Bad Community? Ouch!

talked to a friend a few days ago...and i asked him if he had played this game at all.  he told me he did but couldn't play it as the community was absolutely horrid....no one groups...or even wants to talk as he put it.  he used a different description (and having played many pvp oriented servers i knew what he meant) but basically said the majority of the players that he had encountered simply weren't very friendly.  i then checked a few sites including this one and couldn't believe it....every forum i checked reinforced that the community is absolutely terribel in this game....i have never seen so much negative feedback about the community on a new mmo....most new games you get a fairly decent community at least to start with.

so i justthought i'd post for some feedback...either positive or negative about the community that those who have played have encountered.  what is the community like and if it is bad....why specifically is it bad.  is it the game context that makes talking hard...or is there a large population of gamers that feel they are too good to communicate?  i was interested in trying the game however if the community is really that bad (as a good community is important to me in a MMORPG) then i'll skip it and continue playing the game i'm playing....feedback would be great :)

I think a lot of this is due to the fact that the chat system is pretty appalling, although Mythic are apparently addressing this issue.

Until this is fixed I won't be touching the game. I want my MMORPGs to feel 'alive'. People say that to experience the community in this game you need to be part of a guild. I'm sorry but I disagree with this. WAR is supposed to be about RvR; the whole realm working together, not various cliques going about their own business and not communicating on a wider scale for a common goal. If Mythic manage to find a way around this issue then I may give it another look.

    god not another one.

grouping is quick and easy, the open group system takes the hassle out of LFG. the devs  are looking at the chat system to refine it. i talk a fair bit, especially in guild.

the one major flaw with WAR is the amount of people who want to whine about it.

Yeah, the lack of an obvious zone wide chat is having an adverse effect on grouping and coordination in game. There actually is zone chat but most people don't seem to know how to use it and it doesn't show up well in the chat box.

The lack of official realm forums is another con in my opinion, but the few fansites around are somewhat filling a much-needed role in facilitating guild recruitment and trade.

If ou get in a guild you'll have a community.

if you remain guildless, players won't communicate with you. If you adress them or try to set up strategies in instance, people won't listen to you.

    My addiction History:
    >> EQ1 2000-2004 - Shaman/Bard/Wizard/Monk - nolife raid-whore
    >> WoW 2004-2009 + Cataclysm for 2 months - hardcore casual
    >> Current status : done with MMO, too old for that crap.

Only if there's already a group in the area. The lack of a zone chat channel hinders people from assembling and coordinating groups in the first place, thus they only form where players already are--leading to chronically empty or underpopulated PQs and RVR lakes.

yep, the fact that /1 has the same range as a /say causes issues there, but they should be implementing zone wide chat pretty soon... i hope.

Since you seem to be asking for feedback, I'll give you some:

I think that reviews on the community are mixed because it really does seem like there's no one chatting. This is an issue with the chat system that we'd all like to see resolved.

That being said, I have jumped into pick up groups a LOT in the game and every time I've had nothing but good experiences with friendly people.

Like in real like, you have to actually look to find good people. *shrug* Been fun for me.

Actually....the community is good, but the barriers to entry are very high.

Theres no zone-wide chat, so less Guild Recruit messages, also less general chitchat and funny that ensues.

I had to get to Altdorf/IC before i found a guild....10 levels in.    Until then it was essentially a solo experience.

To disarm the trolls/flamers(sic), i have played WH since about '87 , so i am predisposed to love this game.

However, the lack of a common chat really does kill things in the low levels. Being able to group by selecting the nearest group from a dialog box is not a social experience at all.

Once your in the group, yes, there can be interaction, but no impetus to stay beyond your own specific goals.

Good game, but so many things that are wide of the mark.   I can understand not wanting another crossroads or barrens in this game, but as consumers of mmo's we kinda exepct them now.  Even DAOC had a default guild you were thrust into from the start.

essentially, most mmo's are "come for the shinies, stay for the community", WAR seems to be "come for the shinies, maybe a community might happen by itself, despite no tools that engender the process."

I also wouldn't characterize the community itself as bad--it's just that communication can be difficult at times. As far as the quality of the community, I would say it's pretty average. You have some really nice, helpful players and some real jerks as well.

I really don't think you can blame all of it on the chat system. What is the point in chatting all the time when people right now are busy trying out different characters, running scenarios and doing PQ. Very few people are at max rank yet.

Would everyone just standing around an auction house telling chuck norris jokes, haz' cheezburgers, and claiming someone elses gear sucks be indicative of a good community? That to me says the community is quite bored with nothing to do.

I don't think that's really what I'm getting at here. I've never been a fan of mindless sitting around chatting stuff either, b ut interaction on the battlefield or even in warcamps trying to get organized can nbe a bit of a pain. *shrug*

One of my biggest quams with WAR at the moment is also the chat system.  I have joined rvr warbands/pq groups and managed to start conversations with my allies, so there are people who also have a need to communicate.  I kinda miss all the goofy conversations I've had in level chats in EQ2.  The world chat systems can get a bit annoying at times, but it would definately be better if they made the chat accessible and easy to use for the average player.

  • JonMichaelJonMichael Member Posts: 796

I have mixed feelings about the community.

I've run into very friendly people along the way, offering help, heals or asking to group with me.   I've also run into just as many jerks, especially in the RvR scenarios.

In the scenarios, I've seen healers refuse to heal because they don't like the way people are playing, people who take command and then call others "complete idiots" (along with some jaw dropping other names) and  people who demand for heals or they'll "kill you".  This is not roleplaying.

While I can understand frustration and kidding around .. this is not it.  It takes away from the fun value.

I certainly don't expect the entire playerbase to be friendly and I know there's lots of kiddies in the game... so I don't let it affect my gameplay.  If it gets to me, they get the famous /ignore or else I leave the scenario and join another.

Your best bet in WAR is to find a great guild that suites your taste and stick with them as much as you can.

Every once in a while I admit that it can be hard to get something setup in a PUG, but hey the randomness is to be expected and at times can result in some hilarious results. I often find that if I just say something throw them a bone people will start to talk or makes jokes or even try and coordinate some form of plan.

If you want to solely play in PUG with people who may be less familiar with the game than you are then things can get a bit stale at times. Join a guild then. With my current focus on RvR I only got to doing my first group instance last night and had a blast talking and joking with people  (and tanking a champion too)

Keep in mind most people on servers are guilded now and I believe using Vent or TS combined with no zone wide it can be quite. Also people are playing not hanging out as in WOW so it has a different dynamic.

I think it's due to the chat interace and because it's a new game. I remember LotRO being very quiet initially. And one of the few good things about LotRO now is the community.

As for people not grouping, I haven't found that the case at all! I'm constantly being invited to group.

Well, I personally am used to talking with guild members and not seeing incessant chat streaming across my chat windows from people who just want to shoot the sh*t.

The first time I ever saw such a thing was at the launch of LOTRO and I was horrified. Had to turn it all off.

So sure, let them fix the Warhammer chat system if it's broken. I'll just turn it off and talk with the people I'm in group with. Or if I join a guild.

Otherwise I have yet to see it used for anything but a steady stream of nonsense or comparing games or talking sports.

I say who cares. I'm hear to play a game not know why person "X" thinks game "Y" is like WoW or whether or not they are psyched for "Z" game to come out.

    Maybe it's a generational thing.

Well I would like to add my 2 cents worth!

Yes I agree the chat system lacks in many ways but to go and called the Community Bad or nonchalent is not the way to go...........Now I am colour blind and I can't see the mapping system at all (I know for a fact that I am not alone with this problem in this game), many times I have asked in /say for help in directing towards the proper area and NOT once was I told NO, get lost or whatever......I even had on 5 occasions had another Player bring me directly to the appropriate quest area and/or Item. Never was I told "figure it out yourself" and left to search randomly where to go next.  Maybe I was lucky?  Who knows?  But generally I have been very please so far with the Community.

Also, it is very important to know that many players that group either via PQs or even via the Scenarios tend to have their own goals when they join, that is true but saying that, most of the time I have been way to busy doing what my toon does best to actually start to type in chat.  Most of these palyers are not realy guilded together so using Vent or TS may not be the issue of why they are not chatting in these cases but I do know that when my Guid does do RVR in large Guildmate numbers they never use the Chat interface but talk it over in Vent.........so why is it quiet atm?  Could possibly be that the game is still very new and Poeple are in learning mode, once they make it up there to 40 and start creating Aults, we may see the Chat used much more when they interact with new players.  Again, just my personal experience but to call the Community Bad because teh Chat system is not up to par...............I think it is way to early for that!

Its worse to actually think about doing something then actually doing it!!!

All this is of course my opinion:

    - Chat needs a lot of love.  A lot.  Mythic is working on it, accordingly to them.

    - It doesnt matter how many in game tools devs put in an MMO, some people always have trouble to find groups and make friends.  This game has an in game tool (a button) which you touch and you can just join any grp in the vecinity that its open, if there is one.  So finidng groups is in fact very easy.

    - You will find the same amount of "rude" and "bad" people in any MMO.  There is no MMO that attracs more bad people than other.

    - This game allows people to solo. But the soloers wont get all the content done.  They wont be able to do PQs, for example... except if they are DoKs or WPs and just some PQs...  But you DONT need to do the PQs neither do all the content... as in any MMO.

Been a true soloer is not easy.  Mainly means a soloer will have to really accept that in RvR and PvE he/she is alone.  Many people dont like guilds but then complain about been solo.  There are very few soloers in MMO.

    - Been in a guild is essential if you want to access to some content and have people willing to help you to do content that you need.

    - Most people are already in the middle levels so if you roll a new toon, you will feel like the place is empty.  Happens to any MMO, specially at release.  People jsut tend to forget this happens hehe

    In resume:

Imho, the community is not worst or better than in other MMOs or internet as general... or than in life.

Mythic needs to improve the chat system and maybe consider to add voice in the game in a future xpac.

You should look and find for a guild or accept the life of a lone wolf.

The community is moving to higher levels as a mass so the low levels are more empty.

(This last poinit is the only real thing that worries me for this game... how will it be in 6 months for new people?  Will it be a problem?  If so, will Mythic make something about it?).

For me the game is extremely fun and the community is good (of course, I have a nice guild full of friends).

Try looking at the conan forums if you want to see a horrid community with even worse community managers.

aside from that, yes if you arnt in a guild there is little to no hope of socializing in WAR. But if you look at 2 things most everyone seems to be missing.....

1: VOIP guess what, it is the main feature that alot of people use. My guild even uses it in non pvp games. So VOIP =  no text chat.

2: WoW left a bad taste for socializing due to all the kids and their methods of saying things that irritated alot of gamers.

Another horrible community was Fury (R.I.P.)

    Playing: Not much actively.
Games played: to many to list, been playing MMO's since 2001

I'm liking the community, sure the scenario's spawns a few bad eggs, but no where near as many as in wow.

I'll lay odds I'm not the only one that likes the tranquility of this game, I seriously despise flooded chat channels ála wow's trade channel or general when the game was launched. General got switched off the second day I started playing wow.

It's just some of the gameplay aspects that are kinda putting me off right now, shame really.

  • keolienkeolien Member Posts: 198

I agree with the bad community part, but its only bad to me on the destruction side, no matter which server I roll on.

I have tried playing on four diffrent destruction servers and everytime its the same, People ninja loot, people dont group for public quests just zerg it, no cooperation during scenarios, etc. The highest I did manage to make on the destruction side was a lvl 12 chosen. After still seeing ninja looting going on in T2, enough was enough.

Then I rolled on a order server (ungrim) and have been loving it every since. I still do see some ninja looting but thats only in T1 scenarios, now that im in the T3 scenarios I havnt seen anyone ninja loot anything. (not even a potion )

As bad as I wanted to play destruction, there was no way I could play with the amount of skum and pathetic people that came along with it. So try both sides out before calling it quits, I know destruction looks 10x better but if your looking for a better community im affraid your going to find that on the order side.

Hello? There isn't a community in any game until after 3 months. These things takes time and there is always a lot of people playing for some weeks and the quiting in any game, and a fair % of them is often... special.

I have no idea how the WAR community will be, horrid or nice but it hasn't really formed yet. If you want a game with a real community you have to chose one that is at least 3 months old.  Just relax.
