That's an extremely weak argument, because you didn't answer my question. I asked you what you consider trading, questing, buying skills etc. to be? I would most definitely consider that part of gameplay. Essentially your argument is centered around gameplay being combat. So if I play a sandbox game and don't partake in combat I'm suddenly not playing the game? Such as crafting in Vanguard, or displomacy for example.

A chat room, perhaps a CORPG, or MMOG, but not an MMORPG.

It fails in one simple area, if I can't interact  with any and all of the players its not really a proper MMORPG.

For what its worth, I don't really think AOC is a proper MMORPG with its instanced design, its more like GW's

And in the end, it doesn't really matter does it.

First off let me start by saying I have been playing GW since its very first beta. And I still play it today.

I think the reason some say it is not a proper or true MMO is because the instances are closed to a limited number of people at a time.  This was Anet's answer to player feedback whom said that the thing they hated the most about MMO's was havng to fight other players whom camp out bosses and bots camping desirable spawns keeping players whom care more bout playing than ingame money..from completing quests and missions.  When I used to play SWG and EG2 these were HUGE problems..you neeeded to kill a certain boss or spawn but you would speed days or weeks trying to not because you failed but because you had to fight campers and bots.  Anet took this to heart and made GW different in a way that gives every player a chance at the good stuff and a chance at completing missions and quests thus improving the fun of the game.

Does this make it any less an MMO? Not really.  Anet which was founded by former blizzard developers from the WoW franchise, wanted to make the game fun and different at the same time. Most players I know do not like having to fight bots and campers just to finish a mission or quest.  They dont realy like having to fight bots and campers just to fight in a dungeon that may or maynot be a part of the storyline.  But it seems the very thing Anet did to put fun back into gaming, is what people scream bout saying its not a true MMO.

At no point does the Massive Multipler in MMO say you have to fight every othe rperson logged in in order fo rit to be a proper MMO.  Massive Multiplayer means a large gathering of people playing the same online game.  Well,  large gathering of people play GW ast the same time.  Thats still an MMO. MMO is not limited to games that have open instances..that was never the definition.

    Anyhow thats my two cents.

Second Life, Sims online are mmo's and do not have combat.

What does this have to do with the discussion about mmorpgs? We play games to enjoy combat but that does not define a mmorpg. Your argument is weak at best.

The Saga of Ryzom, Eve Online, The Sims Online etc. You are in no way forced to participate in combat. So please get your facts straight.

i dont know much about ryzom but on eve you are always in pvp mode from what i understand. the sims online isnt even fun anyway who wants to pay a monthly fee to simulate real life anyway? dont even get me started on second life from my experience i saw porn i never knew existed or even dream to think of.

lets go back on topic shall we? everything you do in a town in this game aids you when you leave town. so without leaving town and doin missions, quests, or pvp its pointless isnt it? so the main focus of this game is when you go by yourself or with teammates to do quests, missions, or fighting other teams in pvp. this game is revolved around combat as in most mmo's. and you only do the combat with your teammates and with the other teams in pvp which isnt the majority of the players in the game. its not a mmorpg. you are competing with everyone but not excatly playing with everyone. its a corpg.

think of it this way. whats the difference between a town in guildwars and the lobby or whatever its called  from warhammer 40k? you move around a character in guildwars. heres another example if you still dont get it. gunz the dual when you first log in. you can equip your person, talk to other people, and look for a room to play the game. same thing is in guildwars. you talk to people, buy sell and trade things, look for teammates to go out and do quests or whatever. people dont consider gunz or warhammer 40k an mmo.

Yes lets get on the topic. GW is a mmorpg. Not your convoluted reasoning behind why you deny the truth. It's ok that you don't believe that there is no true rpg in the mmo if your not killing or attacking. But the rest of us are willing to have an open mind and realize that you defintion is not an accurate one. Also just because you don't like a game does not mean it isn't a mmo in truth. You are not the judge of these things.

And yet another one... Guild Wars is in some ways even more massive that any other MMO. Because of they ground-breaking server technology. In how many games can 4.5 million players communicate, without changing servers? So the community can be way more massive, just make some friends, and you can have endless discussion. Even if it is instaned. Because it is istanced you have decent quests (one of the only games with decent quests IMHO). Nobody steals your loot, nobody steals your kills, etc.

+ the community is one of the best things about a MMORPG. You can communicate with 4.5 million people, that makes the gameplay pretty massive. ;)

You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.

CORPG or MMORPG, what does it matter? It is a good online game anyways and the second biggest multiplayer RPG game if you trust X-fire statistic.

But GW2 will be more closer to other MMOs in many ways.

I really don't see the point of classing this game anyways. But it is a nice game, particulary Prophesis and EOTN.

I agree... I love me some pre :) I do like NF for the heroes though. Damn who am I kidding I love the whole game.

GW2 is going to be sweet as long as A-net does not move to far from what made GW great. And yes that will be a true mmorpg :P
