(PS - Yes, I know the game is going F2P, but I want to try it out before hand and may want to be a VIP while I still can if I like the game.)

Are product keys for "recruit a friend" type programs available?

The trial is down since  DDO is going Free to play in August 6.

You can still become a VIP if you subscribe so its no different if you do it now or later.

You can probably get a beta key from Fileplent if you really want to try it now.

DDO is no longer going F2P on August 6th.

 

People are currently having issues with subscribing because Turbine had announced they were shutting down upgrades and free trials until DDO:EU went live, which is no longer happening until September 9th. Some people trying to reactivate old subs are having issues as well and so far Turbine has not announced(that I have found) that it will change this because of the delay.

 

I think the beta keys were done, because the go live date was so close. Turbine may make a change to that since beta was just extended a month, but nothing has been announced along those lines yet.

I was able to secure a key from a local shop that still had a copy of the game on shelf.

(BTW: I had no problems downloading patches and updating my subscription this way.)

Remember, you need to download "Turbine Downloader"!

(small file named dndsetup.exe or something like that)

This will download beta server client. Be sure not to download the old client with Module 8. Those are 2 different things.

Also - beta isn't free trial! Free trial is only for the old game, old client. Double check in case of problems:

--> Beta client allows you to play only in beta - there's one server, Lamannia.
