It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!
Reason for this post is because I wanted to cite one of my pet hates about trying to have a discussion on these forums.
A lot of the time when I want to get involved in a discussion I will see several posts from people who will say that the particular topic has been discussed before. This is almost guaranteed in subjects involving religion or theology, and the like, or major political issues, such as nuclear arms. To those people I shall say this. If I want to have a conversation with others, concerning these issues, then that is my (and anyone else's) right. Afterall, this is a FORUM - the definition of which means; 'a place to go to have a discussion or debate'!
Yes, I know that certain topics may have been discussed a lot in the past. That is because they are IMPORTANT to people. If I wanted to read somebody else's discussion that happened before, and might not even be on the same viewpoint, then I would use the search facility. But seeing as I might want to actually DISCUSS the topic, then I shall feel free to start a new thread. Afterall, I may have not been around for the previous discussion, or may have some information to add. In any event, even if I were to add a post to an old thread, I would then get flamed for 'necro-ing', so a person just cannot win. I bet it is the same job's worths who post a necro-flame that also site that a topic has been discussed before.
Finally, why do these people even spend the time to post saying a topic has been discussed before? So what if it has, just ignore it if it does not interest you, and go and get involved in a thread that does. I often see the same topics being discussed over and over again in The Pub. It does not annoy me, as that is the purpose of the forum. New people come to the site, or people who have never taken part in a particular conversation before. Therefore who am I to deny them their right by posting something along the lines of 'This topic has been discussed before, don't you know how to use a search engine?'
So if you are one of the people who do this, please can you tell me why you do that?
In any event, please don't reply if you intend to flame.

I think some people are more used to forums that are really anal about that. Go look at the Penny Arcade forums, for instance. They have massive threads on certain topics which are dozens or hundreds of pages long. Pages, not posts. That means thousands of posts.
I have no idea why people like that. It's nearly impossible to track individual threads of a conversation, and if you're new to a thread, you have a lot of reading to do if you want to have any idea of what's going on. Basically, you're locked out if you're not a hopeless forum nerd. You can pop on here, read what the OP says, scan the replies, and add your own comments to a few threads. I spend like an hour here every few days, and that's usually when I'm doing something else on my computer at the same time. At the forums where megathreads are the rule, you can look forward to spending an hour each day just reading the latest crap on the threads you're subscribed to.
I believe this topic has already been discussed.
I agree. I've come across a lot of great stuff for the first time on the same threads that people knock the OP for making because of similar posts in the past. This forum does not move extremely fast, which is what is so great about it. But another thing that makes it such a good forum is that it does move at least a page or 2 of posts every 24 hours or so. Personally, I try to check it once a day, but sometime I have other things to do and I like to always have these 2nd or 3rd or even 4th chances if I missed something I would have wanted to read about or see.

Cabe you agree with what exactly? I believe Gameloading was making an ironic comment, and it was quite funny, so what exactly are you agreeing with Cabe?
