So I played the beta for Champions online and it is a MUCH better game than I was anticipating. Granted I have low expectations. But I was expecting an incredibly unbalanced power setup, and got just a few OP powers/ combos (every single game has this). And i was expecting a ton of bugs. There are bugs but the game ran smooth for me and most bugs were some polish things like escort quest NPC problems or I know of one healing power that will resurrect you inappropriately. I found that one particularly funny, death clears all buffs/debuff but since the heal is delayed by 10 seconds, if you die at second 8 you get the heal applied after death and then rez. Pretty funny.
Its good enough that I am going to give it a go, mostly on the strength and uniqueness of the combat system.
I figured the game would be pretty off. Mainly because Cryptic is doing two MMOs at once and seems to be putting them out rather quickly. Also Cryptic did not get all their staff from CoH , some of the guys who stayed were very good devs.
With CO's release and it is looking like they will at least cover their losses and in better shape than cynic like me was expecting does this bode well for STO? I personally won't be playing STO because I have no interest in Star Trek games ,yes I have seen every ST and STNG episode, but ST is more about how funny/campy it is for me. STNG is a good show though. But I am curious.

Putting out a good MMO with a smooth launch isn't an accident or fluke. So yeah, its a good sign.
I have high hopes for STO after seeing CO in its launched form.
Well it's still to early to tell but the head start seems to be going smoothly as I haven't seen the mile long rant threads we usually see when a new MMO launches. If this trend keeps up when they open the main flood gates on September 1st that will mean great things for STO. A smooth MMO launch is almost unheard of in this industry and if Cryptic can pull it off with CO confidence in STO will go up ten fold. Not to mention that so far CO seems to be a highly polished complete game... another achievement that is almost unheard of in this genre. If next week goes as well as the head start seems to be going this will mean the hype for STO will go through the roof. I for one have my fingers crossed and hope for a great launch for CO!

If you saw the press conference wtih Leonard Nimoy's promo, Jack 'whatever his name is' said the system specifications would be very close to Champions Online. Aion and Champions Online both run on my old 3.0 ghz machine, so don't be surprised if STO doesn't do the same.
Jack mentioned Cryptic wanted the game to be like another popular MMO's standards that everyone can play, meaning World Of Warcraft. If you can run World of Warcraft you will most probably be able to play Star Trek Online.
As for the gameplay, STO has the worse negarive feedback of any MMO release I have seen. Will be interesting to see what the final is like. Depending on my funds I will prolly get into it. At least I plan to have it on my pc.
WOW's new accouncement of World Of Warcraft Cataclym will I am guessing be timely with Star Trek Online, which actually is quite soon. Q1 2010 I think.

The only problem with this is all of the negative feedback we are seeing at this point is it's from people who haven't even played the game so it's based on pure speculation. Very few people outside of Cryptic have any actual hands on experience with STO so people are just making assumptions based on what little info we have. We will have to wait and see what people who are planning on attending this years PAX have to say as this will be the first time Cryptic is allowing the general public to play STO. Until then all of the negative things on this forum and others are just what people think STO will be like as they really have no idea what the game play will actually be like having not played the game.
No way STO will be ready in Q1 of 2010(or the new WoW expansion for that matter). They haven't even started to talk about closed beta yet and if STO is typical of Cryptic's other games they will have a closed/open beta cycle of at least 6 months or more. Closed beta may start near the end of the year but I highly doubt we will see an actual release before mid to late summer 2010. I'm actually more leaning toward a Fall 2010 release at this point.

Atari Owns Cryptic now, there is no telling what new directions the company will take. I'd have to wait and see what they do. I can't really judge Cryptic since it is owned by a new company now.
STO has been dumbed down more than any other IP out there. When the game was first announced and as it progressed, it looked sweet. Now it looks like a gimp console game. It will suffer even more from this than CO did, because at least with CO they stopped short of it being a nickel and dime console game.
A successful launch does not mean anything. Many games have had good launches and choked. Many games have had oopsie launches and are still running eight or more years later. It is what the company can deliver on despite of a good or a bad launch.
I play Darkfall, so that doesn't scare me. XD
Awesomeness
"Nerf Rock, Paper is fine. Regards, Scissors."
From the games Cryptic has delivered nothing tells me to be excited for STO, I beta'd Champions and definitly don't like the game in a MMORPG sense, perhaps I need to take the game as just another Online Action Game as for that it might do good for me. I just expect so much more from a game in the MMORPG genre.
But I am glad there are many who do enjoy the game and hope the game continues to improve.

LOL. I also use my own judgement for playing a game, not what the usual cynics say. Hats off to you for making up your own mind and not following the crowd. /thumbs up

When a lot of people agree on the same flaws in something yet you "Make up your own mind" and try it anyway its not being an independent thinker. Its called being Naive.

I think it's daring.
Well...if you jump off a cliff and live people will call you "daring". If you jump off the same cliff and die, people will call you "foolish".
However, most MMO's these days offer some sort of Free Trial or at least an open Beta period..... and heck even the box price or first months sub to a game isn't that bad.... so not that much to loose by trying something out that you think you might be interested in.
The only thing that I would consider naive would be the folks that spend a couple hundred bucks to buy a life-time sub to a game they haven't even seen yet.

And if you try it and end up enjoying it, does that still make you naive or could it be the things that the naysayers were complaining about weren't that big of a deal? For me, a game is no different form of entertainment than a movie. Some of the most well reviewed movies were complete pieces of sh*t in my eyes. I've seen the same thing in games. Birth of the Federation was one of the most panned games when it came out, yet IMO it is the best of all the star trek based games. If I had listened to the critics, I would have never touched BOTF and missed out on many hours of fun entertainment. Same goes for Darkfall. There seems to be a good group of people that enjoy that game. Does it appeal to the masses? No and I don't play it because the style of game isn't my cup of tea. But to those people playing it they could care less.So they're having fun and getting their money's worth while the naysayers seem to continue to go from thread to thread bashing games.
And no offense, but I would never use the naysayers of this website as a barometer to what's good and what's not. Fanboys neither.

Old saying goes that smart people learn from their mistakes, Wise people learn from the mistakes of others. Your sig is a perfect example of the misperception some people have of naysayers. Forums are meant for people to share their opinions and ideas. An educated consumer would want to read why others were satisfied, or not, by a product before they purchase. It is not naive to buy a game you believe you will enjoy. It is a naive gamble to buy something without doing any research on the product.
Not cricisizing you for enjoying the game, if you find it enjoyable that is all that matters to you. My point was simply that if read between the lines and flames and trolls you can often find real honest opinins for good or bad about a game. Unless they have a free trial, this research can mean the difference between wasting money or not.
