New Player to LoTRO from WoW

ZorlokZorlok Member UncommonPosts: 132

Hi guys,

I know everyone has heard this many times.  I am a previous wow player and have been playing that game since launch.  I have also played basically, all the other MMO's and always return to WoW.  I have taken breaks over and over again, but about three months into WoW I tend to stop playing.

Now, I realized PVE is my game of choice.  So, now that I bought MOM and am installing it as I speak, is there any advice anyone can give me?  Anything I should be looking forward to coming from WoW?  ANything anyone can tell me would be great.

I am 30 year old Professor who has played mmo's from day one.  I know my gaming and am not looking to get flamed just looking for a little adivce and hopefully some info on the game.

If you have any positive reiforcement as to how this game goes please let me know.  I play about 20 hours a week.

Within the last month I started playing LoTRo also. I played WoW for 3+ years, left about 6 months ago, just bored...been there, done that. I played WAR for awhile ( am still subscribed), but was looking for a game with better PvE. I had a week's vacation, so tried thr LoTRo free trial, and they sucked me right in. I was already geeked about the legendary item system( althouigh you don't get them til level 50), so was ripe to try it again. I don't remember what I didn't like the first time I played LoTRo. But this time I love it. Been playing a warden, which fits my playstyle to a T. I usually play Pally's cause I like defense and self-healing, which is what the warden has.

The game looks great in DX10, very little lag, lotta solo quests and some group quests that are easy to find a group to do. There is an overall story arc, presented in book chapters, and many of those quests require groups, and you really want to do them. Maybe thats what I didn't like the first time. But since then I've come out of my shell, and gotten over fear of grouping. I still prefer to solo tho.  Take the time to read the quests and you will really feel like your adventuring behind the scenes of the Fellowship of the Ring, helping the people of Middle Earth. The story really is exceptional, and adds so much to my enjoyment.

I hope you have a lot of fun in LoTRo, welcome!

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotro

Helped me a lot when deciding a class.

The one thing that kind of bothered me coming from WoW and going to Lotro is the lack of community envolvement.  That's not to say that the community for lotro is not active, its just coming from the juggernaunt WoW where you have amazing sites like thottbot and amazing addons like questhelper, I found that lotro was just not as progressed community wise.

are all the starting areas the same?

You lose so much of the game if you are not exploring and looking for the quest objectives.

No, there are initially two starting zones for either the Elves/Dwarves or the Men/Hobbits. You are pretty soon urged to Bree though so if you play with friends from across the above pairing you will meet up soon in Bree. From there on the Epic Quest progresses the same for all Classes and Races so you can do the content together.

Sorry, just had to pop in to correct this mistake that appears twice in this thread.

There are 3 (not 2!) starting zones.

Initially, there are small instances for all races (different for dwarves, elves and humans/hobbits), but they lead one to level 5/6 only.

After that players are entering the common world, with 3 (not 2!!) starting zones: Ered Luin for dwarves and elves (north part for dwarves, south part for elves, joining around lvl 8 or so), but humans and hobbits do NOT have common starting zones - the shire is for Hobbits, and parts of Breeland (Archet and closeby) is for humans.

    This might help:

    http://lotro-guides.com/lotro-classes/

If you are a melee-dps fan, I would go for the Champion. Also a fairly forgiving character to play for a newb.

All the classes are good, though. You might find yourself surprised at how much you enjoy a class that is not what you might normally choose. I have been having a lot of fun with the Lore Master recently, even though I wouldn't normally play a class like that.

  • YeeboYeebo Member UncommonPosts: 1,361

I would highly recommend trying out a hunter.  They are the most fun ranged DPS class I've ever played in an MMO.  They hit like a truck at range, but they are also not totally defensless in melee range. Thing Mage DPS at range, and WoW hunter DPS in melee range.  They get tons of travel abilities.  Hunters can learn to teleport to almost any zone in the game (think Mage portals), have an extra selectable campfire in addition to their map,  and get a group runspeed buff.  They also get traps and tracking.

Fun solo class, and the premiere single target DPS class in groups by a decent margin.

Other heavy DPS options include Champion (offtank and AoE specialist), Gaurdian (incredible solo class, decent tank, high single target DPS), and Runemaster (like a preist that can switch between holy and shadow at will).

    Welcome to Middle Earth.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

  • ZorlokZorlok Member UncommonPosts: 132

Thanks for posting this.  I belive I will give the hunter a try.  I really like traveling ablities.  Also, I think I will rtry to be a hunter.

Do people group up a lot in this game or is it mainly a soloing game?

Plus, how is the crafting?  is it something that I should spend time doing?

Is there a town where most people "hang" out at?

What do people do once they reach level 60?

Once I mae my hunter should I concentrate just on enjoying the atmosphere and learning the character or are there things that I should get dont right away, such as getting skills and so forth?

THanks everyone.  I reallly appreciate all the responses.  I'm hoping for a good community to join.

Is there a certain server I should join?  I would like a server with mature respectful people.  Perhaps join a group of people to play with on a reular basis.  I would also like a populated server too.  I like seeing people around me when i game.  What do you guys think?

    Thanks again!!

Also, does anyone have a problem with their directx 10? I have a GeForecr 9800M GTS on my laptop, but when I activate directx 10 everything is all messed up.  Has anyone had anything similar to taht happening?

  • Enforcer71Enforcer71 Member UncommonPosts: 780

I havent had any problems with dx10, are you sure your video card is dx10 capable? Or if your on the free trial you may not have the complete game yet so dx10 is not activated.

I think you will enjoy the game as I am also a player that has come from wow recently and just bought the game a couple of days ago and I am loving it. I have played other mmo's but always seemed to end up back in WoW, however this time I dont think I will be going back.

With all the traits and other things you have a huge way of making your character so different from someone else even if you are the same class. The graphics are simply beautiful. Combat seems slow at first but you must remember it has a more realistic feel to it. The combat does speed up the stronger you get. With the lore and beauty of this game I find it to be much more relaxing and fun to play. I do not feel a need to rush to max level and a lot of times I level and dont even realise it.

As far as classes, I can give you a few ideas as to what I have seen from my experiances of messing with all of them and compare them to something in WoW for you since that is where you are coming from.

Champion - This is like a dual weiding dps warrior in WoW.

Captain - Is pretty fun and from what I experianced it seems almost like a paladin as far as strong like a warrior and has buffs for the group and heals; on top of that in the higher levels you will also be able to have a pet. The pet of course doesnt fit the paladin but the main characteristics do.

Rune-Keeper - I would say this fits closer to shaman. You have your dps mostly in the form of lightning and you also have healing and a healing totem.

Guardian - This is your Tanking Warrior

Mistrel - Your priest but has the capabilities of doing some decent damage as well. Fun and musical..lol

Keep in mind these are just personal opinions and I am in the early stages of the game myself so some other veterans may have a different opinion.

    By the way, Welcome!

Awesome response.  Thank you again.  I do have a video card that is compatible with direct x10.  I hope that once i update my drivers everything will work okay.  If anyone else has info about the directx, please let me know.

And one last quesiton.  What about the servers?  Is there one that is highly populated?  I would like to play one that has a high population for social reasons.

  • Enforcer71Enforcer71 Member UncommonPosts: 780

Not sure about server pops but I play on Silverlode and I see people in every zone I have been in. Sorry I cant give you a better answer...lol.

Good luck with the dx10 and hope you enjoy the game.

I dont have a Nvidia card but I heard there was some issue with one of their drivers and LoTRO. But I heard the latest driver fixed that issue.. so I would reccomd going to Nvidias site and downloading the latest driver for your card.  :)

    Brandywine is the highest populated.

Zorlok, welcome to LotRO, I hope you have a lot of fun. The community is a clear step above that of WoW and I think you'll see that very quickly. People seem to have set you on a good direction so I'll just mention Nvidia driver issues.

LotRO and Nvidia drivers have a love-hate relationship. If you are, like me, one of those unlucky few who have a system that just hates to mix the two, there is still hope. If the latest nforce driver gives you problems try 178.24, it is 2 or 3 releases back but seems for many people (myself included) to be the most stable in the last 6-9 months.

Hopefully you won't need to try it, but if you do... 178.24 might be your friend.

    Best of luck.

    Hi guys,

I updated my drivers and everything is working really well.  I'm playing the game and really enjoying the atmosphere.  I am a level 10 hunter and I hope the excitement keeps up.  How are the server's populations keeping up?  What has everyone seen since the expnasion came out?  I'm worried about findign people to group with.  Is this a foolish idea?

Well I almost only heard possitive things about the expansion :)

And don't worry, LOTRO has a very healthy population so normally you don't have problems to find groups

    enjoy your stay there!

I can speak a little to server populations and grouping.  I took a LotrO leave of absense last summer to start testing and playing Warhammer.  I got to the end game in no time, and then I got bored doing the same scenarios over and over.  Anyway...point being, I came back to LotrO in January.  I convinced a coworker to join me, so I started a new toon.  Grouping wasn't too hard.  Sometimes I might have to wait a night or two to find a group for certain quests.

So what does all that mean?  I decided to check out server populations myself over a couple nights during the week.  I did a /who for 1-10, 10-20, and 20-30 to get an idea of how many people were in each level range on different servers.  Some people will try to tell you that the /who caps at 100, but they must not be smart enough to scale down their search range until their results produce less than 100 people; then refine and keep searching.  Example, /who 10-14, /who 15-17, /who 18-20 and add up the results for those who are challenged.

Results (keep in mind I did these a little over a month ago, it was around 6-6:30pm EST midweek)

#1 population - Brandywine ~250 for lvl 10-20 for the nights I searched.  The numbers dropped a little for 1-10 and 20-30, but not much.  My friend and I decided to join this server.  The good, never a lack of groups.  The bad, sometimes there is a queue to login at nights and there is some minimal lag.

#2 population - Landroval ~175 for lvl 10-20  for the nights I searched.

    #3 population - Silverlode ~150 for lvl 10-20.

Then all other servers were about the same.  110-130 people at most on the other servers for the 10-20 range.

Given with what others post on here, I think that helps to point that Brandywine is the most populated.  Could be good or bad depending on your preferences.

I beta tested LOTRO but didn't buy it on release. Later on after giving WoW a break, I gave it a try. I loved the graphics and the game play wasn't bad at all. Did I mention . I loved the graphics. :p The story lines are nice as well. In the end however it was too similar to WoW and not the change i was looking for so I left. Had I played LOTRO first ...i'd probably still be playing it though ...really nice game.

While I agree that you lose a little, some of the quest decriptions I've been reading in the Shire have driven my nuts trying to find the person I'm looking for.  I would quit the game if I had to do those quests because I simply could not find the person.  I went on the net and found them and turned in the quest without feeling like I cheated because of the lack of direction they provided.
