Any games where GROUPING is more or less mandatory?

ChlodwigChlodwig Member Posts: 150

And groups are not a thing limited to huge end-game raids?

I know I'm looking for something fairly specific and hard to find, but maybe someone has an idea.

Current games seem to be focusing on questing, mostly solo questing... Well, I'm an old school player. Groups, grinds, all is good. As long as I don't just travel from NPC to NPC, do basically the same shit over and over, never interact with another player. I can deal with long traveling and dead slow leveling.

I played DAoC. Back when it was good.

AO is fairly to the point, (oh, I forgot, if it's not fantasy, consider that a PLUS!) but it's hard to find groups with a rather small player base.

So, are there any group-focused games today? Graphics don't matter, F2P or P2P, either's fine with me, as long as I get my groups easily.

Final Fantasy 11 is pretty much required grouping. It's also pretty damn fun if you have enough time to invest into the game.

yeah i would say final fantasy is your best bet, its old school so casual gamers need not apply.

Thank you for the speedy reply.

The game has been  out for a while, will I still be able to find people to group with at lower levels?

FFXI has Level Sync... which lowers high level players to that of those they are partied with.

It didn't have that back when I played...

you dont have to group at lower levels, you can grind to level 10 before you need to group much, and there is lots of people to group with, because final fantasy lets you play multiple classes with the one character, so people are always leveling a new class.

Every time grouping comes up FFXI is mentioned......I tried its free trial and thought it was as bad of a game as I had ever played.......Ugly, boring, terrible timesinks and this is at level 1.......I tried several fixes for the graphics and they still were never even mediocre.....I'd almost go as far as to say that RUnescape and UO both have better graphics it was so bad.......After 5 years of grouping almost daily in EQ I thought I would really like a game like FFXI but it wasnt even close........If I were to rate all the MMOs I have played FFXi would easily be in the worst 5 played.....As for all these people saying its easy to get groups that wasnt true, at least not on the server I was playing on.....I saw maybe two other people in the time that I played and neither had any interest in grouping at all......Really with all the games available today I dont see why anyone would stick with FFXI.

keep in mind this game does not really start until lvl 10 where you have to go to the Dunes and start grouping so make sure you make it there first. Before you make an opinion on the game. And yes anything in this game takes a long time to do but the sense of accomplishment when you complete something is great. Overall one of the best games i have ever played and I am probably going back to it again because no other game can hold me like this one did.

And yes i left to try out some of the new eye candy games but the game play of those just don't match up with FFXI

Most of that isnt true, I have to ask what level you got to on the free trial... FFXI is not for everyone, but if you have time to spend and enjoy groups there is hardly a better game. Its no lie that it takes a while to level sometimes, but the game really starts at 10-12 at the dunes, then at level 20 when (at least I) went to Jeuno my levels flew by.

Any other suggestions? Maybe some without cutsie-elves?

Don't get me wrong, but  I'd kill for a game like AO. The rather spaced out classes (hey, where else can you play a Bureaucrat?), the mix of sci-fi and 'magic' and the equipment choices of implants, equipment and skills.... loved it!

What I don't love about the current AO is the activity levels. Sure, you still have your groups after 150, but as a doc that can heal and NOTHING else, you're pretty much dead. And love to play extreme characters that can one thing VERY well and have to rely on a group for the rest that's needed (while providing the one thing they can do VERY well).

I love playing support characters, but, as said before, to be viable you'd need a group. And I'd like to have one from the start, not just for the last few hours 'til maxlevel.

I would suggest neocron.  Around level 40 you'll need to party though.  It's a cyberpunk style mmorpg.  Graphics are dated but it plays fast like and fps shooter, but with really cool character and skill progression like rpgs.  It's post apoc world environment, with factions acting like corporations at war with each other.

The only major problem is getting an account as Reakktor only set it up through PayByCash (the website says you can pay pal or click2play but those don't work).

It will cost you something like 32 euros, but it's free to play monthly.  And the mobs after level 40, such as the warbots and the fire-damage mobs at higher levels drop all the rare mods you'll need for your weapons.

The only other problem is that the higher level oldshcool players there are busy pvp'ing instead of grouping and helping out the lower level players.  The server pop is a bit low so it may be hard to find parties but when you do, the game is completely fun.

    Hmm other games...

Well LOTRO... I mean the game is pretty much totally soloable at the start however grouping becomes very very important, particulally with the story quests.

Saga of Ryzom, definatly a grouping game. Scifi Fantasy. It has quite a learning curve, I reccomend finding a guild as soon as you get to the mainland. The community there is fantastic, they will be more than happy to group to level skills.

Planetside... SOEs MMOFPS, I have no idea if thats your thing or not but again grouping is well worth doing in that game, I often found as soon as I logged in i'd find a good group pretty much instantly.

    I'll think of more though.

Also I know FFXI has the Taru Taru (cutesy little elf things as you said) but they generally dont detract too much from what is quite a serious game.

    Edited for spelling... my nemesis.

I agree the graphics are great for game that old, but better then WoW?

I don't think so... I think are on par with each other.

WoW is just more cartoony... which alot people seem to dislike.

Its a personal choice, if someone offered me WoW or FFXI i'd pick FFXI any day. You cant really compare them, WoW is far more accessible than FFXI that much is for sure (im not saying thats a bad thing). The graphics on WoW are amazing (the texture artists are godly), FFXI does show its age and the fact is constrained to the PS2s graphics capabilities but they do have a certain amount of charm. Plus FFXI has a great story once you get into it, and I know you could argue the same with WoW but they're not on quite the same level of storytelling (in my opinion). FFXI is unique, it does not even vaguely try to be the same, it is the most "hardcore" PvE MMO I know of.

I have played ffxi and left, my best buddy plays the game and he has multiple classes to 75 and really does enjoy it. hes mostly in End game now farming and farming and farming and farming.

I will say this if you have played other games such as Daoc/EQ/WOW then realise that for some reason FFXi has some bizare method for determining monster level. You have to investigate every single enemy before you pull it. and in some cases it will say somthing along the lines of "incredibly easy" and you will think great.

Then after you die and release you will then go back out and find a mob "incredibly hard" you accidentally pull it and paste it into the floor.

I will say this for anyone who thinks FFXI graphics are good, i personally think they copped out with basically having the same 5 types of mob from level 1 to 75. it is litterally bunnies, bats, goblins, thne you get to a new zone and its bunnies bats goblins but maybe a different colour.

FFXI i think is one of those games best played with a set group of 6 friends. Form a group make sure you have a red mage and a healer and your fine go off and kill everything. I think its probbly one of the least casual games ive seen because it can take ages to form a group and after the first wipe it may just disband.

its also incredibly longwinded in moving around cities.

Vanguard is a great game for grouping. Lots of dungeons and group quests, fun classes, huge beautiful world. Its not mandatory to group there, since you can solol to 50 on any class, but grouping makes it easier and more fun.

Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO) sounds like what you are looking for. No silly noddy quests, they are all detailed and designed around a group of players working as a team. It has twitch combat and some tombraider type moves (jumping and grabbing ledge edges) and very complex build possibilities that can allow some to solo with a lot of planning and challenge, but easier to group.

    There is a free trial.
