations of grinding their brains out and investing hours upon hours into a single level. I heard, that when one gets to level 45, there are absolutely no quests and that person will have to grind for 38 hours (I think) just to get to level 46. That my friend is bull shit.
Another thing is that Ive found people dont call it grinding unless they dont enjoy it. Which, Ive yet to find someone who actually enjoys grinding. Not only that but the community of Aion is mostly people with their heads up their ass. Now I said mostly because not nearly everyone is like that, there are few players who are acutally helpful without being a douche about it.
Im a level 23 Asmo Ranger and wish I didnt spend $15 on this game

I enjoy grinding... and there's really no difference from questing and grinding
but Im not going to get into ANY of this with you because its pointless.. you don't like the game, that's fine... but don't make Aion out to be something that it's not. You guys make me laugh... if you can't level cap in a month as a CASUAL player, then its a grind. Please... I remember vanilla WoW took me months to level up and no one said a thing... why? Because people LIKED the game. The same way people LIKE Aion.
In short, you don't really know what your talking about - but your entitled to your opinion. If you don't like Aion, dont' play... its really that simple
I don't know if its just me, but as I find myself getting older with more responsibilities, I just don't have the time to sit at the computer for 10+hours a day like all of those who are reaching cap already. I'm not asking for an easy to reach level cap, but it'd be fun if the game actually had some content to make it fun.
As I said in a previous post, there will always be people that cap out in the first week or so, and if you're going to make the leveling curve a significant one, then don't start off with the first 15-20 levels being all sunshine and happiness to invite you in to a game and 25+ to rip you apart. Its just unfair to those who think they've bought a game that is fun and relaxed and turns out to be something like everything else under the heading of "Eastern MMO".
Sure I can see those people who say "Suck it up and grind it out", or the post about the rep grind in WoW; however, in WoW you weren't forced to do the rep grinds and I rarely did unless there was something I had really wanted, you weren't forced to do it like leveling. Also, grinding out those last levels in WoW from 57-60ish, yeah, it's not so bad when its 3 levels compared to 25 levels and you're at the peak of your game.
Sorry if I want to have fun while leveling and playing a game. Grinding shit out just doesn't cut it.

That all being said, youre right and I respect that.
Im not normally one to play through an MMO just to get the end game. I enjoy leveling up, getting new stuff, new skills, etc. I played WoW before the expansions (never played the expansions) and enjoyed it as well. It didnt feel like a grind, then again I was 14 at the time so it didnt really matter to me.
Im a very casual player, usually only play maybe an hour or two a day when Ive got time. My Xfire game times are misleading because Ill leave it running when Im not even playing which goes for all games on there. It took me two months to reach level 50 in TR which I didnt have a problem with at all, that game was purely fun to me.
Once my two months runs up, I dont plan on playing it. Figured I might as well play it since Ive paid for the month xD

May I ask (and this isn't a troll post) but what's the rush to get to max level exactly?
You can do PLENTY of things 25+ that still have lots of PVP and fun adventures.
I have a life, I don't spend 6+ hours on the PC a day (outside of work anyways), and I don't care if I don't reach cap till Xmas... I don't get what the deal is (legitimate question - again no flaming)

I have no real rush to reach level cap, I've taken 6+ months before to reach it in other games, but in Aion, its just not FUN. There lacks any real fun in doing it. The minimal amount of quest in this game make it boring, and half the time the benefits from completing quest just aren't worth running back and forth. Not to mention the lack of comradery in this game, is close to non-existent, unless you get into a legion, and even then, you better hope you're on par with them or you're left behind.
I'm not trying to reach cap within 2 weeks, but I would enjoy the game if they added in fun things to do and some decent quest with some decent rewards. Hell, even crafting is a grind, however the gathering is probably the best I've seen in any game (aside from when you get gathering quest. Those suck hard-core gonads).

Im in the same situation as Sunrider, and I completely agree with you. Ive only gotten to 21 (probally hit 22 tonight). I have a job, a gf, i maybe play 1-2 hours a night a little more on the weekends when im not going out. I dont expect to get as high as fast as others. I also havent been playing with the tunnel vision i used to play WoW with, where max cap is everything. Ive been fooling around with different crafting skills, raising gathering skills, exploring a bit. If i didnt do any of that I would probally be higher. Aion is the first game in a while where i dont mind the leveling process.
Also i just keep thinking back to Diablo 2, how much of that game was a grind? people would run the same areas (Baal, mefisto, Bloody Hills? (the first area of act 5)) over and over again for hours, just leveling and looking for loot. That just seems like a very similar thing.

Totally agree, it is hard to change ppl's mmo behavior. Everything asian make is grinder, or wow clone lol

We have a different opinion of what is "fun"
I find Aion VERY fun. I don't mind grinding a few mobs to get a level.. in fact, I enjoy it. I see Im only 2 bars away and I instantly run off to kill a bunch of mobs in order to gain that level. I LIKE doing that...
The fact you don't like it or don't think its fun has nothing to do with the game or it being a design flaw... but everything to do with how you feel when you play. I love Aion, I enjoy playing. I don't get bored questing/grinding/whatever you want to call it. I can see how Aion isn't for everyone but personally I think its fantastic.
Across Algard and Mortheim, about 300 give or take a few. Thats also not counting the repeatable coin quests, which Ive done about 10-15 of each
Then you are lying. LOL because Mortheim level ranges are 20-40, so you are only early 20s, there is no way you can find that many quests to do in Mortheim. Most of peopel would go to Brusthonin to do part of lvl 20s quests.
Well Ive also got better things to do than count my quest, I was also just throwing a number out there without actually taking into consideration what numbers youve posted. A more logical estimation would be 200 or so. I just went to Brusthonin because I didnt know what levels were there

But for now, that won't happen for a long time. Hopefully they add a bunch of stuff for us to mess around with once we get to that point.

I do not see a problem with it. It makes me want to get to the top, makes me glad that I spent some time with my character and put in all the effort.
My suggestions is to try a different class, maybe one more exciting. Maybe one that you like killing with.
If none of this works for you, do not petition to change the game. That is kind of ridiculous. No matter how much you want the game to be different there is probably no way it will change to exactly what you want.

As usual, this only my opinion...
If anyone can explain to me why these PvE quests are worth the grind, i'd love to know
get rid of the repeatable quests for REAL quests, then we can just grind.

Really? there are quests like that or is a repeatable quest that one? because that was something I hated in runes of magic load of random quests that gave crap exp.
It's a repeatable quest.
although there is a normal quest at level 30, at the last area which nets you an incredible 7,000 XP.... yeah thing is, you only get 3 quests opened up at 30 there. And that's one of them, easy 5.8 million XP to get right...
lol

Tedious =/= fun
RIP Orc Choppa
Actually in my opinion if you get from lvl 1 to 50 only by grinding you would get rich all the drops that mob drop and gear can net loads of money but yeah it's boring I wouldn't do it that way too at least mobs give good exp compared to some games.
They need to add some more quests yes because it's better having more then enough then having exactly how much it's needed to get to the top since many can't be fussed on searching towns for quests and just want to advance.
yeah people are always surprised when you want to have fun, in a game. rather than a second job.
lol

Best post I've read on this entire thread....
Congratulations for having some sense of perception, I couldn't have said it any better myself.

The West is beyond spoiled. WoW has absoultely destroyed everyone's common sense of "pride" in MMO's. Anything that looks like WoW is stealing Blizzard's idea for the top game. Anything that isn't WoW is an Asian grind fest. No acceptance whatsoever.
At least there are SOME that can enjoy WoW and another game
