Played Aion going back to LOTRO.

Hi guys.

Just finished playing Aion . Found the game and the grind so mind numbing. THe abyss is gank central unless you have a pally with you. And at the moment the abyss is all its got going for it.  I guess i have always being a PVE guy and on that bases i find LOTRO the best there is atm. Just as an added bonus the graphics in LOTRO are so much better than AION. Anyway see you guys in the game.

Wow...you didn't  even make it to theend of the free month.    Sorta a waste of money don't you think?

They have similar grinds imo, having played both. The differences being Aion has more of a grind to cap, and LotRO has more of a grind to obtain things, such as the char customization requiring you to grind specific mobs for perks/achievements/talents/etc, forgot what they are called.

Without a doubt LotRO has some of the best, if not THE best landscape graphics in an MMORPG, not to say Aion's are shabby, those being 2nd best, but if you think LotRO has anything on Aion's animations/models, you're probably kidding yourself.

Yeah, Aion has a definite emphasis on PvP, but that was one of the advertising points of the game. PvP isn't for everyone :) LotRO is definitely the game for those that only want PvP by choice and not in the open world.

.. But in a good way.

The closest thing is called a Chanter, who has auras (not called auras, the name evades me at the moment), offheals, and the best buffs, and primarily wields a staff to beat the hell out of people with. Not a magical staff like the traditional wizard uses, more like a monk's staff. They also wear chain mail and can switch to mace+shield if needs be.

Their role is that of a buffing off-dps/off-healer if needs be.

.. But in a good way.

Yeah, it was pretty well known how exactly the Abyss would work.  If you went in it, you are going to get ganked, a lot.  I think it's silly that you did not know that before now, and wasted that amount of money on something you had known.

oh well. Can I have your stuff?

No offence, but did you do some research before buying Aion? If you were or still are a fun of LOTRO I could have told you that long ago that you won't enjoy Aion. There two totally different types of MMOs.

I love pvp so AIon was exactly what I was looking for. Not only that but your not given a quest journal full of mindless quests to grind for hours at a time...I enjoy that about Aion.

Sorry to see you go but like I said, I could have called it months ago lol

    hmmm interesting.

I've played LOTRO since closed beta and I've moved to Aion as my main game.

Besides, the art design for both games is very different. LOTRO has better detailed areas but Aion blows LOTRO out of the water for avatars. I actually moved one of my avatars around, looking at the moving hair and thought "now why can't the turbine guys do something like this instead of hair that looks like a clay helmet".

What was nice was that I actually had a long talk with Jeffrey Steefel at Pax and was able to tell him why I had, at the time, cancelled LOTRO. Very nice guy and very open to listening to players. In any case he had indicated many upcoming changes so we shall see.

Until then, I will wait for the mirkwood update (what else is there to do? An alt? grind for first age legendary weapons?) to see if they get LOTRO on track.

I don't see much conversion happening between LOTRO and AION. Both the genre and the game type (PvP versus PvE) is so different I just cant see people who are really into LOTRO going to a game like AION.

I do not have a lifetime sub. I HAVE played since closed beta though. I am hoping you just got the two mixed up.

You are completely correct in that they are different games. However I don't really support your statement that a person who is really into one would never go to the other.

It is precisely because they are different games that one might find something different in the other that would tempt them away.

It's like when people call a game a "WoW" clone. Well, if any of these games were truly wow clones there would be no reason for me to play anything other than WoW for the simple reason that WoW is a very polished and feature rich game. There aren't many games that come close to the level of detail that blizzard has put in. Like the game or not.

For me LOTRO had come to a stale halt. I do not like where it ended up. Moria was an excellent expansion that for many didn't wear well over time.

The other problem is that up to this point it is primarily a pve game. Which is NOT a bad thing. However, with pvp material one can play without much new content for a bit of pvp is content enough as the players sort of make their own content. But for some reason I've never had any interest in monster play. I have tried it and it was sort of fun but ultimately it felt like a sort of tournement battle ground that had nothing to do with the world. Though I would like to add that I DO NOT condone changing the storyline and having hobbits slaughtered by player orcs or dwarves marching up to the gates of mordor and laying waste every noob goblin they find.

I don't feel like grinding for bits and bobs so that I can spend them on legendary weapons that may or may not be good so that I can then grind more of them to do the same again. I have all my radiance gear except for the Watcher pieces. However, I must not be much of a raider because though I enjoyed the times we did do it, I really have no desire to continually do it for a coin or whatever they implemented for a first age weapon.

I've never been much of an alt person so that's out. In any case I've come to the end of the road for LOTRO and will wait and see how mirkwood turns out. I don't feel much of "The Lord of the Rings" in the current content. Though I won't lie, I did enjoy most of it while I was playing. but again, I don't get that Lord of the Rings feeling. If anyone has tried the starter hobbit or human instance they might know what I mean. When you first see that particular legendary figure (and i won't spoil it for those who have not tried the game yet) it FEELS like I'm in middle earth and that we are about to start on a perilous journey. But thereafter I don't really feel like I'm truly immersed in middle earth. Maybe because a book focuses in on the important parts and a game has to allow a bit too much freedom which runs the risk of taking the player off track.

Though the world of Aion is not as rich and robust as middle earth it does give me something to work toward and that is the pvp portion of the game. I love sieges and am really liking the rvr nature of the game. If I was just interested in the pve portion then no, Aion would just not cut it. At least for me.

Aion is my main game right now as well. Lotro was very enjoyable until end-game, then it just became a tedious grind with the LIs, radiance, and daily lorien quests. I've finished all the epic books and SM'd my crafts, they can't honestly expect people to grind daily quests (branches, ixp) until Mirkwood comes out.

Some of our kin has come over to AION and more will follow.  I find AION totally enjoyable.  The combat is better and as stated the character animation is way better.  I have never been much of a PvP player but the pvp in AION is so well done that it draws me in.  I have met the lead dev from Korea and talked with him.  He is very sharp and is listening to western feedback.  I think you might be surprised at how good AION will do.

LoTRo ain't a grind, and no you don't get skills from killing X number of mobs you get titles then stat incresses through virtues from killing X number of mobs. Which is totally optional, I have three max lvl characters and I have not spent hardly any time working on virtues at all. When I do work on them I get a group together and everyone kills them own mob in that area, full group can burn through even the end game virtues in a half hour. Vs Aion needing to grind to actually lvl up, which is what people are complaining over.

As to the whole wavey hair thing, my computer can stomach those graphics with ease, but I'm running a high end dual core, sli, 8 gig rig made for gaming. Most people out there don't have a grand or more to throw down for a pc so game manufacturers decide do I want pretty, or do I want pretty and playable. The smart ones opt for pretty and playable if they plan to have a lot of people on screen at one time.

That is what he was refering to, the virtues. And if one could get a group together to "burn through" them then one could just as easily get a group together in Aion and burn through group related content with great xp. There are several areas that are only for grouups and the xp is extremely good.

To that end, "no" you don't have to grind to level up. There are quests out there. It's just that people are not taking the time to find them or are wanting to compeltely be led to them each time they are made available. If an npc doesn't have a quest there is a chance he might have one in a level or two.

My logbook is filled with quests that I never finished.

That is correct, they are working on the best game story around. But I'm not completely impressed with their efforts. If I'm going to play in a world based on middle earth I want to really "feel" like I'm in middle earth. I don't feel like the devs "get it".

Especially with their goofy looking characters. I'm sorry if people like them and I've offended but I want to be inspired by my avatar, not spend an innordinate amount of time trying to make him look less goofy. With his clay hair.

Luckily they are going to be changing the combat speed so hopefully they will also tweak some of the animations.

Another LotRO player who gave Aion a try.  I couldn't make it out of the pre-order betas.  Not that I'm currently in love with LotRO as I haven't played that game in over a month...but it's a hell of a lot more engaging than Aion.

  • NinjaGazNinjaGaz Member UncommonPosts: 53

I played LOTRO for more than 6 months and had fun with it. Aion really does feel like a disguised grind. I think it will have the normal shelf life of these recent big name MMOs - 2-3 months - if that.

Of course, people will continue to play it... but it will never become a "WoW Beater". How can they expect people to get hooked when they simply tell you to kill X mobs over and over.

I think I will try Aion when they come out with a free trial, not a big fan of PvP and from what I have read the game is pretty boring if you choose not to PvP
