Hello, I cancelled my subscription about 3 months ago, because I have a rather low end computer. I used to hitch fairly bad, was just wandering if the new latest patch had fixed the hitching problem, or atleast fixed it a little bit.
When I used to hitch I would hitch across a dungeon and somehow teleport back to my group, which lead to me dragging all the mobs back with me, my group wouldn't even see me lag, it was strange. But really that was the only thing that made me cancel my sub.
Did the new patch increase performance for you? How well is the Anti-Hitching code working?

Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

Much much better but not gone for me.
But it's the 1st time since release I play VG without thinking about VG's technical issues
I "only" play VG and It's great !
Stopped DAOC, EQ2, SWG (lotro...) for Vanguard. Tried AOC but imo u can"t play AOC when you played VG before... So canceled my aoc's CE preorder and took another month for VG
Not saying it's totally gone, but it's lots better, like day and night.
Hitching is 100% gone for me, and I use to be known as the "Mad Hitcher"
So what exactly is , or was , hitching?
As I understand it, hitching is caused by the game loading info off of your hard drive when you chunk. Chunking is moving from one area on the map to another over invisible zone lines. I believe faster hard drives and having your hard drive defragged helps alot. On my lower end machine the game pauses slightly as I chunk, but is barely noticable on my higher end machine.
To me it is an extremely small price to pay for having a world without the traditional zones. If I see something no matter how far away I can travel to it. Makes the game world feel huge and wide open.
And no my toon doesn't teleport on either machine when this happens, just freezes for a second.
hitching is where the game stutters and your fps drops to 0 or the game starts to play like a slideshow. It used to do this pretty badly on any computer. A really bad time was like when you would go into a dungeon or leave a dungeon or when you were in a city esp when going inside or out of a building. This hitching was really severe and would last for 5-15 seconds in some cases only to reoccure as you moved 20 feet.
It was caused by loading graphic assets from disk to render objects which was why it was worse when going from one environment to another or moving in an environment with lots of objects. Specifically the big issue was texture maps which are the graphics the provide the surfaces of all objects. Not only did these need to be loaded but then they needed to be compiled on the fly before your graphics card could use them.
Since launch there has been an evolution. Starting with a small cache for compiled textures, then better cache managment which reduced reoccuring hitching in the same area. Then the latest patch now precompiles the texture maps which dramatically reduces the amount of data that needs to be loaded from disk and the work that needs to be done before it can be used.
As a comparison Age of Conan in beta had a problem with it's cache compiling and was super hitchy. They took the same approach as vanguard and now have the textures precompiled which virtually eliminates their hitching.

I'm going to be completely honest, I still hitch. Only for a second or two at a chunk line however.
Its not really worth mentioning anymore.
I haven't crossed a hitch in a dungeon since I've been back, but when crossing in the open my system lags a little bit. Just a few seconds and thats about it.
hitching is gone
The hitching is NOT gone for everyone. I just started playing 5 days ago and there is some minor hitching. I checked with people with much better specs then me and they are experiencing minor hitching as well. It doesnt make the game unplayable and its not that bad to be honest (doesnt stop my enjoyment so far), but it definetly needs to still be addressed further.

I don't wanna try Vanguard again until they re-do character models and animations. They look horrid to me
I've played just about all the MMOs that ever released in North America and I find the animations kick-ass. Rangers look like they are shooting bows, monks look like they are doing roundhouses and warriors swinging 2-handed weapons look like they are really swinging some big, heavy piece of metal around. I find the physics of the animations one of the best. For example, when a warrior swings his big, bad hammer, he doesn't hit and start another swing... the animation shows the swing has a followthrough before swinging again. It's a minor detail but one I notice every time I play any class. I do however play the game in very high quality so maybe that's the difference.
The character models could be redone, but I'd rather see devs work on something else. Player character models are only looked at for about an hour before you have your toon fully equipped in real gear and get out of the ugly starter clothes. And with a helmet/mask on, you can't even tell that a cat head was put on a human body or a fox head put on a human body.
