My impression so far

Just thought I'd share my experiences of AoC with anyone who is interested but not yet bought the game.

I don't have any problems with bugs, other than crashing when I logout. Maybe a few quest glitches but mostly trivial stuff. Funcom is pretty quick with squashing bugs. My gripe is, I don't feel any community spirit, or get the feeling of a living world.

I've talked to hundreds of NPC's but haven't talked to a single player, other than a few words on OOC channel.  Ask how to claim my Drinking cape. Almost all chat is on OOC, and usually centered on bugs and boobs.  We'll its not a let down, but its not exactly what I had in mind.

I was under the spell of words like massive, brutal, blood pumping and epic. So far it's been sort of brutal. I did see some finishing moves, but as I'm an archer it was a boring one (person clutches chest and falls down) with complementary blood splash on screen. No idea about the epic or massive side yet. I can see how the combat can string together to make fluid combos. In PVP and PVE high level dungeons,  AoC's combat style will definitely shine. Button mashers will stand out like sore thumbs.

Overall its one of the best looking MMO's I've seen. Although it feels slightly sterile and empty. No talking, no buzz, no electricity. The content is so spread out over the levels, that sometimes you start to feel like they ran short of it. So far all I have done are quests. I heard I won't be able to do crafting till level 40, and then only pick 1 trade craft (correct me if I'm wrong). Which for me is a big part of the game. I prefer leveling skills and socializing meeting people, fighting in groups, etc. I play for fun, so I'm not rushing to lvl 80 for endgame .

I'll probably hang around for at least the  first free month. It's understandable that people will disagree with me.  Some love the game, others just have an emotional investment in this game. The long wait for release along with it's view of being an MMO "messiah" makes it hard to say anything even remotely critical. I think the mature rating keeps the kids out, but doesn't filter for jerks.

So, think whatever you want. I would encourage you to try the game out for yourself. It's definitely a good game. It just depends whether you like vanilla or chocolate.
