If someone made a game that was a very fun, updated sandbox game, the WoW players might just like that better.  But they are never going to leave WoW if every other game out there is a clone of it.  To get the WoW crowd to try something else, the something else has to be significantly different.  I am sure they are getting tired of WoW by now since they've been playing it several years.

IMO, that's wishful thinking. This was true when the MMORPG population was very small, but not now that it's opened up to the masses.

Yes, people are getting tired of WoW. They will either play World of Starcraft when it releases, or they won't play MMORPGs anymore, and the next generation of gamers will play the new and improved World of Starcraft, which is just like WoW, only with different graphics.

These vast majority of people aren't going to play sandbox games, not if you release a really really good one, not ever.

You're not going to get 11 million people to play a sandbox game. A solo friendly, mindless quest grind, sure. A sandbox? No.

I know companies don't like to risk very much, but it's the only way the game options will get any better.

We need something DIFFERENT or people will just loose interest in the genre as a whole.

A tiny niche of players want something different because they don't like WoW. But the fact is, 11 million players in WoW, more players on MMORPGs than ever in the history of gaming, and you're worried people are losing interest in the genre?

What facts are you basing this on? The fact that you don't like WoW?

It's just that I know there's such potential for something better.

I am sure the people eating the cafeteria food that is WoW know in the back of their heads that they aren't getting everything the genre has to offer.

You're right I don't like WoW.  I think that these millions of people settled for less and I think they will get tired of WoW.  They probably already are tired of it.  I honestly don't see how a really cool sandbox game could go wrong when there are millions of people playing  a second rate game.

Start taking there computers or gaming devices away from them or closing down shops that don't care.

Am i the only one that thinks that it out of hand?.  Games were meant to have fun, why now does it bother me so much then to play.  Has this happened because of so many free games around and none seem to care at all about what happens. It's getting to the point where i do not even want to do Betas anymore......... /sigh

I wish people could understand this simple concept:

MMORPGS have NOT got worse, you, us, we and I have simply become accustomed to them. We understand the concept involved, we know what to expect, we know the underlying mechanics, we know how to min/max, we have oodles of online information on everything from secret unlocks to complete walkthroughs.

There is nothing left to our imagination, as 'veteran' mmo'ers. I remeber how exciting just the idea of Anarchy Online was when I read a tiny article about it, I remember how great UO sounded because of all the ungame like things you could do ~ grow stuff, craft things, own things.

Reading the description for the Agent class in AO all those years ago had my imagination running wild with the notion of disguise, infiltration and the like, as it was described in this manner. in reality it was jnothing of the sort, but I was not to know.

Once you and I were awestruck at the very notion of a persistant online world that continued to progress even when we hit the power off button, all those people playing, interacting.

We take all this for granted today, it was going to happen and nothing can replace that initial experience and so every new release will feel less and less impressive and become more and more familiar.

I think that, if they do it right, Star Wars: The Old Republic will be the next game that we see that is truly unique. I personally have no real interest in the game, but it sounds like they are doing some good things over there and it might finally break the WoW clone-ism enough to be something new while also having a chance of being hugely successful.

Just to clarify, it has always been about making as much money as possible. They didn't make UO or EQ hoping to make as little money as possible. Nobody spends their time and investment, hoping to go bankrupt.

Just to further clarify. UO and EQ developers were hoping to make a great game that would then make them tons of money. It seems like current developers are hoping to make tons of money and if they make a great game that is cool too.

The movies and music industry are kind of the same mind set.........Let's just crank out stuff as quickly as possible and make as much as we can........We're lucky to get 5 quality movies a year anymore....How many great songs are coming out every year??...... As for games, yeah these are businesses now not individuals trying to make a great game....They are trying to copy what is successful and make their money..... There are some games out there that are different from teh WoW/EQ clone model but in general players dont even give them a chance.......While they complain they want something different, the reality is they cant handle something too different.........

I am not worried about the WoW clones or the thousands of MMO games that repeat over and over or even if they are a Tax Right Off.

I am more concerned about the way things are going toward how people  Portray themselves in general and how Crime has become so apparent that even the the criminals will go to top extent to post thing on any one of the Uploadable sites just to brag about how they can brake the law and get away with it, with no worries about being cause because there is no punishment but a simple IP Ban.

The la must change. I have spoken to several people on this and it seems to be just that. Talk.

Like most things we know and live by. "Nothing will happen until it's to late".  The young ones do not understand, because it just a game to them.

they didnt make uo or eq thinking they might get 10 million subscribers either..they made  those games because they loved the genre..now its about getting as many subscribers as possible. do you really think war or aoc was made with the customers in mind..war and aoc were two big hype machines with  no substance to back it up.

If it makes tons of money, it is a great game.

You seriously think people are spending millions of dollars, and their attitude is, let's make a really, really crappy game because that's the best way to make a ton of money?

Games are about making money, always have been, including EQ, always will be including your favorite sandbox like SWG.

Same here, games are cash machines nowadays and dont offer really new and refreshing ideas like it was maybe at the beginning. The aim is only how can you melk the customer and bind them to your company.
