So I was talking in Ventrilo just before a raid in WoW with a friend. Wouldn't it be nice if White Wolf released Vampires: The Masquerade as an MMO? I think so. I also think that this is a perfect time to flesh out some of the things I was speaking on referring to no experience gains but changing to something different for "Leveling" as we know of it today.
If any of you know, remember or understand from playing how siring works in the Vampires realm consider the following.
When you start playing you can start as any of the current Kindred Clans and if you wish as a Human. Instead of leveling you find yourself in a Clan from the start of the game. Nothing like a Guild system. BUT there would be like Clan Halls and things like that. It would be your quote n quote starting areas. These areas like Capital Cities in most games would introduce you to the Hierarchy of your Clan, have missions and or quests and instead of receiving experience points that simply move "up" everything would flow around the concept of say....faction. Some things you do make your clan happy...other things make them mad. Betraying your clan and choosing something different would always be an option. Feeding off the elders would carry the same consequences as within the world and theoretically would be HOW people could start playing and immediately bypass the leveling system and become extremely powerful from the start. However, feeding off the elders carried many horrific consequences that would all be played out in game.
Faction would be the driving force behind opening all abilities and skills. Based on your actions things would be open but they could be closed to you as well. If you are discovered betraying your clan you could be penalized faction and loose abilities and have to find other ways to receive those abilities again. Gain the favor of your Clan or even allow yourself to be sired by another Clan and then take upon yourself their racial traits and abilities. Get tired of being Mirovigian and gameplay seemed dull....go get sired by someone else. Tired of being human allow yourself to embrace the life of the Kindred.
NO one would ever have the same abilities exactly unless they followed the exact same paths...however because you can choose when and who to betray, when to increase and decrease your faction and therefore open or close abilities nothing is locked or set in stone. Allowing for wider arrays of races from the start instead of classes but functioning along the same lines as classes gives the feel that classes are indeed still there. Things could still be mathmatically tracked by asshats and the entire world would be at ease. Especially me....someone who is dying for a twist to things we have been doing forever...not to mention I am dying for a Kindred MMO.
Comments
CCP is working on a World of Darkness MMO. Ever since CCP and White Wolf merged, White Wolf has apparently been working on a EVE RPG and CCP is, in turn, working on a White Wolf MMO as can be easily seen by the job openings on their site (they are looking for all sorts of staff with knowledge of the World of Darkness).
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
Since the comments started coming I went and took a look at White Wolf's wesite and also at the Press Releases concerning the merge of CCP and White Wolf regarding the slated MMO World of Darkness. I noticed that "World of Darkness" expands the world in which Vampires takes place. Which is most unfortunate. The MAIN reason I state this is because, as we all know, the more kinds of characters you introduce into an MMO the less customization gets to take place.
I am sad to say, this may not be the MMO for me. They still have not said much so there is hope, I doubt they will release the game with every possible Clan for Vampires and simplify Vampires as a race to choose from others. If they DO seek to make it more in depth than that you just may see me in this MMO. Only time will tell.
I'd just Vampire, + Werewolf + Mage + Wraith + maybe something that has come out since I played them.
Each one of these is a complete game, but when combined (and they are designed to combine perfectly, and seamlessly) become a mega-game of incredible variety and fun.
All the clans and schools and breeds of each individual game are still present. You just have more variety. Not everyone is a vampire, or a mage, etc.
Personally, I'll be real interested to see what CCP does with this. It could end up being beyond awesome if done right.
My point was (to date) though people take a genre or even a specific setting within a genre even if they are taking a pen and paper RPG and produce it as an MMORPG many things are lost....I mean come on you cannot be ignorant enough to presume a Wish Spell should be included in DDO...amirite?
My point was more laced with concern that if they do indeed bring us a "World of Darkness" MMO within 4-5 yrs. as they intend...will it include the heavy customization the table top brought us? If not I dont think I will be interested. If they do HELLZ YEAH IM THERE.
I just really want to see developers deliver their full potential I remember days when we used to get a TV and by god that TV would last us 5-10 years easy...now things are so cheaply produced to meet the demand for NEW THINGS...some things get skimped on. There is no room for deniability here.
On that note. Props need to be extended to Mythic for postponing Warhammer regardless of the flack I will get for a comment like that from people that want to play it now...I want a damn good polished game OTHER than WOW. If anyone ever achieves a decent polished MMO out of box they have a decent chance to surpass the subscriber count for WOW. PERIOD. I understand the comments and concerns from the WoW Haters and Supporters alike so everyone can feel free to have a field day with my opinion, since until a few days ago I have kept my opinions to myself for about 3-5 years now as I have simply viewed this site.
