Bah ! what is the point ? u still cant deal with 50 millions SP characters... getting more focused in a tree that will still take 6 month to have a chance to do something in a fight or mining gang, what is the difference between 6 months and 6 months and 2 days?
so, when you play wow, you're instantly lvl 80 with tier 30 gear, super rep with all factions, and keyed to every dungeon that will ever exist?
if not, then um, wtf EXACTLY are you complaining about. try checkers.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
I would also be inclined to go along with purchase of skill sets for real money at CCP that might level the playing field some but long time players would holler long and loud.
so... you also support wow selling lvl 80 characters? wow selling revered/exalted/whatever reputations with factions? wow selling the latest tier of purple (or even legendary) gear? wow selling the ability to key up for any/every normal/heroic/etc dungeon?
because, that's what you're advocating the equivalent of in eve.
does it make sense to do it in other games? sure doesn't sound like it makes any sense.
but hey, logic isn't for everyone.

Let's look at it this way. When I made my miner, I started with a max of 90k SPs, had maybe 1 learning skill at 3, hardly any ISKs, a lot of skills I didn't want/need, and I thought I was doing well. The tutorial of the time was extremely basic: like this is how you mine a roid, this is how you move your ship, this is how you shoot your gun, ok... now have at it. I was actually pretty sore about the character creation before this new new player experience. It took my miner about a month to hit 800k SPs. People could make a month-old character with level 5 skills right out of the box. I admit I used this system to generate a few really good out-of-the-box characters like a trade alt with 5 in some trade skills. But it seemed like a slap to the face after years of new players having to learn how to play the hard way.
I still favour learning how to play the hard way because I think newer generations of players will be too soft and too naive to play EvE properly. It's great for scamming purposes, but not so good for retaining people when they leave safety and realise how challenging the game can be.
So getting back to the skill system, the reason why newer characters CAN compete with older ones is because everything is capped at 5. It takes ages to get to level 5 and the major benefit of doing so is to equip T2 gear. Level 4 is really the best level to stop at until you really really want to specialise. There is a difference yes, I woul say that the benefits of having that skill to 5 + better modules does show in comparison to someone who doesn't have the skill or modules. However, there are ways around this. You can always figure out a niche for exploiting the market, make a lot of ISKs and buy T1 faction modules which are much better than T2 gear and forget about having to worry about level 5 skills. Plus, it's best to have a good hard look at your skills and think what to pinpoint. Say to yourself, I want to be a great HAC pilot, for example, and get all of the needed skills for flying that ship. You'll be able to compete with older characters much more quickly than you expect. Also, it's partly to do with luck and with skill. Like with all PvP, sometimes you might lose, other times you might win.
Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.

At first, I wanted to contribute with something to this thread, then I saw your post.
Oh god, I love people for posting exactly what I think and feel.

two weeks ago i started a new character. the plan is to make my wife an industrial alt and let me test out the new player experience with a starting character. First thing i did was train cybernetics and plug in a set of +3s, which of course is not new playerish at all.
within the first week i had completed 4 of the advanced learnings to +3. In no more than a tier 2 frigate I had also easily finished the tutorials and all but the last 2 or 3 missions in the Epic story arc mission. then i went to low sec to do some mission grinding for standings.
all with under 800k skill points and the majority of that in learning skills.
i turn over drones V and Gal cruiser 3 jump in a vexor and easily finish the Epic story arc.
when characters started with 800k sp, lvl 1 mission were simply a waste of time, there was no threat and no sense of achievement. then they would finally get to lvl 2s (if they hadn't quit from the bordom) and die horribly because they never actually learned anything in the lvl 1s. very discouraging.
Graduating from the lvl 1s now comes with a sence of mastering them and your ship. I like the changes.
THe hype on JGE is very small out of all the people I know maybe one or two actually know JGE is coming and most just plan to get rid of an alt account and use that cash to "Try" Jge. I'll look into my crystal ball right now and say JGE will have next to no effect on the Eve population. Imo JGE shouldnt be looking at the Eve population it should be worried about keeping its old population from JG classic because BP might be taking all of their old players.
Edit: Damn it forgot to quote!!!
I'll might leave for either BP or JGE if they are any kind of good. Problem is chances are high they will be wow-in-space clones. Doesnt appear EVE has a legit successor in the works
