My new build: Revised

numaticnumatic Member UncommonPosts: 670

Here is my new build. I'm fairly certain this is what im going with and will be buying it shortly unless someone can give a large legitimate reason why it would be bad.

Hard Drive $75: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218 Just a basic 500GB HD

DVD/CD Drive $25: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136152 Nothing extravagant. Just need the basic here.

Computer Case $90: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811103010 I wanted a full tower for the extra room especially for the vid card. I know both fans are intakes however i can simply invert the side fan to an exhaust, and doing so according to reviewers, can decrease the temp 8-10 C.

Monitor $170: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009145 I know it's not top line but i'm not too concerned with an absurd contrast ratio. Coming from a 17" regular monitor this is a huge upgrade.

Motherboard $114: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128381 This one was iffy as there isnt many reviews on it however it looks pretty nice. However if you do have a better cheaper option I will consider revising this one the most.

Video Card $225http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102801 Cant skimp here :)

PSU $65: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182030 Good reviews, I figure 550W is plenty. Seems like a good match.

Speakers $23: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121014 Just basic here.

2x2GB RAM $70: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220314

CPU $190: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103472

total: $1114
rebates: $30

The processor you have selected requires an AM3 socket, so as a result you will need to select a motherboard that has an AM3 socket, such as the ASUS M4A78T-E . Also, you will need to change your memory selection to DDR3.

Otherwise, you can stick with the motherboard you have selected and go with a different processor, like the AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz , and the DDR2 memory that you have selected will work.

The cpu you linked is down to $145.. if you were planning on spending $190 you could step up to the Phenom II 920, or you could save the 45 bucks.

The AM3 socket processors are backward compatible/will work in a socket AM2+ mobo, the difference is the AM3 socket mobos will allow you to use DDR3 memory but still work with DDR2 memory.  So technically he can stick with that cheaper mobo and cheaper DDR2 ram, while using an AM3 CPU - there's also very little real performance benefit from the DDR3 solution (anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx) atm so it's just a cash consideration.

However you might be able to find some combo deal on newegg (hit that view all combos link) that lets you get there without much more investment.. I never have any luck with that though they always want to sell me like a $400 case.  I wish I wasn't too cheap to replace my crap 10 year old case lol.

My apologies, I didn't realize the AM3 was backwards capatible - good point. I do have to agree as well, that DDR3 hasn't yet shown significant performance increases over DDR2 for the money.

Personally, I'd be tempted to spend the extra with an AM3 motherboard, since AMD is moving in that direction, but that shouldn't significantly affect the choice of the original poster if he intends to upgrade or purchase a new machine every couple of years.

It's cool for some reason I thought we were looking at an AM2+ cpu to begin with it was a good catch.

  • numaticnumatic Member UncommonPosts: 670

My bad guys, I posted the wrong CPU lol.

This is the one im getting http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103472

It's the AMD Phenom II X4 920 2.8ghz which is AM2+ :) Sorry bout that. And of course the video card goes up $25 in price since going to work lol.

It looks pretty good, that would be a solid and reasonably priced gaming rig. The only two suggestions I would add:

    1) Consider a good well ventilated aluminum case instead of that massive plastic monster, which can be found at your price point. There are usually sales on the simpler Lian Li cases for about $99 or so and often they are just missing extra factory fans at those lower prices, which can simply be added later.

    2) Consider a slight bump up in your PSU. 550w would be ok with what you have, but I fear it doesn't give you much "wiggle room" for future upgrades, and keep in mind that a good SLI setup (if you ever decide to do that in the future) may take your 550w to the limit. I mention the SLI limitation because you have selected an SLI capable motherboard.

Other than those things, looks great. That AM3 mobo gives you the ability to upgrade for the next couple years.

Don't get Rosewill.  All the Rosewill products I have bought have died.  Universally people know Rosewill products are cheap.

Oh, yea I thought you still had that Corsair lined up.  Check this one out though www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx OCZ 700W.. though it's $110, BUT it has a $35 mail in rebate and newegg throws in a free 22x DVD burner which you were going to spend $25 on anyway =)

Or if you get that XClio case you can combo deal it with a wide range of XClio power supplies for $20-$40 off like this one www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx, the 'greatpower' line is suppose to be quality.

good idea noquarter...i think i will switch the PSU and get the free dvd burner. Thanks.

I would suggest a solid steel case and the case dimension you choose seem to look good.  I dont care for the plastic window so here are two alternate choices:

Athena Power CA-SWH02B65 Black Steel Pedestal Server Case With EPS-12V 658W power supply 9 External 5.25" Drive Bays - Retail

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811192053

Athena Power CA-SWH01BR6 Black Steel Pedestal Server Case With EPS-12V 658W mini redundant power supply 8 External 5.25" Drive Bays - Retail

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811192059

I am sure that there are other choices.  It seems that vid cards get longer and longer and you will need that extra depth to take the card.

Also, when inverting the fans, I prefer to use natural convection so if you can locate the fans toward the top of the case and exhast, you will be better off.
