Will mmo die when diablo3 comes out

I personally started playing mmos because d2 became hacked too much. Basically i played it to get lvl/items and start pvping or pking nubz. I like death consequence so i played only hardcore mode. Later was looking after mmos with some death penalty. When d3 comes out, i will certainly stop playing mmo. I dont know how blizz does it but diablo is like drug.

I am wondering how many other ppl are there who also started their mmo adventure when they got fed up with d2, but are impatiently waiting for d3.

Playing: Rohan
Played (from best to worst): Shadowbane, Guild Wars, Shayia, Age of Conan, Warhammer, Runes of Magic, Rappelz, Archlord, Knight online, King of Kings, Kal online, Last chaos

DIII will have online gaming as an added feature, not as it's main characteristic so it won't hurt mmo's too badly. Though it probably will dent populations of some games (untill people are fed up with linear hack and slash gameplay again). Those games ARE fun once in a while though!

I played D1 before my first mmo and I didn't stop playing mmos when d2 was released, so why should I do it this time? I'll buy it for sure, but I'll not quit my mmo.

Thats like asking if Starcraft 2 or some incredible new shooter will ruin the mmo genre. Diablo 3 is played either in single player mode or in coop mode on either lan or Battle net. I havent checked player cap per game in d3 but wasnt it 5-8 players in d2?( been almost 10 years, since i played d2, lol). Anyways, Diablo wont have a mmo world with own economy, factions, pvps, and suchs. Its not really a game where you can have a career - its rather some fast paced hack´n slash and alot of rolling the loot dice; like a glorified casino.

    What a dumb question..

Yes all mmorpg as we know it will die and players will never again play mmorpg because every single person who play mmorpg is playing WOW(not) and they will leave to play a single player lan game.

I sound dumb just like your dumb question.

I played Diablo 2 once and thought is was deadly boring and it hurt my wrist, nice music though.

WoW is pretty much D2 in 3D, more to see so less chance of getting bored.

Had to remove signature because of lame code of conduct...

Well not subscribed to any MMO at the moment...and no plans to be till something catches my fancy. So I voted 'no'.  Not quitting any MMO for diable, but am pretty sure I will be playin it when it comes out.

I'd rather play Dungeon Runners than Diablo.  So, I'm a no.

  • Well, I'm cut from the same cloth as the OP, at least as far as gaming goes.  Until D3 gets hacked, duped, and botted to high hell, I won't even be bothering with more than a cursory glance at upcoming mmos.  That being said, Diablo and mmos are entirely different beasts.  D3 will have an effect on mmos, but they most certainly won't die.  It's ridiculous to think that they would.  Diablo could never come up with the kind of ongoing content that mmos have for one simple reason.  No monthly fee.  On top of that, no monthly fee means that you can never trust the dev.  They can change the game in whichever way they want at whenever time and there's no paying customers to vote with their wallet.  That's a pretty big deal when you really think about it.  For example, I've been playing D2 recently, and I've been getting temp ip banned for doing meph runs.  I use no hacks, no cheats, no maphack, no bot, no nothing.  Yet, the real bots will run you through diablo and baal in five minutes flat.  Yet I'm the one who gets temp banned.  This is the kind of issue that a dev can pull on you and you have no say or impact in the matter.  They start doing that in a mmo and watch the customers leave in droves.

Well yeah, if you think D3 is a single player lan game than you actually are pretty dumb.

I'l play D3 aswell as whatever MMO I might be subscribed to when the game comes out, it's how I've always done it when any other good single player games I've liked came out.

    DIABLO 3 is a phenom.

When it releases everyone will buy the box.

People will play untill they get max level and get satisfied with their gear, about that time, they will have seen it all and many people will give a break untill the next big thing, expansion and or patch.

Diablo 3 will pull a lot of strings in the mmorpgs population.

I dont think it will keep our attention as Diablo 2 classic did, due to the change on game mechanics towards casual gamers mainly. So dont expect insane longevity like 500-2000 hours needed to get satisfied achievement-wise. Expect something like 150 hours top.

The thing is the influx of new players in Diablo 3 will be constant, so its design flaws and limitted longevity-reach wont be easily spotted due to its cheer ammount of popularity at all times.

I cant wait. I only hope they dont sacrifice longevity (the massive scale of time and effort needed to get satisfied achievement-wise) in order to appeal to a broader range of new gen, casual gamers, who barelly knows what made Diablo series so great when it was released and why hundreds of devs cloned main characteristics of it.

I agree but that pull is only temporary and will not likely cause an actual lapse in subs for most games. To me these are different genre's of games, one being CAPRG (D3) and MMORPGs. While some of the goals are the same they are also very different in general terms.

Most players will most likely just play both.  Heck, I stopped MMOing for almost a week when L4D came out because it was a great game but it did not make me drop my subs or stopp playing MMOs. A break is always good.

I loled @ this question. What is next, WOW killing EVE or Second Life killing WOW?

I will play D3 but only during EVE downtimes.

No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.

i voted no to this question. i have never played diablo 1 or 2 and i have absolutely no clue what either looks like or is about. going on that knowledge and the responses by everyone else in this thread im going to go ahead and say this game wont do anything worthy of mentioning as far as subscriber numbers are concerned.

Well, to be honest, it does sound like a bizarre question. However, He's not the only person to pose it. I've seen others say or ask the same thing, that When Diablo III comes out, all bets are off.

There was even a player who indicated that pushing back Aion's release so that it was close to the holidays was stupid because of the Diablo III release.

So I think there are players out there who really like Diablo!

The diablo games are blockbusters as far as computer gaming goes and are made by Blizzard.  D3 will be another blockbuster, guaranteed.  When EQ was the king of mmos with 400k subscribers, D2 had sold millions of copies and had far more players than the vast majority of mmos have ever had.  Maybe you should check it out so you actually have some knowledge about what you're speaking of next time.

Who knows, you might find it intriguing.  If you do, I assure you you'll be far from alone.

That's like asking if MMOs will die because an FPS comes out...

As in you don't believe it and find the thought absurd?  Or as in you completely understand?
