I know every game has its share of fanatics but WoW's playerbase seems to be the most rabid fanatical fanbase around. Anytimes you go to a forum of a new MMO, its "if this game doesn't do X like WoW or implement Y from WoW this game will fail". anytime a game tries to do something completely different theres always some WoW fan that comes and says "Well because of the recent developement i will not be playing this game I will just stick to WoW.
Anytime you mention and in game related issue, if its PVE you will always have some WOW fan saying "well ive raided all the way up to X and got the sword of uber pwnage (purple) ... so thus with my vast knowledge of PVE this is how the game should be and if you disagree you probably didn't raid much"
PVP - "my arena score is 50000 i have uber god rank and i have never lost a match *here view my profile*. Agree with my ideas because if you don't you probably got pwned in PVP and suck at it so you don't know what your talking about."
and really how many times have we seen if a game crashes once you will see "X company has failed, you should take a lesson from Blizzard who are the masters of the polished game ....."
I mean christ when you go to a new game ... expect it not to play exactly like your previous game.

honestly, i find this with all jaded gamers, not just wow goers.
People are looking for their "special" feeling they got while playing their favorite MMO. They join new games with delusions of grandeur wrapped up into their heads, then log in realize it's not what their feelings were during the pinical of their play and quit/ rant through threads for the next 6 months.
Most who still play their game and bash others is because they've lost close friends who played the game with them, and seeing them go to new games that don't give them the same feeling that they had, they are angry at the game. It's like you "stealing" someones girlfriend and their ex- hates you for it.
Most recently is Warhammer due to it's release being new. Someone barely plays the game and calls the combat slow. Well, they've just come from playing a 70 in WoW, yes, it is slow..... meanwhile if you play a lvl 10-19 bg in wow it's just as slow. They just cant comprehend this because in teh pinical of their wow days it was much faster, they forgot its a progression, they level to 10 and bash the game 2 days after it comes out because it's not what they are used too.
Most savvy game vets understand this, but their gripes and complaints are different therein. They typically cant get past a nostalgic feel, unlike the losing a friend to another MMO though, they generally feel the MMO industry itself has betrayed them, continually putting out games in the WoW model, dumbing down mechanics and gameplay for fast action fun. So when a game releases in a WoW model, rather than compare it to what is / isn't like WoW (which is what the wow era kidz do) they simply bash the game as to easy, no storyline, no freedom ect. ect.
I basically believe, if you go into any game expecting something your setting yourself up for dislike. I was burned with this train of thought in the eq2/wow release days, luckily after them i never took with me into new games, my feelings and fun i had in previous ones, and have since enjoyed games a lot more. Many will change as I did, many will leave the genre, and many will just continue to do comparisons or bash games forever.
When you realy wanne see fanatic fans and players in game go to darkfall forums and play the game when its out, comepare to wow fanbois its way ahead of them:P
And for pvp well i know many wow players now also wanne play darkfall and they will suffer omg they will suffer they have never seen before, wow pvpplayers are sissy's comepare to real hardcore open pvp players:)
And dont forget majority of wow players are first time mmo's players so for them thats the standard of what a mmo should be they dont know other wise.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
to be honest wow has one of the worst mmo community.
its neto becuse they are all asshats..
its becuse no one wants to work together.
March on! - Lets Invade Pekopon
I wonder why 10million play it then?, they love asshats?:P

One thing to consider is the age of most wow players nowadays. I'm 27 now and i remember i used to be one of the youngest players in my guild at 24 when i started. So many people started playing around bc adn the older players have quit due to rl issues or just plain boredom. Now you have so many kids running around and they are playing a game that is gear oriented so naturally you have a pot of immaturity boiling over. For me personally i ignore them and i praise any and all companies for coming up with new games. I like choices and at 3 and a half years my wow career is over.
ps i wouldn't trade my wow memories for anything in the world. "hey go look through that hole you can see the last boss submerged under lava"
I totally agree with Leerix on his post, every opinion one makes is always based on past experience and will be compared to it.
I've played WoW from launch til about a month after BC, I liked it, but am no longer playing it because I had enough of it. Do I hate it? No. Will I tell anyone not to play it? Of course not, you should always check it out yourself to see if it's for you.
As for the community, I've realised that maybe there is alot of immaturity to be seen from WoW, unfortunately it's more from vocal one than those that remain silent. Also, given the huge playerbase, you'll obviously get alot more that are vocal, even if the % is the same compared to another game.
It's obviously too much to ask to have open minded views and let ppl play what they want without condescending remarks of their opinions on the game. That is where the problem is, THAT is where the immaturity lies. Ego is a big thing, and on something as anonymous as an online game...well, it gets downright bloated..pardon my french .
Bah, it's not. The WoW playerbase is very mild comparably.
Look at the Everquest or Darkfall -to be- playerbase, some are complete nutjobs there.
I wonder why 10million play it then?, they love asshats?:P
10 mill ppl play it cause any asshat that can sit in front of a PC can figure out how to play it...=P
.....and Cue the reason I left the community that respects no one. This infection may seem to be only on wow but its spreading to Xbox live to Ps3 and other mmos the gaming community is getting a 12 year olds mentality we need Will Smiths blood I am legend!!
Thus the reason I play on a RPing server.

WoW did a lot of lttle things to annoy me, but the big thing that finally drove me to quit is just how much time you have to invest to actually get anywhere post-level cap. I just can't play for 5-6 hours a day, every day, and 12+ on weekends and holidays.
Now, I know you can be a lot more casual than that but those kinds of guilds aren't the kind of guilds that make it very deep into the endgame, and I'd honestly rather quit than be 2nd best - which is exactly what I did.
I hear Blizz has a new MMO in development though, plus there's D3 next year, which isn't an MMO but if it's anything like D2 it'll be MMO-ish.
"When you realy wanne see fanatic fans and players in game go to darkfall forums ..."
Dag, you beat me to it.
The one thing about the Darkfall maniacs, if the game releases, and I hope it does, you can hunt those cats down and actually "kill" them. That's nice.
As to what the OP was stating. I don't understand why people bash other games than what they are currently playing. It makes no sense to me. When I moved from UO to EQ I understood it was going to be a totally different experience. Same when I went to AC, DAoC, and so on.
I believe it might come from the fact that WoW brought in so many that were new to the genre. I think that is a good thing personally, unfortunately being many players first MMO they are obviously going to compare other games to it. That is the part that 's me.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
I wonder why 10million play it then?, they love asshats?:P
It's more like if you take 10 million people youre bound to get at least half a million A-hats. It doesn't really help that there is no age limit, game cards and that any old junk of computer can run it.
A lot of the Wow players are nice players but moron always stands out. If the moron count is 1 in 20 then most MMOs got 10 000-20 000 morons. Compare that with half a mil and yuoll see what happens on the forums and in the chats...
Any game that big will have most morons, if say EQ2, would have 10 million players they would have about the same number of morons too. I really don't think morons get drawn to wow (I have another theory about Soccer however ), it's just numbers. Reason I started EQ2 instead of wow was because I know a few people I don't want to be in the same game with but that's not really the games fault.
While its true that ALL mmos definitely have their share of jerkos, WoW does dominate that market. The main reason for this is the ease of play of it. When you can solo any character in any talent tree to 70 without breaking a sweat because of the gameplay's ease, that tends to lend some "Iknowitallness". So youre gonna bring out the l33tness in people, especially kids who in real life are kinda powerless.
In other games such as EQ1 and FFXI types, the grinds are impossibly tough and long, and the gameplay is significantly more challenging. To take a character to max in FFXI, will take quite a while and unless youre a Beastmaster, you arent gonna do that solo and even then not fast. Youll need groups and lots of parties to make it. Thats the beauty of FFXI. If youre a jerko, you will get /blisted early and youll get a very bad rep around the game as the community is tight. And your leveling will stop. Period. So unless you meet a guild full 'o jerkos, you arent going anywhere. Youll quit that game before level 30. The gameplay FORCES you to be civil and decent to others, whether youre a needed healer or tank too. Better be a decent person.
In WoW, you can be as arrogant as you like and play all day. And since so many people play it, theres enough Jerkos to form guilds... and they do. The same thing will happen in Warhammer in a few months probably. You are not group/guild dependant on leveling in Warhammer so you dont really have to play nice. You can be as crass, idiotic all knowing and stupid as you like but youll still get max VERY soon; too easy to level up. You can just jump into any open groups as well that are doing PvE. Also Public quests make talking unnecessary. I doing Public quests for a few hours one day off/on and I swear, if I say there was a paragraph of conversation, Im probably exaggerating. And I dont buy "people were just focusing on the fun" either. Its just not a very social game at all. People are too busy trying to decimate each other. But I suspect the real jerkos will be just in the Scenarios over/over/over cause you can get exp faster that way and theres no real teamwork needed; exactly like in WoW Battlegrounds and pvp. Youre lucky in you find some healers in that cause people usually just wanna dps all day in there.. even the healers.
