So after 3 years of a break, I've decided to give this game another shot.
Pre-NGE, I played a Wookie Jedi and enjoyed it a lot. I played for around 2 years, until NGE hit, and I left just like most of you.
After reading a few novels which occured after the original series, I became reinspired to give it another shot, so that is exactly what I did.
I booted up Station Launcher (which looks completely different, and kind of works like Steam now), downloaded SWG, and launched it.
After creating my Mon Cal Jedi, I messed around for a bit, got to CL 16, and did a few space missions for the Imperials, and I must say, that this game still retains it's original beauty and most of it's gameplay.
I understand that most of our freedom was lost after NGE, particularly those retaining to our "class" choice, however, it's honestly not that big of a deal. While they did cut a bunch of those classes, we now have 9 that work very well, and are all unique in role and apealing in their own way.
I have settled myself on Bloodfin, and am expecting to see more faces in 2 days when they open up free server transfers, but already, the server population is healthy, and the Cantina is still full of friendly people. I am looking for an Imperial Guild, so if anyone has a decent one, contact me in game. My IGN name is Jellyfishy.
I know that the flamming will begin, however, the perception of this game constructed by these forums is completely wrong, yes, I hate Smedly as much as you do, but this game is honestly pretty decent compared to what you other vets make it out to be. So to all those interested in playing, I say give it a try, dont let people tell you it's shit, because most likely they are still nerd-raged. You may also want to start with a friend, as it makes it that much more fun to know someone, and be able to do quests together.
This is my opinion, and in all honesty, you cannot judge this game until you try it once more. I will respond in this thread. If you want to contact me, you have my IGN name.
Thanks.

Yes SWG is soo much FUN !!! ... oh wait that was about 6 years ago..
Well in all honesty, you must not be that big of a Star Wars fan, in which case this game wasn't really meant for you in the first place. It's about community, lore, and gameplay, and currently SWG has a balance of all three, and makes it work for them at this point in time, as it did in a different way ~6 years ago.

Oh soo throwing your money away on a bad game/movie is how you are considered a fan ? nice.We should pay and support every crap release ,soo we can get more crap releases in the future !!!
If you are having fun, fine, but trying to justify your "fun" is realy sad ... and I doubt it's fun.

First off, there is a 14-day free trial, even if you are planning to subscribe, it is a free 14 days of gameplay.
I'm not justifying my fun, I'm simply explaining my opinion, and sharing it with all those interesting in trying it, but are discouraged by the likes of you. You "doubt it's fun", so I'm guessing you haven't even tried it? Also, you should really brush up on your grammar skills, similarly your ability to pick the correct phrases and/or terms for what you want to express.
I'm a huge Star Wars fan, which is why I could never play SWG again, funnily enough for the reasons you give that fans should play, lets break that down somewhat:
"lore" Yep, being a huge Star Wars fan you should be really happy that there are dozens of Jedi, right out in the open.... in a timeframe when there were NONE
"gameplay" Lag, bug filled mess sums it up for me
"community" well sorry, most of the community I liked left in March 2005, the remnants left in Nov 2005
...The spread of secondary and latterly of tertiary education has created a large population of people, often with well developed literary and scholarly tastes, who have been educated far beyond their capacity to undertake analytical thought.
I recently resubbed after a 3 year break and am enjoying it quite a bit too.
Server transfers are coming up in a day or so and should really help the game thrive again.
These forums are notorious for having trolls invade every thread and try to bash it or make the game look like crap because they are still discruntled... just ignore em and have fun!
These forums are also notorious for being infested by SOE's viral marketers trying to trick people into subscribing to SWG.

The same could be said for pre-CU fanbois, who for some reason, feel compelled to repeatedly create alt accounts here to spread their vitriol.

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.

Ya I know this is like my 10th alt of the same account so I could keep posting.
To the OP glad you are having fun.
I think the real issue is.. why does every thread turn into a troll session. Whether its a viral marketer or a fanboi...
There is a free trial.. people can try it. They will either hate it or like it. I'd assume if the game is as big a pos as many of us think... a viral marketer doesn't achieve much.
So I prefer to pretend someone.. is somehow having fun and on that subject.. good for them.
Beyond that they aren't going to accomplish much.
Every forum I go to and general chat in many MMO's I play crap on WoW.. yet it continues to grow. So this viral marketing thing must not work very well. (viral marketing isn't always about getting more subs to your game its also about crapping on competing products).
Regardless.. again OP if you are having fun... more power to you.
*edit*
Oh I forgot to add any gripe I have is directly with SOE and Lucas Arts. When they come post here with official names I'll crap in their threads.. that is all.

If by "spread their vitriol" you mean "discuss the current game honestly" then I guess so.

Lol, 'discussion' isn't something I would attribute to most of that kind.
Besides, there's an entire section devoted to the pre-CU fanbois. I see no reason to get so bent out of shape over someone's enjoyment of a GAME.

Sorry, but server transfers will not make the game thrive. They are a sign of a shrinking game population.
There are trolls on both sides of the debate.
SOE is the one that made the game look like crap.
Its cool that you or anyone else likes the game... but many more do not.
The fact that some people will accept whatever SOE does to SWG and its customers and think that it is "good" boggles the mind.
SWG is NOT a very functional game right now, either in terms of technical issues or content. Lag is as bad as it has ever been, according to the one remaining player I keep in contact with. The latest instance, "The Battle for Hoth, (not a whole planet mind you, just an instance) increased lag for many people by a factor of 3. He plays on Bloodfin, and PvP is not even possible for some people because it turns into a slideshow.
As for "content", more grind collectionsand an instance that bugs often, is weak at best.
SOE is choosing to spend its "creative efforts" on more "content" for the so called Trading Card Game, which is little more than a dressed up illegal lottery and RMT-like activity targeted at kids. Why fix a game for people only paying $15/mo when you can get <$100 from some of the suckers chasing loot cards (there are several threads on this)?
Economy broken, Crafting, near useless, Servers near dead, SOE not caring.
SWG has had its time, but that time has passed.
SOE doesn't care enough to fix lag, bugs or credit farmers in the game anymore, so no one else should, either.
Server transfers should've happened a loooooong time ago. Even before JTL I remember calls for such. Galaxies, like Kettemoor, could've really used a healthier population.

I dont ever remember anyone asking for server transfers/merges before JTL.

My wife started playing the Sims again, and because of that she is lettig me expand my MMO experiences so that I don't grump about my mains sitting on their butts waiting for her to play...... she's agreed that i can have an all access account, and I am going to try SWG and M:O just to say i did. the OP, being someone that played it before and after, has influenced me to give it a go, but i'm going to track and wait for the server transfers to happen before i jump on board... see why i know that has All Access and if/where they are playing
"We aren't going to ... Period. End of statement."
ya. ok. whatever.
but what do i know, i'm only a vanbois i'm told.

I created a toon on bria last week to check out the server's population. While it is currently much larger than the population on Intrepid it is still far short of what Intrepid's was during pre-CU. I've been playing for over 5 years and I don't remember seeing anyone asking for server merges pre-CU.
Honestly, Being a pre-cu weaponsmith from Bloodfin, I am surprised at how SOE not only trashed the crafting system and economy, but have failed to do anything to help crafters in the NGE. The CU was annoying, but really the game was still very similar, sure i couldn't own rebel soldiers on Naboo with ease anymore, but they ARE soldiers, and i WAS a measly weaponsmith.
The NGE came...and pow. even a lvl 90 crafter was useless.
So sure, you may have a ton of fun running around force lightning/gripping anything you see, but is that really why you played SWG in the first place?
Think about that.
I'm glad that I was able to reach someone from my target audience.
EDIT: Pertaining to the population issues, yes it's a drag that they need to make them, but it's going to strenghten the already semi-strong servers. And it shows that the Dev's actually have the balls to make that move, and care about the population currently subscribed.

There is nothing wrong with people discussing the current game in the general forum as much as people like you might not like it.

That's because nobody was. This is one of the "truths" that the pro-SOE people want you to believe...that the game was in dire straits before the CU.
I wouldn't let that stop you, just hop onto one of these servers and see what you think:
High Population West Coast USA Server
Ahazi
Bria
Flurry
Sunrunner
High Population East Coast USA
Bloodfin
Chilastra
Eclipse
Gorath
Radiant
Shadowfire
Starsider
High Population Europe Server
Europe-Chimaera
Europe-FarStar

That's still too many servers. SOE should just merge everybody onto one server. That would at least give the current players a somewhat decent population for a little while.
the game is already supremely laggy on some servers, that would crash it probably.

That's the issue though, the pre-CU fanbois have no intention of 'discussing' the current game. All that kind is interested in is validating their hatred toward the NGE and it's players. Their inabability to move on prevents them from having any sort of discussion, and hence the reason why they need some many alts to post their vitriol here.
