Exp without moving

Someone in Frontier Wars has been sitting in a spaceport making several hundred exp without ever leaving it (not counting the hourly ticks). Anybody know how this is done?

He's got colonies.

Colonies tick every hour, not every minute. You don't see those as a constant rise of 10-20 exp a minute, you see them as a large jump every hour. And at the same time, I have over 40 colonies of my own and it's quite impossible for me to miss the spam when it ticks. This isn't colony exp.

Colony exp is quite often out of sync with each other and doesn't give a big jump in exp every hour, but instead trickles through every couple of minutes over the hour period instead. This is what you are witnessing.

Weird. My own personal exp always seems to make solid jumps once an hour, I've never had the trickle effect with my colonies and I had 86 at last count. Wonder what the difference is?
