Free trial? What free trial?

frestonfreston Member UncommonPosts: 503

Ok , so here its me , reading all the good reviews about DDO and thinking about giving a try to their so called "free trial". They ask me for my email, i give it to them (stupid of me), they send me a link to activate the account and download the game... and here comes the great surprise. The only way to download the game client is thru fileplanet, and you must create a paid account there to be able to access it. Ive readen the link a dozen times, and been fidgeting with the page, trying to find a mirror site or something. Nothing. If it exists, its so well hidden it doesnt really matter anyhow. IF you want to try this "free trial" you must create a paid account at fileplanet. Period. Bye bye DDO. You fool me once ,its your fault. You fool me twice, its mine. I really wanted to give this game a try before. I wont even touch it with a stick now.

Is this trial going through Codemasters or directly through Turbine?  Everyone in the western hemishphere uses Turbine directly whereas everyone else on this blue planet goes through Codemasters, from what I understand.

Can you please elaborate since you're leaving out key details to the shitty experiance you've having so far.  Most of the time these experiances turn out to be either the users fault or that they're having to go through Codemasters.

And, I thought Fileplanet has a freedownload service for trials although I had believed the bandwidth was capped unless you did in fact have an account with them.  Am I wrong?

Also, your post sounds extremely biased.  I'll refrain from trolling until you elaborate a little more.  :)

edit:  Ok, PLEASE explain why I can download the client through Fileplanet without a paid account. I think the OP is confused.

It went thru codemasters. I was also alarmed at not finding a free downloading mirro, and thought i must have been doing something wrong. If such mirror exists, i just cant find it. All the steps i took always led me to having to subscribe a fileplanet account. Ive donwnloaded lots of free trials of pay to play games and also free ones and ive never had something like this happen to me before. Thats why i was angry (i wrote the post immediately after the experience).

Are you downloading the USA version or the European one? I know i have had trouble with the european.

Incredible. Ive tried it myself both ways. If you download the version for the american region, you download directly from turbine and not have to pay. If you want to play in the european region, youre diverted to fileplanet and have to make an account. Perhaps you can lie when it first asks you which region are you from and download it directly from  turbine even if youre going to play from europe, but i have a strong feeling it wont work when you try to log in. If someone has done this very thing and had it working id appreciate them posting it, please.

I clicked on the european link (7 different download options) and it went to a page to download the client.

In all fairness, I think everyone having to go through Codemasters (anyone not in the western hemisphere) is getting griefed.  Each complaint made on these forums about the trial download is by someone who's specifically attempting to go through Codemasters.

Getting the download directly through Turbine (only availble to western hemisphere) is painless and trouble free.

Sorry but I'm at work right now and am unable to instigate the actual download.

I'd also advise that you make a nice constructive rant on the official DDO forums once you have your trial account issues resolved.  They need to hear this first hand.

Truth is im getting a little confused reading all the different troubles everyone is getting while downloading thru codemasters. Everyone has had problems, and not two of them the same. Could this be an X-file?
