CoH with Crafting (an example)

Robin: Batman quick, the Joker's robbing Gotham Central Bank!

Batman: Not today, Boy Wonder. I have a full lst of tasks to do: When I finish with this tunic for Aunt Harriett, Alfred asked for a new pair of gloves, Commissioner Gordon wants a new hat & Barbara wants a new belt. Not to mention I am out of leather, so I'm going to have to go skin some cows - they usually hang out in Perez Park.

Robin: Holy Crafting System!

I agree I was thinking the same thing too..How will they fit it in if staying true to superhero life?

    mmmmmm.... cows... image

Jack Emmert said something about Reed Richards and Hank Pym in regards to a possible crafting system.  They bascially developed villain specific temporary devices which, for various reasons, became obsolete as soon as they were used.  They usually, in some form or other 'crafted' their own powers, but didn't craft any improvements to them, for various reasons.

I would imagine collecting clues could allow an Inventing Power Pool that could create temp powers against the villain in question...

    Warstrike... you can't be seroius...

Tons of heroes crafted things in their origins (or in some cases, had other people craft things for them in their origins) but how many continue crafting after they are an active hero? How many heroes grow in power based on how much downtime they have, or how many superscientists they know?

Crafting in and of itself is in comics... most comics crafting is already represented by writing your origin.  Crafting as instituted in other games has no place in superhero comics.  Iron Man doesn't spend all his time crafting new pieces of armor, much less for heroes who already have powers.  There's more important things to do other than twink.

RaddMonz probably knows this... you're out of line, pardner...

And I'm quite sure that the Silver Surfer doesn't need to smelt ore in order to rebuild his body. CoH is definitely not the typical MMORPG and, as such, widely expected features of today's MMORPGs cannot apply to CoH.

You flip to the first page of your comic book expecting to read about glorious action and adventure, but instead you see the phrases: "Batman attempts to create a grappling hook. Batman fails to create the grappling hook, but he loses no materials!"

Yep most heroes don't spend anytime crafting beyond crafting there intial powers or reloads for there powers. Also the game never promised to deliver crafting on the box. So all you people asking an bitching about crafting one question. Did you actually read the box or did you just assume that there would be crafting and other things because it was an MMORPG. People are complaining that CoH is missing quite a few things. But as far as I can tell it's not something that was promised at all.

However being able to craft temporary powers for use on certain villains etc. Would be pretty damn cool.

The Black Panther "crafted" the Fantasti-Car for the FF.  He also "crafted" the Falcon's wings.  Tony Stark "crafted" the WarMachine and Guardian armor.  Reed Richards "crafted" the costumes of just about EVERY Marvel Superhero- or at least the ones that use his "unstable molecule" design.  And that's not even mentioning Hank Pym, who crafted entire badguys.
There's just no sane way to argue against a crafting system by using comics as your logic.  The first post in this thread reads like an exercise in clueless irony- the guy uses BATMAN as an arguement against Crafting!   "Gee Boy Wonder, I guess we can't have these UTILITY BELTS, because RaddMonz thinks superheroes can't build things!"

    Warstrike - Peace Man!

I did the post as a bit of humor.

Some people take things so seriously.

And I am a huge comic fan, although I don't currently collect (I had to make the sacrifice some time ago in order to pay the bills).  I have approximately 60-70 comic book boxes filled with comics from the 60-90's.

That being said, I am not interested in having CoH implement a "traditional" crafting system. I wouldn't mind having the traditional super-hero secret identity (with all that entails/job/family/friends) that sometimes interferes with your hero duties.

    more on this after lunch...

    OK - lunch is over...

Now as I was saying...Secret Identities...

Something that is user/character customizable whereas you can choose how much or how little your alter ego interferes with your super-hero character:

Girfriend/Boyfriend/Spouse: from time to time your significant other wll call you (even during missions/battles) quite annoying & can get you killed

Family/Friends: Go meet uncle joe from tram station / stop at store & brink home milk (sort of fedex type of mission)

Work/School: Complete project for work/term paper for school in a specific amount of time (another type of fedex mission, maybe multi-part as far as gathering data)

Maybe a family member/loved one would get captured by a villainous group & you would have to rescue them.

Oh well, those are my thoughts (and a little rambling).

On a side note - being able to craft temporary powers (one time/one mission use) is a cool idea - Maybe as a new "inventor" power pool set.

In the high-fantasy setting of CoH an alter-ego would tend to be something non-fantastical (as described.) But the point of a game in the fantasy genre is to allow a player to escape his or her reality as conveniently as possible. While it is true that a comic book may reveal a superhero's identity, and such an identity is a part of the "world," it is probably best left in textual form. The beauty of CoH lies within it's simplicity, and I believe that adding secret identities to the game would ultimately be a step in the wrong direction as far as Cryptic's game design is concerned.

In any case, Cryptic should accept the fact that CoH is beyond the core development stage. I realize online games are continually updated (until they die, that is,) but fiddling around with game mechanics beyond a title's release has never proved (in my experience) to be fulfilling.

More villains, more powers, and greater rewards for their associated risks tends to be Cryptic's path for CoH. Of course this is all just my opinion... and the meek shall inherit the earth?
