In Ryzom, a player has 300 bulk storage on himself, then he can buy 3 packers with 500 bulk storage each and a mount that he can ride and has 100 bulk storage. The player can take these with him through out the game world but they can be killed and then the player has a few days to retirieve what is stored on them ( never happened to me so no experience with that). The packers and mounts can not be teleported. The packers and mounts can also be stored in stables and are safe there and the player has access to the packer inventories while in the area of the stable. There are stables in all cities in the game world.
The player can also buy an apartment which really does not cost much. Apartments have 2,000 bulk storage. Alsy Guild Halls can be bought and have 10,000 bulk storage and it only takes 1 person to create a guild. Apartments and Guild Halls are only available in the Civilization Capitols and it does require the proper civilization fame to buy them but pretty easy to raise a civizilization fame if needed.
Only the player may enter his apartment which is instanced and players do not decorate their apartments. Same with GHs except have to be in the guild to enter and only guild leader and guild high officers can remove items from a guild hall and their is only 1 guild leader and guild high officers grow with number of guild members but is limited.
Yes, it is common to use packers as portable storage. You can buy them in main cities, and park them in the stables at those cities.
Packers eat food when they are moving in the field, and they can be attacked and killed. While in a stable, they do not consume food and are immune from attack.
If i remember correctly when a packer/mount dies you have around 70 days to loot the corpse before any items are lost .

Which roughly equals 72 RL hours, until the poor beast is devoured by scavengers.
