Vehicle combat on the way?

ObraikObraik Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 7,261

It would seem, from an interview with Smed, that Hoth will also bring vehicle combat to SWG after all these years...

I think people have the wrong impression about Star Wars Galaxies. We still have a very active live team. We have a bunch of new content just out, and a bunch of new content in the pipe. Have they talked to you about what's coming? Vehicles in battles on Hoth? It's amazing. It is expansion-pack level content, and it's going to be included for free as part of the release. We could have done a straight-up expansion pack but we decided not to do it that way because of the history with the game and expansions. We want to focus on the content. I think it's a really good game now. We think the content is there, the polish is way up.

The whole (which is kinda short for an interview...) thing is here, http://www.massively.com/2008/07/16/john-smedley-on-star-wars-galaxies-reconnecting-with-players/

This would be the same guy that said "the CU is here to stay", so sure it may sound cool, believe it when you see it though.

Therein lies the problem ,"After all these years" .. Why has it been all these years ? Because rather than add to the game they have continually dismantled it . Only now has the focus turned to new development , After all these years you would think everyone has the right Idea about SWG Smed. Your decisions have destroyed whatever chance this game had at success . Noone believes in your team John , That's because of you.. face it.

Many people would have loved to try these expansion like additions !! However after crashing and burning at your hands two times over , We have all decided to let you take this last flight alone ..

I agree, content like what the game is getting now should have been happening from the start but we all know the story of what happened there.  I'm not one to dwell on the past and for those of us that play and enjoy the game of today (which is the main purpose of this forum...), this will be pretty big, if it eventuates.

But it's only the Hoth instance that will have vehicle combat, and I thought I read that Hoth will not be PvP. Tthat kinda seems like a let down IMO.

"Have they talked to you about what's coming?  Vehicles in battles on Hoth?"  Man that sounds a lot like "how would you like to see guild-controlled star destroyers?'

"I think people have the wrong impression about StarWars Galaxies" sounds a lot like "the response to the NGE has been overwhelmingly positive."

actually it is, as can be seen by the large number of games that have failed when trust was broken, and the few who have succeeded by keeping it.

No, the industry based on creativity and the passion of the people who make the games and try to provide an entertaining experience to as many customers as possible within the confines of their available resources and abilities.

YOU trust they will make all the decisions that will make YOU individually happy which is always unrealistic in a mass market.

All games are based on creativity, this is a game that you happen to subscribe too, a game which you invest time into, so when you invest time into a game which you like it automatically has a creative team which you 'trust' to make the right decisions. Just to be clear, decisions are not "hey lets fip this game on its head cos' I think Ive got a really fun idea", decisions are thought out processes.

For eg. If you subscribe to a magazine (its a nice magazine.. very creative and big pictures) which every month has a piece of a dinosaur that you get "free" to build a T-rex after 42 editions (you really like T-rex's), 3/4 of the way through they change the pieces to a terradactyl and told to "get over it", thats a loss of trust and no matter how often you get told its more iconic of the Jurassic period its not what you originally wanted when you agreed at the begining to purchase 42 editions of the magazine to collect a T-rex.

Why play a mmorpg when the rules are changed contstantly, why invest in it? because mmorpg are investment/hobby/game, which you can share with other people. If I buy a single player game I know what I have got is a creativley made game (if not then I recommend no one to buy it thus the cycle begins of the game failing as its poo) and I enjoy it, till its completion and explore as much as I can.

Creativity and Trust are 2 separate elements. Creativity is a given when you play a game but Trust is earnt and if lost (in any aspect of life) can cripple any future decisions regarding whatever topic.

Back to OP point, I dreamt of vehicle combat, especially when they started to make multi-passenger vehicles, I though they would at least consider people to be able to fire from the back of the skiff.... but alas there was no movement.

Re. "YOU trust they will make all the decisions that will make YOU individually happy which is always unrealistic in a mass market."

No, I don't trust that.  This would be a very self-centered and unreasonable expectation.  I expect that when I'm told my profession is going to be revamped, that the company promising this isn't actually planning to delete it.  I also expect that when I'm told about an expansion that is only going to have viable features for 12 days, that this information be shared with me before I pay for it, not after.  I trust that if the president of a company says he's going to fast track server mergers, that server mergers will in fact be fast tracked.  I trust that when a company says they're going to fix something as important as collision detection in their game, that they do in fact fix it.  I trust that when a company says that a quest is working, that it is in fact complete and functional, not incomplete.

None of the expectations I've listed regarding basic trust have anything to do with individual gamestyle preference.  None of them, whatsoever.  They all have to do with honesty about the service I'm paying for.

MMO's are a service industry in which people pay for a service that is advertised to them.  If the company cannot be trusted to communicate honestly about that service, then people aren't going to pay for it.  Well most people aren't, evidently.

If you don't recognize this, I think you'd fit in very well at SOE.  Their history suggests that they have failed to grasp this basic reality.  They seem to think that people are dissatisfied because personal whims have not been catered to.  This viewpoint ignores essentially all of the issues I've listed above.  I'm sure a few people are interested in being catered to, and feel let down when they are not.  But, the vast majority of people that have left SWG and likely won't return have had trust broken regarding one or more of the issues I've highlighted.

I do agree that your development dept. should have the passion and creativity you speak of.  But management and marketting need to then communicate about that creative effort honestly and accurately.  Your creative effort should also be basically functional, and if you want to be successful, it should tap into the interests of your audience.  This should be based on sound market research.  Furthermore management should have a cohesive vision for the creative direction of the gaming experience, so that this month's creativity doesn't invalidate all of last year's.

Now, back to the OP regarding hints at vehicle combat.  Would I like to play a game with vehicle combat on Hoth?  Absolutely, that's a real gem from the StarWars universe.  Will I pay money to SOE because Smed hints that this is coming to the game soon?  Based on his track record of hints and promises, and of me paying money based on them in the past only to be let down and feel misled--no I won't.  Why not?  No trust.  Why no trust?  Smed's talking.  His voice creates words that don't turn out to be true in my experience.  I no longer value his words, and will not make decisions involving my money based on them.

LOL, Obraik you NEVER cease to amaze...

Where is the expansion that Smedley promised in 2006?  Where are large ships?  Where is collision detection?

Give us a break, Smedley is telling people want they want to hear, and you are spreading his false message all over the internet...

I know what he's talking about. It made me sad when I saw they added gunships to the game because it made me think about how awesome they would have been back when the game had a big enough population to crew a gunship.

    Sooo...

You are saying that you don't play the game anymore but don't want it to be developed further because they would add things you wanted when you played and that rubs you the wrong way...right?

Sort of petty on the people who do play, don'tcha think? Why would you want to deprive the players who are currently paying subs of stuff? The amount of subs is irrelevant, you just want to take from them because you didn't have it and you don't pay anymore.

Kind of a selfish outlook on a video game IMHO.

Anyway, have fun with the vehicles guys.

We enjoy our gunships with way more than full crews + escort fighters (also player ships) in deep space on our "light" server. 2 nights ago we were up with our rebel gunship packed with 25 people and had a escort of 7 other players in their fighters vs about the same amount of imperials in deep space.

I am sure on a server that is really into space (Starsider for instance) much larger battles go on.

    And yes it is awesome.
