Howdy,

Im looking for some info here regarding this game. I got the 14 trial for the 2nd time, but this time I really gave it a shot. And I can say, that Im an idiot for not trying this game in the past more seriously. The game is very attractive and I love the skills concept.

However, I am uncertain of a few things,

-Firstly, If I pick military/soldier as starting, am I limited in regards to how far I can go into mining? What Im wondering is, if I play for 6 months as a attacking/soldier type and then get a change of heart and decide to become a full scale miner, can I do that OR do I have to create a new character and focus on mining?

I know the game is skill based, but Im not sure how "open" and free it is.

The reason I ask this is because I really cant make up my mind if I want to start as a miner or a soldier, but I dont want to "gimp" myself if I change my mind later. If I can pick up any skill later on, then this is not a problem, Ill just start a character and develop him as a feel at the moment.

Another thing, I do not know what race to pick. Amar, Caldari, Gallent or Minmar (sp?).

My issue with these races is, Im getting the feeling one is better at missiles, the other is better at armor defense, the other at shields, the other at drones... What if I pick a the race who is better at drones and decide I want to go full armor tanking with missiles and I dont want drones any more... can I do that? or am I gimped?

So my question is, how important are the races?

Also, can someone give me a detailed description of the pros and cons of all 4 races?

    Races are irrelevant.

You can skill _everything_, if you want. You just need the time. There are absolutely no restrictions.

If you want to chose a race and character, just make sure your attributes are balanced. Put a bit more on perception and a bit less on charisma, but overall have them balanced.
Your skilltraining depends on your attributes, with different skills demanding different attributes. As most people tend to skill in another direction from time to time, it is good to have the attributes balanced out.

Which race you want to fly should depend only on what you like. Amarr are super-cool, Minmatar too.
Just don't take Caldari, everyone is Caldari. You want to be something special, don't you? ;)

You can train whatever you want whenever you want to. What you trained before doesnt matter. So yes you can train to be a miner after youve trained combat for years no problem with that or the other way around.

All in all the race you pick as a start isnt that important. You get a couple of basic skills for that race (roughly a little less then a month or so in training time). But as with your first question you can skill whatever race you want whenever you want it .

The most important thing for you character are your attribute points cause they affect how fast you train skills. All in all you can say that for combat chars perception is the most important while charisma is the least important. The rest evens out. So if i were you id create a character with even attributes except low charisma (6 or 3) and a little higher perception then all the other attributes(2 or so more). With such a character you can also train a little bit of mining or industry if you want to try that out cause of the even attributes.

    Quick breakdown of the races:

-amarr: armor tanks, laser, bit of drones and missiles

    -gallente: armor tanks, blaster, drones

-minmatar: armor and shield tanks, autocannons a bit of missiles and drones (most skillpoint intensive race)

-caldari: shild tanks, missiles and rails (pve kings)

All races have good and bad ships. You can pvp with all of them and you can pve with all of them(though caldari are the best there).

Thats freaking awesome. For once, well for the second time in my life lol (first was SWG) I do not "have" to pick a starting "class". So Ill just make a character based on what looks better for once.

    I have another newbish question.

To make money (isk) as a total new player in this game, what is the best route to take, attacking missions or random mining (mine, dock, refine, sell, repeat)?

And regarding mining, am I doing the right thing to refine the ore then right click on it and sell it, OR should I be selling it in the market (auction) instead?

Whats the best way to earn some decent money in other words?

Regarding ships, how do I add stuff to my ship, like better guns and shields... what do I press to access that screen? Also, if I modify my starting ship and I die, will I lose all the mods I put on it?

Everything you just asked is covered in the tutorial. :)

(Do it. The whole tutorial. Get a coffee, get something to eat (enough to eat for 2-3 days, just to be sure, although you could eat during downtimes), and more supply of coffee).

If you need a quick cash-influx so you don't need to mine or something, write me an evemail.

if you are interested in mining, read this

    http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=434899

mining is pretty boring though, the missions are more intereting intially but get boring after a bit. You can do pretty well fairly quickly with missions, if you fully loot and salvage them. don't underestimate salvaging as a isk earner.

    gl, and welcome to eve.

Remember not to marry your first 1st lvl agent. I've seen many a newbie who's complaining that doing first level missions doesn't net them any cash, when they have the standing to move to lvl2's or even lvl3's (of course, level threes can be tricky if you don't have a battlecruiser).

Lvl2's can be done with a skilled frigate or a low-skilled cruiser, and pay around five to ten times what lvl1's do. There's also some variety in missions when doing them, and with the new Loyalty Point Store, you no longer need to worry about losing LP's when changing inside one corps agents.

qft, also the "connections" skill gets the standings up to level 2 agents pretty quickly.

Ok thanks for the replies, they are very insightful.

I have gotten into the game quite a bit and I currently really enjoy the game. Even though I tend to minimize the chat screen all together most of the time since isk spammers (like some say; its a "mini-game" in itslef to try and block them). However I do realise I will eventually have to find a corp to take the game to the next level.

But while Im still in the discovering phase of the game, I have some questions I need help with.

1- You said something about level 2 missions. How do I get them? You also said something about needed reputation or something to have access to them. Do I have to go somewhere to talk to them, OR do I have to buy level 2 agents? What the deal. (Please provide detail).

2- Doing missions, I have gathered all sorts of loot from the guys Ive killed. Whats the best way to sell them? I know I can right click on them and do Sell item, but I usually find I get very low offers like that. Can you give me some tips as to the best ways to sell loot in order to increase isk returns please?

3- In the fitting section, at the bottom of the screen it says; Upgrade Hardpoints. I was told to go to the market and look under ship upgrades or modification to find stuff for those slots. I looked and Im confused, I cannot find anything ACTUALLY, I dont know what to look for to begin with. What items go in those slots and where can I find them on the market. (Please give me exact things to click in order to find them).

Thats all for now, Im sure Ill have more questions soon. Hope you can help me out with these.

Um, you can detach particular chat channels from the 'main chat window' by clicking and dragging the channel name outside the window. You can put them back by dragging them back with shift pressed.

An advanced trick: Learn to keep 'Local' in a separate window. It doesn't matter if you can't see what's being said in it, as long as you see participant totals and names. These are the people in-system with you at the time. You can monitor the amount of people in the system and who they are through it easily.

This will be important when doing PVP, lowsec and 0.0 operations. Learn to do it early, and it'll keep you alive.

1- You said something about level 2 missions. How do I get them? You also said something about needed reputation or something to have access to them. Do I have to go somewhere to talk to them, OR do I have to buy level 2 agents? What the deal. (Please provide detail).

You need to find a level 2 agent. Every corporation has agents that offer missions, and, in some cases, services. All R&D agents offer research services, and some agents offer localization services (finding players).

To have access to an agent, you need to have positive standings towards the agents corporation, and the better standings you have, the better agents you can utilize.

To find your corporations 2nd level agents, click on People & Places, Search for the corporation, then open the info screen for the corporation. Go to 'Agents' tab, and you'll see all the corps agents sorted under 'divisions'. Divisions define what sort of missions the agent gives, either combat, courier, mining or trade missions. In general, security type division agents give combat missions, trade agents give trade & courier missions etc. There are some divisions that give a mix. I suggest going for the combat missions, they tend to pay a lot better.

Find the agent you want from those you have access to (the higher the level and better the quality, more money you get). Quality is important within an agents level, but if you can get a lvl2 -18q agent, it's still a lot better then a lvl1 +19q agent.

Then you need to go to the agents station, and get a mission. Try to find an agent that isn't in lowsec or just next door to a lowsec system, or be prepared to go to areas where PVP is common and that are dangerous.

As you get more standing towards the corporation (either through mission standing increases or Connections skill), switch to better quality agents, as the difference is huge, often two to three times the amount of reward money and loyalty points.

2- Doing missions, I have gathered all sorts of loot from the guys Ive killed. Whats the best way to sell them? I know I can right click on them and do Sell item, but I usually find I get very low offers like that. Selling to the obvious buyer is not always the best choice. The spyglass icon opens up market details for the item you're trying to sell, and it's usually worth your while to at least check what prices they're setting sell orders at the region. If you can read a graph, the detailed info gives you price range and volume of trade, which can be useful.

You can set up your sell order by clicking the 'advanced' tab in the 'sell item' dialog, after which you can enter the price you want and the time you're offering the item for. You have a limited amount of sell orders, and training trade skills will increase this amount (to absurdity, if you like).

In general, I try to sell the 'best named' items on the market on themselves, and basically melt the rest for minerals. However, that's because I don't want to bother to spend much time adjusting my sell orders.

These are 'rig slots', and stuff for them can be found in the market, but not on all stations (they are pricey and not always available).

When you are looking for something and can't seem to find it, it's often useful to either extend your scope from 'station' or 'system' to 'region' from the drop-down menu on the upper-left corner of the market window or to click the 'show unavailable' tickerbox at the lower-left corner of the market window. If you know the name or a part of the name, the 'search' function is your best friend.

Rigs are permanent upgrades to the ship, and require some skills to install. They are a new upgrade, and are made from salvaged parts of ships. You generally don't need to worry about them just yet, frigates aren't often set up with them because they cost so much and cannot be removed. In short, they are 'implants for ships'.

Just gonna throw this in..what each race uses in a general overall sense...might help you pick a race. These are just basic Generalizations! As said above you can cross race and you can train every skill no matter what path you pick right off the bat, I fly both Amarr and Galante races b/c my skills cross over for most everything.

    Amarr:

       1. Uses Lasers (EM / Therm Dmg for all)

a plus side of Amarr is that you dont have to carry much ammo and you can swap for long range and short range fights very fast

+Beam:  Long range to mid range, slow tracking

+Pulse: Mid to short range, Fast and good tracking

       2. Use of Drones, many Amarr ships have decent sized drone bays.

       3. Armor Tanks

       4. very skill intensive to be good with, but they are a very good race if you put in the time. ( not new player friendly)

    Galante:

       1.  Uses Drones (can vary dmg types with drone types)

          Hybrid Guns: (static dmg types)

+Blasters- Super close range high dmg guns, very  good tracking

+ Rails- Super Long range to mediumrange, slow tracking

       2. Armor Tanks

       3. Have great industry ships

       4. Great for PvP

       5. New Player Friendly

    Minmatar:

       1.   Uses Projectile Weapons. (can vary dmg types with Ammo)

+Autocannons: Super close range High dmg guns, fire fast and have extremely good tracking

+Artilery: Long range to mid range, Very High Damage on the larges, Poor tracking you need a lot of range for these

       2. Have ability to use Missiles and Drones on most ships

       3. Armor and Shield tanks, depends on the ship.

       4. Most all of their ships are fast.

       5. Great for PvP

    Caldari:

       1. Uses Missles

+relatively low skill train times to be good with.

+good for all dmg types and can fit for short and long range.

       2. Uses Hybrid Guns*.

+Blasters and Rails (* see above.)

          +Some ships have drone bays

       3. Shield Tanks

       4. Great for PvE

       5. New Player Friendly

Thats very informative. So far so good.

However, I have started rethinking my race over now. I picked Minmatar(sp?) because I went with the "they are fast" thing. I tried them out for about a week now and although I like it, I would of prefered to use lasers instead.

Originally I read somewhere someone saying that Amarr was just "meh" in pvp, because lasers weren't versatile enough. Well I dont think I understand. Why arent they versatile enough, is it because they cant switch their damage type in mid-battle or something (I dont know, just saying what I heard), or is it because they cannot jam others or cause they cannot do enough dps? What is it that makes them just "meh"?

The kind of thing I want to do is, I want to use lasers as main and missiles as secondary. Can I do that with Amarr?

Are they good for solo pvp/pve compare to Minmatar(sp?) and the others?

Whats the take on Amarr. I know I can cross over and learn anything I want, but for the sake of saving a little time, I need a little help deciding whether to go with Amarr or stick with Minmanar(sp?)

  • korvixkorvix Member Posts: 477

*warning wrote this after being up all night and im extreamly sleepy, so spelling and grammar mistakes are sure to ensue.*

With the low amount of SP you have invested in your character remaking prolly wont set you back to much, but if you really like your character you can always just train lasers and Amarr ships, all of the gun support skills you may or may not have trained will cross over.

Amarr are a little "meh" in the PvP department. Ill do my best to explain. Its partly because of the dmg types lasers deal EM and Thermal and partly they are skill intensive.  The main two points to why they are semi gimped in PvP b/c of their dmg type is  b/c, 1. The base resistance to all ships EM resistances is very high (minimatar ships even get a bonus to EM armor resistances+10%). 2. The Thermal Dmg isnt very high.

On the Skill Intesive part, you need a lot of skills to run a successful Amarr pilot. You need good skills in everything. Instead of doing a long essay on this ill just put it as you need very good support skills across the board.

You can read a bit about it Here: http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=533

CCP knows Amarr need some lovin and its on the boards to give them a little.

"The kind of thing I want to do is, I want to use lasers as main and missiles as secondary. Can I do that with Amarr?"

Well, not really on the same ship, a few of them have room for lasers and maybe 1-3 launchers. But, there are 2 Developers for Tech 2 Amarr ships: Carthum Conglomerate and Khanid Innovation. One uses lasers the other missiles.

Carthum ships will use lasers and will have Gold and Red themes.

    Copy paste from the game:

    "Developer: Carthum Conglomerate

Carthum ships are the very embodiment of the Amarrian warfare philosophy. Possessing sturdy armor and advanced weapons systems, they provide a nice mix of offense and defense. On the other hand, their electronics and shield systems tend to be rather limited."

Khanid ships will use some type of missle system and be Dark in color (mostly black) and have blueish ambient lights.

    Copy Paste from the game:

    "Developer: Khanid Innovations

In addition to robust electronics systems, the Khanid Kingdom's ships possess advanced armor alloys capable of withstanding a great deal of punishment. Generally eschewing the use of turrets, they tend to gear their vessels more towards close-range missile combat."

(both quotes from the Command ship info)

"Are they good for solo pvp/pve compare to Minmatar(sp?) and the others?"

Most PvP in EvE is not solo, but on the rare accasion you get some solo action Minmatar will mostly be better. On the PvE side, all races can PvE effectively.

For me...I like Amarr the best, its a combination of the lore, the ships, their weapons (cant have space ships without lasers...right? pew pew) and that they get awesome Helmets. Im not a min/maxer so I can deal with being a little gimped but it really isnt that bad or game breaking.

If you would like to look at all of the ships and get a feel for what you will be flying check out http://glowfalls.com/eve_ships/index.php they have a screen for most every ship in the game except for a few faction ships.

    Hope that helped, fly safe!

Amarr are not as bad as people tend to make them.
They write endless posts on the forums about how bad the amarr are, and ignore the recent boosts.

Amarr have the benefit of high tracking and relatively high range with closerange weapons. Plus, they benefit from a very high raw damage.
They deal only Em and Thermal, but armortanks often even have a hole on Em damage, as few people play amarr and it's not useful to tank Em specifically.

From my experience, Amarr need some boosts here and there, but have, even in their current state, very nice ships.
Whoever felt the raw pain an Abaddon with pulse lasers can dish out knows what I'm talking about. Lasers hurt. They hurt really bad. They don't even have to come close like Gankmegathrons with neutron blasters have to, they can easily shoot you from over 40km+.
I made an alt some time ago. He is amarr. And i love his lazers (pew pew). Plus, he can fly the awesome Guradian logistic ship, which is a great ship for keeping your fleet alive.
By the way, their recons are great too. They can empty the capacitor of most hacs in one cycle. Battlecruisers take two cycles, battleships a little more.

    Amarr for the win. :)
