MMO game for crafters and pets

Hello Folks

First time posting on these forums. I've been hunting through them for some time and following the site news for even longer (google reader). I've been looking for a game that

A: Actually has a good crafting system

B: Actually has a good pet system

For crafting I keep reading SWG was one of the best. I agree, of all the games I have played it was by far the best crafting system I have ever experienced. What it did NOT have was a good resource managing or resource gathering system it was too easy for people to get a monopoly over a certain resource. But the experimentation, item decay, resource rotating was absolutely brilliant for the time.

For pet systems SWG was also good I had few complaints with it. Another game that I have found that is good for pets is a game called Rappelz. However, the latter falls under the 'whoreware' F2P category and is really frustrating to play.

What I would like if anyone could suggest is a game that crafting matters. The best items in the game should be CRAFTED items. I don't care if everything is crafted but raids or the highest lvl quests/areas should be conducted for special components that can be used to craft the items. Again SWG did this well in that the weapon can be made easily but if you want to add a special item that gives it a big bonus you need to get a party and go get it. Also for a pet system I like the rappelz idea that everyone can have a pet regardless of class. However, certain classes can use that pet better and get pet buffs/heals etc that make them more pet orientated than say an archer that focuses on all ranged abilities.

Finally I should also note that I am no longer a fan of the F2P business model, I've played several of them over the years and the same issues keep coming up where the focus of the developers becomes getting more money out of the players NOT making a better game that more people will come play.  All the new content introduced ends up being just another way to make people pay for something. Although I agree they have to pay the bills somehow, it really kills the game for me.

EDIT: Sorry I just realized this is posted in the wrong forum. If any moderators can move this to the LFGame forum please do so

Your ideal game does not exist im afraid.

You can try SWG trial. I did but i've given up on it. It's fun and the crafting is an aspect I like but I hate economies that have auction houses. If you have a global auction house it actually ruins the market in my opinion and just makes it into "right time and right place" economy.

The pet system seems amazing I haven't experienced it, but I mean it is very involved. I wish I played SWG a few years back to be honest. All the haters post-NGE or whatever really dissuaded me from trying.

I may suggest EVE. Here are it's cardinal features that you may find interesting.

    1) Pretty much all items are crafted, like 98% except for best named t1 gear. But those aren't really that important.

    2) they do not have a pet system at all, at best, they have drones that can be easily controlled and are based on skills. But nothing like a pet system in SWG. It's just like a skill. Press a button, set your drones to attack, its' like having another turret slot.

    3) Skills train in real time, so to train your pilot to be an explorer for example will take 1-2 months of real time training and no matter how much you play it won't get affected (implants and learning skills boost your training speed). This is amazing if you are a busy person in real life. If you are not busy and can play 8 hours a day EVE can be very frustrating waiting for the next skill to train.

    4) The economy in that game is the best by far of any game out there. There are regional markets you can do the following things successfully.

    - Gather resources in one area for cheap and move them and sell them to the main market hub for more money (what i did)

    - A corp mate crafted stuff cheap and brought the stuff down to a remote area to sell for more.

It has a regional feel to it to be honest with you. I was basically a trader. I bought low in my 0.0 area, moved it to the main market hub and sold for high. It was perfect. I used to also make money by buying from the main market hub and bringing it down to 0.0. I also made money by producing ships in 0.0 and there were other people who made a ton of money doing player-owned-station management. This expensive *750 million isk* structure mined for the players nad was used to make more complex minerals to sell ot the markets or craft t2 ships. I never did this because i iddn't know how and i was pulling in too much isk trading to bother with something else.

In conclusion. EVE rocks on the crafting system, it doesn't have much of a pet system though ... well nothing at all. It's also p2p so it fits your model. As the previous poster said, your game doesn't exist, but if you value crafting more than pet system give EVE a try especially if you are a busy person.

Darkfall has a pretty unique crafting system compared to most games, im not sure about pets. You will have to do some combat though.

op you should try UO. Much of how SWGs pet systems were based off of UOs and with runic hammers and sewing kits you can make super high end items...

One really cool pet system was the pack bonus for several different pet types (Hellhounds, Imps, frenzied ostards) tho healing with packs is a super pita unless you take the time to makea lot of special macros

No , eve does not meet ''The best items in the game should be CRAFTED items '' criteria ,you forgot faction (CN/DB/TS/DG etc ) and deadspace (pith/gisti/centi etc ) / officer gear .

UO has best pet system i think  and had good crafting but still it doesnot meet ''best items should be crafted ''criteria ,long time passed since i played UO but im sure EA added alot artifacts to UO ,check the UO subforum for more info

Unfortunately most MMO's out right now have adopted the WoW mentality of loot reigning supreme.  You're best option is a game I'm also looking forward to but does not get released until next year:  Earthrise ,, not sure about pets though unless we get some robot pet at some point in game I don't know about.

But crafting rules all in Earthrise from what the dev's are telling us

Isn't it more of a mix with the crafting?  Some of the best items in game are crafted and some are from PvP and the Abyss?

But yea, closest thing so far that's around now for what the OP is looking for anyways.

If you want the best items that can come from crafting, then of recent releases Darkfall fits. However that game is not for everyone and is still raw in many areas (Last patch made it a lot more complete). No pets in Darkfall either.

DAOC fits both your criteria. Best weapons from crafting and solid pet classes. The downside is that it is old and that makes some players hesitant to try it out (still one of the better games out there IMO)

Aion is a very solid game. However, its not slated for release until sept and its still unclear how powerful crafted items will be in the end game.

Thanks for the suggestion folks. I've played UO way back when for quite some time and actually ended up leaving that game for SWG when it came out. I then left SWG when 99% of the people I played with left for WoW. Been bouncing around F2P games since then.

Earthrise looked promising till I read the resource gathering methods they are going to use. Guilds are going to control territory and this territory is where they are going to obtain resources..... that seems to be shooting themselves in the foot to me. It's taking the painful resource gathering methods of SWG and +1 their annoyances. Almost like they are TRYING to get a  monopoly and ruin the economy. Would be a game for me to watch though if they ever remove that resistriction so thank you.

Darkfall sounds like an afk macro'ers dream come true and seems mostly PvP focused that's not a good combination in my books.

Aion I may give a try it doesn't sound very immersive to me though. Each crafted item is the exact same as the last and 'click to make x item' seems rather elementary. But who knows the rest of the game sounds entertaining enough.... maybe I'm just too picky
