Impressions from new CoX player.

Please bare with me as this could be a long post.

I recently sorted out trial accounts for my Fiance and best friend as we've been looking for a decent MMO since the NGE hit SWG. I myself did a trial of Heroes last year and thought it basic, but then again basic can also mean fun as i still get hours of enjoyment out of my age old games for Spectrum and Commadore 64.

Once my fiance was in the game she found it a tad tedious to start with but stuck it out, i purchased the CoH/V double pack for us both and since then she's got into it more and started to really enjoy it.

The reason why i'm making this post is to give my first impressions of the game and one thing in particular that upset me. First off the game seems quiet even though it's still slated as one of the most played MMO's today, this could be cause i'm only a low level still and most people are up in the end game regions, who knows (Defiant server is the we play on).  Overall gameplay is repetative but enjoyable, it's what i'd expect from a game of this sort and therefore holds no suprises for me (unless things change at higher levels).

From a new players point of view the game would seem awesome, as a 7 year veteran of various MMO's the game seems easy but fun in comparison to some.

The one upset i mentioned above was not being able to make the Hero i wanted, at first i wanted a mix between Captain America and Flash, in game terms this would be a Shield using scrapper with the speed of Flash. When i selected Scrapper i found i couldn't have what i wanted (i even checked out the other archtypes and found no shield use powers at all). This is a big deal for me as, although some may deny it, EVERYONE at some point in their life has dreamed or wondered what it would be like to have super powers or watched a super hero film or series and thought "if only i could do that". Now although i'm from England (born and bread Yorkshireman) Captain America was an idol for me when i was growing up, not for the patriotism he portrayed but for the mere fact that he used a shield rather than offensive items/powers. I'm hoping that one day an update will come out (sooner than later i hope) where i can be what i always dreamed of being.

anyways enough ranting from me for now.

you all have a good time and hope to see more in CoX.

    Glad you like the game.

The shield powerset is set to be released with the next issue, and can be combined with every singlehanded weap powerset. As for the amount of players, are you playing on EU or US servers? i know there's always people on when i'm playing on the Freedom (US) server, and i'm from europe, so i always play in the "downtime".

Try the freedom server, or justice, I forget the other, but freedom was always a well populated server.

I played CoH on and off since launch. It's lots of fun. I just wish there was a PVP server as PVP is restricted to 3 or so controlled zones.

As for simple, at high level the game gets more complicated. Powers selection and usage also is more complicated. Especially with the invention system.

I am also a SWG vet from launch. I left when NGE hit disgusted at what they did. Recently went back last month to try free vet month. I was shocked I had fun. I am now resubbd. NGE is greatly improved. The game is very playable for me again. The old target system is back, terminal missions, treasure maps, expertise gives variation to classes, beast master is back even..

Enjoy CoH it is a very solid game. Powers are tons of fun, and although there is no shield power there is martial arts, and super speed. So atleast you can be a unarmed Capt America type. Capt was always a badass martial artist even without his shield. His shield was just a bonus.

Also keep an eye on Cryptics new Hero MMO Champions online. The powers are said to be totally customizable. Even custom Archvillian you can make as your very own Archenemy.

Cheers for the heads up on the Shield powers Skinnys, hope it's an actual item like i'm thinking of..

@Shohaduka : Yeah i picked SWG up again a few months ago, still wasn't impressed with it to be honest m8. These things happen though and i wish you all the best with SWG as i got a good 3 years out of it. With regards to Champions online i'm no longer interested in it, read soem MMORPG forums and one post in particular, OP had linked a video interview with Jack Emmert and he himself had mentioned the words "button mashing" in reference to it's combat system, this one thing alone has put me off Champions online for good.

Hehe, that's one thing about Jack Emmert. When he was in charge of CoH he would often get asked "how is this powerset / archetype supposed to contribute to the team" and his answer would always be about how busy he was pushing buttons.

"Jack, if the tanker is able to taunt all of the enemies, group them together for AOEs, and withstand the damage easily, why would a team possibly need a controller?"

"Well the other day I play my controller, and I was busy using Thunderclap and Crushing Field. And then I just go back and forth between Propel and Gravity Distortion."

Hey, genius, that wasn't the question!

    Argh, but I digress.

If you're on Defiant than you are on the European servers. Unfortunately they're not as populated as the American ones. (Which is of course a self-propelling problem because Europeans that play will then avoid the Euro server, and so on. And the versions are different, so you can't just "play on Freedom" which I think some people around here have as a macro.

You should check the official forums and see A) what time people play, and B) if they are organizing anything. I find that seeking out Task Forces is a great way to find high quality teams, provided you have a few hours at a stretch.

You also might want to see if the server has a good badge collecting channel - I bet it does. That's useful because even if you don't see a lot of people at your level range, that type of global channel lets people see what is going on so they can switch to an alt and join you.

    Currently playing:
    DC Universe
    Planetside 2
    Magic Online
Simunomics, the Massive Multiplayer Economic Simulation Game. Play for free.

This game has stayed on my PC for over 4 years now.  Other MMO's came and went but I never really stopped enjoying CoX.  Sure I'd get the occasional itch for some fantasy type hack-n-slash, but I always returned to my scrapper.

Course since CoV, my mastermind and widow are taking up more time than my scrapper nowadays.

Yes, Shield powerset is expected for the next Issue.  So you can make your Capt America/Flash combo with Shields and Superspeed (among others).

  • The gameplay is definitely repetitive in the lower levels, unfortunately.  For me I do not start feeling great about a character until about 26 or 28.  Once you are decently kitted out in powers then it can be pretty cool.

The major downfall of CoX is that the content is repetitive not so much the gameplay.  Best thing for this is to play in groups of varying sizes.

Yeah and servers can vary widely in Population Infinity has a decent amount freedom has a whole lot and some of the other can be fairly low especially Villain side.
