Hacked accounts

DistasteDistaste Member UncommonPosts: 665

I was reading the AoC forums for another thread here and came acrossed the problems with hacked accounts and no customer support for those people.

One person said it is always the users fault and never the company. This is of course absolute BS so I figured someone here might want to inform them of their wrong-ness.

MU Online Global had its ENTIRE database released in the Summer of 2004. This included well over 500,000 usernames and passwords that were released to the public by a hacking group.

I really hope that Funcom steps up and adds some security to stop bruteforce/dictionary attacks and I REALLY hope that it isn't a compromised database. Best of luck to all the AoCers in getting your game secure!

Hmm well I think most accounts are hacked through downloading and installing of mods, or by sharing account info with these gold farming sites, but I don't disagree its all the users fault, mostly it is the user but that doesn't mean the company could never be hacked into.

Someone needs to lock this thread and ban the OP for questioning Funcom security.  Don't talk about AoC that way!!!

Don't really see how it's Funcom's fault if the user use a password from a dictionary...

It's always the users fault realy, look at WoW how many accounts are hacked daily, but the people who get hacked are either too dumb or underaged to understand what has happened.Easyest way to hack someone is post a video on youtube: Super gold Hack for X game, send us your email adress and we will send you the tool, you download the tool, and voila it doesnt work and the poster of the vid got himself a free account.

P.S I have several friends who have being hacking WoW accounts and it's very easy ,ive never done it myself.

Yes because using something from the English language is always bad practice! I'm not saying it is never the users fault. Trojans can easily slip through the cracks and get into a system through even well know sites. People pick stupid passwords(1234567). However, when the game does not have a cooldown/limit on the number of attempts a person can use to login it makes the hackers just that much easier. It doesn't even have to be a trojan they can literally just set up a program and let it run thousands of attempts.

Funcom, Blizzard, SoE, Mythic, and any other big name MMO companies need to start adding extra layers of security to help prevent these types of threats. Even a little keypress feature that most Asian mmo's have would help out.

These are the worst passwords possible.  You should never use a password that could be known by someone else.  Birth dates, animal names, friends names, all are very easily guessed.

Its not that hard to choose a random number and letter based password.  Just write it down and as often as you log into an MMO you will remember the pass in no time.

    It's a Jeep thing. . .

Yeah, you're right. It is ridiculously easy to scam an account.

it is a little better but still crackable if someone can attack it with a program...

I always use a saying to make a nuemonic.

Something like...  I Love AoC The best  so I can remember the saying.  They I make it into a password.

    IluvA0CtB3st

Anyway you get the idea.  You can play with the saying to get something shorter.  Maybe IluvA0C! so it is only 8 characters.  Or you can go with other things like Ih8tbman for I hate batman :P

This isn't Funcoms fault. There is not a single MMORPG that is hacker proof. If a hacker that possesses the knowledge to get into the database and acquire information like thisa and  wants to do it they can.

  • MoodahMoodah Member Posts: 181

the best way to do it is just take an entirely random combination of letters and numbers. Something like 808cg492m. After you type it in 15 times, you will remember it out of your head.

When you make a password, never use names or words of any sorts.

A bad password is short and looks like a name or a word.

A better password is long and uses random letters and numbers, and perhaps also symbols, like this:

    h3na84m&f#n)kl1B

You won't find that in a dictionary.

The problem is ofc remembering this, you basicaly have to write it down, - not on your computer, but somewhere you are sure noone else but you have access to.

Using at least two symbols, two letters, two numbers, and altering from lowercase to uppercase to create an original password is the most secure.

Open notepad, and just slam your face onto your keyboard a few times and try to find a good snippet out of that is a way too.

Welcome to the INTERNET, where people can click on a screenshot that might carry some sort of hidden trojan, undetectable, afcourse company's that offer a form of public service needs to have sufficient security, but overall if people want to hack something they will find a way to do so.
