Has PvE in the game improved at all? I remember it being very boring and being a PvE player (though I do enjoy RvR but not all the time or as my primary mode of play) it was in the end made me leave the game.

Not really, no.
It's not bad, by any means, it's just not that good. Hopefully we'll see some improvements to PvE down the line. I wouldn't count on it until RvR is more or less "stable" though.
