There is no real meaningful PvP in SWG.  The combat is broken.  You click and fire, there is no collision.  It's the standard turn-based combat.

There are certain "PvP areas" like Rustess or Mos Eisley.  It's hard to find people though.

Combat in SWG is the worst of any MMO I have ever played.  Even MxO is better.

    Tecmo Bowl.

Here's a video someone made of some early morning (I thnk it was around 2am EST) PvP from Chilastra over the weekend that someone made,

Tactics do play a part in PvP.  Taking advantage of the terrain (such as walls, buildings etc) can help you win a battle that you might not have originally won.  Using specials at the right times and in an appropriate sequence can change your success rate.  How you have your armour and weapons made, plus the way you have them modded can affect your success rate.

PvP'ing gains you GCW points which goes towards your GCW rank.  Each week, the GCW points you have for the week are added up and are counted towards your rank.  As you rank up you gain new GCW related rewards and eventually, when you get into the Officer ranks, you gain new abilities too.  These Officer ranks have decay though, so you need to earn enough GCW each week to counter the decay so you can keep the abilities that come with the rank.

There are also PvP bases that are specialised PvP zones.  Holding the zone under your factions control gives you access to Stims, which improve over time the longer your faction holds the base.

90% of pvp occurs in Restuss though, one location pvp ftl.

The Rank decays over time, it's a carbon copy of WoW's pvp grind (until Bliz revamped it, because it was a terrible idea), still tickles me that SOE copied WoW's pvp grind and implemented it right as Bliz shitcanned it because it was horribly flawed. If you're going to rip content directly from another game  the least they could do was make sure they were ripping the best bits, they can't even get that right.

PvP is overly dependant on buffs once again, ironically as the design of the CU and NGE were aimed at reducing the need to rely on buffs to over-inflate stats, another epic SOE fail. Don't take my word for it, there's plenty of bitching by current players on the official forums.

If it's purely pvp you're interested in, there's better examples in the mmo genre, even some f2p games have better pvp than SWG.

You aren't going to be able to go anywhere near pvp in the trial time and not a chance solo tbh

pvp itself got screwed up in swg, it used to be pretty good even with the broken game engine

now however it's got reduced to restuss(a ruined city both sides are fighting over for ssome unknown reason) where, for the most part one side camps the shuttle port for hours on end waiting for the numbers to change

it's also seriously loot orientated as ppl who do the hriocs grind will have 5 times the stats ppl others have

if u want a decent pvp time probably best to go somewhere else unfortunately

What exactly is "flawed" about the rank decay in SWG?  It's pretty easy to avoid....

Buffs are more a crutch then anything, alot of the buffs that people are getting aren't all that potent.

Same reason it was flawed in WoW and ended up with Bliz ditching it altogether, it's a blatant, mind numbingly boring grind. Bliz were smart enough to see that and change it. SOE, true to form, didn't give a shit and put it in anyway. All the content that's been added over the last year can be summed up in one word, grindtastic.

If you're actively PvPing, it's more common that you get the GCW without knowing about it.  When you PvP in the PvP zones, every 10mins or so the game will give you a reward of GCW (known as a GCW Tick) points based on the number of people in the area, who won and how long the battle lasted.

At my General rank, I need 15k of GCW each week to avoid decay.  In some of these battles I'll get GCW ticks anywhere between 1k to 2.5k (although I've had a few 3k ticks before...).  Combine this with the GCW recieved from the actual PvP and I can have the GCW I need to avoid decay in an hour or two.

I'm really not interested in the numbers involved, decay is decay, Bliz had the foresight to listen to their playerbase, who for the most part said it wasn't fun, SOE have never been blessed with such foresight or ability to listen to their paying customers though.

Simple facts, once more. Bliz did away with decay, SOE responded by actually implementing it even AFTER Bliz had done away with it.  Bliz have 11 million subscribers, SWG has.....

Bottom line is, Bliz know how to make a fun game, SOE don't.

I'm really not interested in what Blizzard has done. The numbers are important here.  The numbers clearly show that the rank decay isn't the big deal you're trying to make it out to be.

Maybe you should be, it'd give you an idea how a good  mmo developer goes about business, treats it's customers and reacts to their playerbases wishes. Maybe that's your problem Obraik, when your one and only point of reference is mediocrity it's easy to become accustomed to it and accept it

    HAHAH yeah right.

What was the complaint? "Um devs we actually had 15 people show up to PvP, which is about twice as much as usual, which was awesome! Only problem was all of the massive particle effects from all the specials made everyone fall out of their chairs from having seizures. I couldn't even see what I was doing because flying sparkly things covered my entire screen. Please fix ur hardwarez, too many people pvping."

I would have tried more PvP than just a duel when I got my free month, but I couldn't find more than 5 people on my server, and only 1 was actually atk.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Prime time on Chilastra, especially during the weekends, can see 80-100+ people trying to PvP in the same area.  Even during off peak hours in the early hours of a weekday morning (EST time) it's becoming more common to find battles with 60ish people all trying to PvP.

FYI, particle effects have little effect on server lag.  They don't have to be the cause of lag on your PC anymore either, as they added a slider that you can use to completely turn them off if you so desire.

Yeah, particle effects aren't the problem they once were, it's just layers and layers of bad code. It's not really the current dev teams fault, it's just the way the game has evolved, 2 huge changes to the core game, straight over the top of eachother was probably a huge mistake, and I'm talking about the logistics not the politics behind it. Unfortunately that also means that without a complete overhaul, or engine re-write, which is likely to be not financially viable now it won't ever be 'fixed', no light at the end of the tunnel with this problem unfortunately.
