I was on vent once I heard some people talking about a persistent game that, while you could log out, you could be attacked and killed while away. They used a strategy of multiple people in different time zones playing to keep from dying, any idea what this game is?

There's not much point in implementing that feature in an RPG.
I suspect your friend was talking about a multi-player war game, such as King's Age
D&D Home Page - What Class Are You? - Build A Character - D&D Compendium
That's a basic feature of most MMORTS games.
- RPG Quiz - can you get all 25 right?
- FPS Quiz - how well do you know your shooters?
I remember one game called L.O.R.D. (Legend Of The Red Dragon) an old BBS system game . It was text based but I rmember When you logged out the game you could be attacked either while camping or even have your room broken into and you killed.
Most browser based strategy games have this feature.
As far as non-browser based strategy games go the only one I can think of is Artifact from Samu Games.
Pretty old game, not sure if it's still supported. http://www.samugames.com/artifact/
