Sony has lost over $3 billion on the PS3

This may end up sinking Sony in the Console Market.  Microsoft can afford to lose billions on their gaming console unit.  Sony can't.

Microsoft has a market value of about 253 billion dollars and a profit of 16 billion this past year.  Sony has a market value of about 48 billion dollars and a profit of 1 billion this past year.  (That is for the entire Sony company, all of the divisions not just games)

Not only that but I remember when Microsoft entered the gaming console marketplace they were sitting on around 40 billion in cash reserves and wanted to win badly.

My guess is that gaming will move back to PCs as the primary source.  And instead of manufacturer specific hardware we will see developers making games that will run on lower end "Gaming PCs".  Heck out of this we might even get a PC game friendly operating system.

    Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

    Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

If you build a $2000 PC to run Age of Conan, you're just an idiot.

I'm on a $600 PC and games look nicer than any console.

Don't forget that consoles don't come with TV.

Most PCs don't usually come with monitors. You just end up paying more for those that do.

I am not a Sony Fanboy but, On their behalf the playstation 3 is a superior gaming console just in its specs alone. I have seen alot of games side by side xbox 360 vs. ps3 and for the most part the ps3 looks better graphically and it seems to play smoother than xbox. They may be losing money now ,but it will pay off in the long run. Games just get better and better as developers get more and more familiar with the systems they make games for it will be interesting to see some of the games that come out for it in the next couple of years. Sony made a Big Mistake in thinking that people would just fork over almost 600 bucks for a game system, that was their error in judgement. Xbox 360 has more games out for it which gives it the edge, but with all the system failures alot of gamers are not happy with microsoft either. If I ever can get of my PC log enough to play a console I would consider a ps3 just for the fact I believe its a better system spec wise. Cell Processor is and awesome technology just look what was powering the new world record Computer.

PS3 is junk... Seriously, no one cares about seeing everything detailed down to the nose hairs. I don't wanna spend $600+ for 1 or 2 good titles i'll end up beating in a day.

IMO it's all about the XBOX360 and Wii.

Correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure that this is how consoles work. They usually don't make money of the console but the software sales makes up for the loss of the console.

M$ and Sony both work off a different model then Nintendo.   Nintendo never sells their hardware for a loss.   Nintendo has also been in the console business for close to 30 years.  Surprisingly even with the massive install base the PS2 had, they didn't make that much more then Nintendo off their game division during the same time frame.

You're wrong. Sony isn't the only company that makes titles for the PS3... Take Sega of instanced. Also how can they make up for it... If they can't even sell consoles.

True, they aren't the only company to make games for the PS3, but they charge the other companies to put a game on the PS3.

Let's take Resistance's sales which has been 2.5 million. Now lets take that times 60$ per game, That is 150 million. Now lets say Sony gets 5% of Naughty Dog's sales you get 7 million and 500 thousand.

Now there are much more games than just Resistance so you can see how much they might end up making.

The PS3 is doing horrible in console and game wise. If people aren't buying consoles, than ps3 games wont sell. You're making it sound as though every ps3 owner buys every ps3 game or people just buy ps3 games but not the console. Sony is already out of the console war.

    Gameplay > graphics.

Nintendo showed the world this has always been the case.

And after the GB, DS they now show it with Wii.

Some people should know the answer now why Conan is such a mess: because gameplay > graphics.

    Simple really.

That may be the only reason YOU might get it. But believe it or not, there are far more people that aren't willing to fork over $600 for a console, just to play ONE game title. Especially not during a recession where you have to end up asking yourself "Should I save money for gas? or to eat this week?" Sorry, but video games/consoles don't even enter into this equation.

Edit to add: Oh, I'm sure you may not like to hear this. I know I didn't either when I heard it from my in-law, but once you start growing up. Video games WILL become less and less important to where you will no longer be a "gamer" That's the solid truth. You may play a couple of games, but you'll never be the same, it's just a fact of life. It may seem to you that Final Fantasy is SO important that you are willing to fork over $600 for a ps3, but trust me, that WILL change.

And even if it was true, those people against the Xbox are anti-american and are terrorists and should be dealt with swiftly!

Sorry lol! I just couldn't help myself. But I do agree that, out of the 2, the 360 is the better deal IMO.

Here's the problem:  Sony spent so much time pimping out the console, they forgot to make any games for it.

The whole "sell the console cheap, make money on the games" model doesn't work if you don't have any games.

Think you paid too much for your Playstation 3? Don't expect any sympathy from Sony.
In the company's fiscal 2008 annual report, Sony revealed that they've now lost roughly $3.3 billion (that's billion with a B) on the Playstation 3 since its launch. That breaks down to $2.16 billion in 2007, followed by a notably smaller but equally daunting $1.16 billion loss in 2008.
The reason? Pricing the console below its production cost. That's right - that hefty $599 you paid for the PS3 back when it first launched was significantly cheaper than the cost of producing it in the first place, and while the retail price has come down some, the losses keep piling up.
Investors have reason to sweat. In a statement, Sony claimed "the large-scale investment required during the development and introductory period of a new gaming platform may not be fully recovered." They went on to note that they've invested a great deal of money into R&D for the console, a sum they might not be able to recoup if the PS3 "fails to achieve such favorable market penetration."
Sony fanboys should take heart, however. Losing money on hardware is relatively common in the video game biz, as companies routinely lower prices to sell more units and thus stimulate software sales. Sony's game division saw a 26% sales spike last quarter, a trend they expect will continue on the strength of strong exclusives like the recently released Metal Gear Solid 4 and the upcoming sequel Resistance 2.  ENDQUOTE

Not only is it the 3rd place in the Nexgen consoles and the new fertile ground for SOE for MMOS , its in debt .  I would just sale it as a Blu Ray player that also plays games

For some reason I have a feeling your are a douche in real life. Sorry just a feeling
