So, I just got into beta last night and have been playing until the servers went down for maintenance today.

The first thing I did today, was log on, make a Human and read all the tips that come up when you first enter the world, and changed my graphics up to 1680x1050, full detail, shadows, AA, etc.

So, I'm standing there, and I equip my Leafblade, and all of a sudden I hear grunting and clashing and a few "HELP ME!!!!"s, so I run in the direction of the sound (using headphones, so it was a little difficult to distinguish). I see 4 guys fighting, it was hard to tell if they were dueling or actually killing eachother, but I was like what the heck, I really have nothing to lose, so I go after the guy with the least amount of health, and kill him, I figured out at that point that they were dueling, so as a result the other three killed me.

I respawned back in town almost instantly, with another Leafblade, awesome, nothing gained and nothing lost.

I go out of the trail, two minutes later, I hear a smaller scale battle, find them, only to discover 2 heavily armored fellows with 1/4 health each. Awesome. I watch from a distance, as one run and jumps in to the water and starts to swim away, I jump off the rock I was watching them from and start smacking at the guys back as he chases the swimming one. I manage to kill him before he even gets in the water, and commence to loot. The other guy turns around, and starts to loot the guy I just killed, and he took the chestpiece I wanted, so I killed him too, and was pleasently surprised to find 2-3 of every slot of armor, many bows, shields, weapons in this guys backpack, so basically, in my first 20 minutes, I had gotten fully geared.

I then see that the servers are going down for maintenance, and decide that I probably should head back to town, as I was "evil" or something like that, so I start to head out to find a wilderness bank.

As I you may have noticed, I never saw one NPC mob, at all, this is the only thing I can find wrong with this game, there is virtually no mobs anywhere to kill, note that I haven't ran very far out, but still, I don't think you should have to run 20-30 minutes out to find some Goblins to kill.

World Graphics are quite nice, Character Graphics are a notch better than World of Warcraft.

Combat, I really don't mind the hack-and-slash click to swing deal, I think it's actually quite fun. I haven't tried out any of the bows I picked up, I will do that when the game comes back up, and I haven't tried Magic either.

Crafting, I saw quite a few nodes (really any chunk of rock on the group)  to mine from, and almost every tree that looks like you would want to cut it down, can be harvested, so it looks like finding nodes shouldn't be a problem.

Apart from the mob issue, I really think this game is ready for release from what I've seen, it kind of just a Hello, Welcome to Darkfall, and then they kick you through the door, I suppose you could read the whole Help menu, but I'm not one for reading how to play every aspect.

Hope you enjoyed my little PvP experience.

For any other beta testers out there, how does one remedy the being considered evil thing, and can I not go back to any Human town now? Worst comes to worst, I just transfer this stuff to a friend, and then back to a new character : )

EDIT: Also, don't call me a fanboi without reading my post history, you will see that I was a "vapourtroll".

Honestly, that sounds like a great experience. Reading your post sounds like this game will be something I will like to play. I have always hated rules in games and I know that is a catch 22, but I am looking forward to playing this game and hope that I am not disappointed. Of, course I don't speak for everyone else, just myself.

    Sounds like u had fun.

Go to the enemy factions and kill them to improve ur standing with ur own faction.

It should make u blue again eventually.

Thanks : ), I'll try to post some more when the servers come up, and I'll toss some screenshots in this thread as well.

The only way you'll be disapointed with this game is if you expect a billion quests, think you can get away with mob hunting for the whole game,  think there is NPCs who will tell you where to go, and if you can't read signs.

Darkstar, thank you for the tip, however, I have no idea where to find those areas, as I just started, think you can give me the general map area I could find the opposing faction?

    Thanks again.

Each area has an enemy faction area on each side of it. So just follow the coastline to and pick a direction lol.

There is a map floating around though where you can see where each is.

Haha, you log your newbie char  and killed 3 players?

I guess that beats killing rats at LV 1 in other mmo`s. It sounds like you had fun, and you adapt fast. I bet the looting part was fun too. If your char is just a noob char you might delete it and make a new.

This isn't the final release build yet, so there likely are a few mobs that aren't activated. Even so, it's obvious the world was not, and never will be, intended to have wild life every ten feet, like most MMORPGs. It's not realistic, nor is it fun in the long run. It's just too easy, and Darkfall isn't about stuff being easy.

Yup, first time in game, killed 3 people, and got lots loot. I actually stood above the last guy I killed, because I didn't know I needed to "gank him" (finish him off when hes on the ground lying there). I guess he was hoping I wouldn't figure it out, and just leave him there, but that wasn't the case : ).

Yeah, this post pretty much sums up what I think is wrong with DF, being able to interfere on a fight like that and beat people who were engaged in combat.

But hey, obviously this appeals to many so they've found their game.

I might just sit this one out.

So wearing headphones which totally give you binaural sound you can't tell in game which direction sound is coming from?

Interesting, I guess that what I had read about amateur sound programming is correct.

BTW I thought that the game only stretched to fill 1600 x 1050 since it has no real peripheral widevision effects (didnt' need them back in 2001) so does the world appear like a normal TV signal stretched out on a modern HD TV? You know distorted and oval shaped vs true circles?

Yeah, concerning the mob issue. There are plenty of mobs, not as much as in any other mmo, but enough to not interfere with the PvP. There are goblins only like 2 minutes walk from every starting city. (take the quest from the nearest npc when you log in to see the spawns on the map.)

Darkfall is not for you. Do not even try it, you wont survive.

But hey, atleast you saved 50 bucks.

An Eve online player complaining of mechanics which can also and have been used in his game of choice? This is the best argument you can come up with?  I haven't been a fan of this game and have had some critical remarks myself, but seriously were you even trying here?

  • javacjavac Posts: 1,175Member

personally, the overall way DF plays and feels reminds me a lot of EVE -- confusing, difficult to learn UI, deeply immersive and unforgiving world.

DF has much better graphics, PVE, and AI though... hard to see DF failing when it so closely resembles the potential EVE had when it was first released.

Well, I was able to tell from left and right, and obviously they weren't fighting behind me, because I just left town : P.

I was also able to tell I was going the right way because the sounds weren't getting any quieter., haven't tried with my 5.1 yet, but I'll try that now.

The game stretched out seems to look normal, I will double check the resolution right now, it is indeed 1680x1050, and it does not look distorted at all, and looks great.

I'm not sure man. I don't want you to take all my phat lootz, plus Humans hate me right now, so I need to find some people to kill. It seems the servers are still down however.
