It really depends on what you want to do, there are many solid builds that can solo, and really almost any class can solo, it just depends on how difficult you want it to be. Easiest classes to solo, Paladin- great at low-mid level, Bard- challenging but can solo a lot of the content with patience, Cleric (preferably one that can melee when necissary) - can solo most content without much difficulty, Warforged Wizard - can solo fairly easy from low all the way to upper end quests once you realise you don;t have to kill everything in most quests.
one of the nice things about this game is that all the classes are useful and worth playing. For a starter experience I would recommend a fighter build (fighter, ranger, paladin, or barbarian) as you cant go wrong rushing in and killing things. watching the other players will give you an idea of how to play the other classes.
Since you are only playing for a few days a Ranger with your first level in Rogue would give you a nice feal for several different aspects of the game, Good ranged and melee fighter with enough skill points to scout/stealth effectively, and the ability to disable traps. Since you are mostly solo you won't need to max any stats.
Any Race. 1st level Rogue, All Ranger after that
STR 14, DEX 14, CON 14, INT 12, WIS 12, CHA 8
Put points into Disable Device, Open Lock, Spot, Search, Hide, Move Silently, Tumble (just because it's fun to do ), Balance, and maybe Jump. Rangers and Rogues have plenty of skill points and playing on solo/normal settings you won't have to max any of them.
This should give you a good overall feal of how DDO works during your trial period.
Gotta agree with HvyMetal - Warforged is a great solo race! You can't be poisoned, diseased, [almost] can't drown...the immunities really help, especially before you can find/buy/beg/borrow [can't steal] immunity gear. Multiclass the WF as a Wiz or Sorc and you can heal yourself - even with an Adamantium body, your failure rate is only 29% with a first level enhancement.
If you go "squishy", cleric is excellent for the healing as well as heavy armor use. My solo character is a Rog/Clr/Wiz, though you could probably do as well or better going just Rog/Clr. ALWAYS take the Rogue at 1st level because: 1. you get 2-3x as many skill points and 2. you can get to 2nd level to get the healing in 3 solo [and easy!] quests.
If you don't want to solo, create a group yourself and be sure to comment NEW or Just Starting or New Plr or something so that you can enjoy the quests and not just rush to completion.

I would recommend a paladin for a good solo class at low levels.
If you plan on playing longer than the 10-day trial, I would go with a WF Wiz as someone else suggested.
Now that the rest shrines reset on normal/solo difficulty, caster classes are great for solo'ing.
