Entropia Universe

Has anyone tried this game?  I generally try and stay away from the forums on this site because... well, everyone here hates every single MMO ever made except preCU SWG so it's mostly just a sea of absurd criticism but I really don't know where else to go so I throw myself at your mercy here.

I'm a preCU SWG vet myself currently in TR and while I like the game I just hate being led around by the nose with such linear gameplay.  Just the constant, "I'm level XX so I need to go to map Y," is lame.  I value virtual freedom.

I've read a lot about this game and many player reviews.  I understand that is uses a real cash economy with a fixed exchange rate and some guy named "Neverdie" owns a mall that nets him $20,000.00 per month in real cash.  Now, I don't care about making money.  At all.  I just want a sandbox with all of the freedom that entails where I can just go and do what I want like hunt down the robots ingame hellbent on killing all humans and come back and still have every facet of a virtual space available to me like socializing, shopping, et cetera.  Making money off the game doesn't concern me at all.  All MMOs are a losing proposition, fiscally speaking, anyways so just because this one has the opportunity to reverse doesn't mean that I'll take advantage of it or even care at all.

I did notice that this year the game will be upgrading to the Crysis engine which will be absolutely gorgeous.  I didn't even think the graphics were particularly bad right now.  Screenshots look pretty good IMO.

So what are/is everyone's thoughts on this game?  Who tried it?  I understand that this is a game you either "get" or you don't and that's obvious from the player reviews.

This game just comes off as Raph Koster's wet dream and I'm all about that.  I'd just like some input before I drop fifty bucks on the initial ingame currency investment and start plunking down 10-20 per month afterwards.  And yes, I visited the Entropia Forums site and read up on stuff there.

The world itself is absolutely massive, literally taking hours to run from east to west or north to south on each continent and there's a few. You could literally go out somewhere and not see another soul for days if you decided to go that route. But as you go you find teleporters that allow faster travel. Even then though the distance sometimes between teleporters is immense

There are 3 "paths" in EU. First is the adventure aspect, you go out kill monsters all over the various continents.

The next is mining whether for ores or essence (I think thats what it was called, been awhile)

The final aspect of the game is crafting. You can make everything from clothing to weapons or even spaceships.

You start out as a new arrival to the world, with just a basic orange jumpsuit. You have no cash,no weapons, no nothing. You have to put RL cash into the game in able to buy even the most basic starter items. Or you can gather essence from some monsters that are 45 min away. Each sells for about 1 cent.

If you do plan on staying in this game for awhile you will need to put cash in or get REALLY REALLY lucky when out killing/mining/crafting. The game is made to pull as much money out of your wallet as possible while giving minimal returns. Everything you do in this game costs credits, which you purchase with real money. You need to pay for your weapons, armor, ammo, med kits etc etc. And as you get "better" you need better of each to go into the better places. Even as say a miner you will need armor and weapons to fend off the native wildlife. Also as you use your items they degrade and need to be repaired. Also other players sell their wares on auction. A good suit of armor can literally cost over 500 bucks per piece, with there being arms, legs, head, chest, hands, boots, shins etc pieces.

If you are an "A" type personality and want to find the best,be the best etc this game will cost you a fortune. Some folks put just 20 bucks a month into the game other's put thousands. I am an "A" type gamer and put way to much cash into the game and decided I'd better leave before it got worse.

i really liked this game, but if you play it make sure to buy lower grade weapons first, dont buy the big shiny rifle that takes like 32 ammo per shot I did that and with low skills youwaste a lot of ammo, but you do look sick.

All I can say is... holy shit, this is the best MMO I've ever played.  I don't even know where to begin.  Seriously everyone, if you liked preCU SWG this is the game for you.  It makes preCU look like the most linear game ever made.  I love it.  I already know I'm going to be playing this game for the next five years and the best part is that in a few months they're switching to the CryTek engine which means this will basically the prettiest MMO ever made.

    Wow.

Why did this thread get swept into the Entropia Universe forum?  A forum which doesn't even have a link under the "Released Games" category.  WTF?
