This game looks freakin' sweet, i've always liked space MMORPGs, but the only ones i've played are way too simple (star sonata), or way too complex (EVE), i want to see how this one turns out to be.
downloading it now i hope the ingame is in english
As far as i've seen, the game is a very good middle ground (not too simple, not too complex), too bad that for now the majority of the playerbase is brazilian , and i'm not very fluent in portuguese, we need more english speaking players!
EDIT: And yes, the in-game is in english.
I managed to install & patch but whenever I log in I get a long pause and a contection failed message. I have checked my firewall settings and stuff.. problem is the forums are all in portuguese
Don't worry about it tho, it happened to me too for a while, the servers went offline for a while i guess, but now i'ts back up and running!.
And yeah, they should really make an english forum :S. The english in-game is enough for me for now.
The game starts out a little slow, but once you get your gatling gun from a quest it's a blast
I just created an account! is there any english guide on the forums or anywhere else that tells of the game's controls or what the game play is even about?
EDIT: Just found an English Wikipedia of the game.

There's an english in-game tutorial that basically explains everything, and the gameplay is pretty much the same as any spaceship MMO out there.
Well I downloaded, installed, and registered. Whenever I type in my username and pass, and press enter, it loads a black screen with my mouse pointer frozen for minutes on end and I'm convinced its frozen. Anyone know whats going on?

I sadly cannot tell you. I only know that I had your same problem, but the next day it worked for me. It ended up the servers being down. I have already un-installed Taikodom.
Blessings,

Well its odd because on the main site it says that their server is online. So I will just wait one more day and if I still cannot log in tomorrow I will just have to give up on this one. Too bad, I wanted to give the beta a chance and review it.

Hi,
Taikodom has a IRC suporte:
http://www.taikodom.com/irclient/taikodom/
Any loggin problem, try to speak with a GM in the IRC chat, GMs have a @ in the name like @Random and @Nik. Server is online from 12:00 to 24:00 (-2 GMT) hour. Game are running smooth now with some server crashs during the day. This link leads to the english site:

There are many english speakers palyers around the game now. If you get in the game use [ /g ] comand to speak in global chat so you can find other inglesh speakers players. There is a bug tha may happen when jump by a gate, your game will frozen or let you stucked, just restart the game to solve the problem. A big new build are coming in 14 january that will solve (we believe) most of thjose bugs and server hangs
Other online players can help with further problems.

Well, there is a good reason for this (and also for my return). I have been working on a Space Sim MMO with IBM support for the past 2 years (the project has been going on a little longer) and we are finally approaching Gold stage.
So, why not let the people of the largest wc community hear from it?
The game's name is Taikodom and the story runs around the mysterious "Restriction" of the Earth, when an energy shield of unknown origin prevented anyone from going into Earth and set off a deadly plague that killed billions. Survivors were sent to space, where humans already lived, in cryogenic statis. Now, 150 years later, these resurrects are been brought back to fight for the Consortium, a newly-born corporate-oriented space community struggling against piracy, renegades and fanatics. Can Humanity survive long enough to return to Earth once again?

The game is currently under development. We got a "Live Beta" stage going on, where people may register to play the current version of the game. A new version is coming out tomorrow with some addons.
For now, you can go thru 100+ missions, travel thru Sol, Proxima Centauri and Barnard. Tomorow Ross 154 opens up too.
You can create corporations, upgrade your ships, etc. New updates come out each 6 weeks, usually implementing new missions, new space game and lots of new features.
Here are some screenshots

I hope Ill see you guys in space!

I hope the HW2 comment was a good one
Art Department does an excellent job in giving form to what nodes (as we call specific parts of space) I describe them. They somehow manage to amaze us at each new release.
The interface is both mouse+keyboard as joystick+keyboard. They were going for a mouse+key idea, but the WC die-hard fans in the team (that includes the CEO and me ) asked for a joystick interface.
Now a little more about Taikodom. You probably saw on the website that the first phase, the space sim to be released next semester, is just a part of the whole project. There are already an ongoing graphic novel series and several short tales (Im not sure if they are all available in english yet), plus some novels we are working on. Considering one of our biggest supporters (IBM), english release shouldn't take too long. (The game is been developed in portuguese and english simultaneously).
Players are resurrects, brought back from 150 years of statis to help stabilize the Consortium. There are no nations, but large corporations, not many different from the japanese concept of zaibatsu. And the players themselves may join or create their corporations as the game progresses.
Twice during test phase player corps have created events that cause players themselves to react. First a mining cartel that tried to close up one mining belt and currently a pirate clan who caused the foundation of two security corps. All these events are been monitored and in both cases were integrated into the game universe story as we found it interesting. Yes, player-made events do impact in the game world, especially at this moment of development and testing.
At the moment there are several missions to be played, both part of the main plot of the game and secondary plots. What you got currently in this version of the test are simple and straight forward missions. A more robust mission system, with various objetives, group objetives and a tree structure comes in early 2008.
What will be on for release next semester? Several single-player missions, group missions and corporate missions, plus long-range expeditions that leads a squadron through a series of hard-core missions.
There will be player-created and managed corporations, with corp crests, alliances, fiances and a few surprises that takes some steps into the tactical and strategical gameplay.
An intriguing storyline with twists and bumps, developed by two science fiction writers (one of them a big space sim fan, erm, hello ).
No levels! No skill-based system! Its a Space Sim after all! Though there is progression not simply based on economics.
Factions and aligments that allows players and corps to pick sides, form their strategies and battle for their little piece of the Territory and the Consortium expands away from the Core.
Trade routes. The new colony station in Vega needs supplies and components and Horus Orbitats at Uranus produces them. Ceres is one of the largest mining areas of the Solar System and Behemoth Factories needs proccessed metals. What other routes exist out there? You may find out on your own.
Mining and crafting. While today mining is just hunting for asteroids (literally shooting at them), as the game goes Gold we will have specific mining equipment and the right place to look for some elements. These elements can be refined and manufactures up to the largest ships.
And more... Im talking too much already
and on a final word that says it all,
Bah!
Sorry for going stealth mode, but I had some planning to do for the next version.
Ok, first about not been able to run the game. When it simply goes black when you try to run the games, its most probably the 3D card software. Just download and run an update from your card's manufacturer and it should fix the problem. We had someone yesterday complaining about that just to find out his 3D card software was dated january 2004.
If thats not the problem or that doesnt fix it, you can ask for our support at http://portal.taikodom.com/?locale=en
On shooting asteroids for a living, believe me that is not what we want, but its what is necessary for the moment. Why? Because several features (like fluctuating economy, progression and dynamic content) has not been implemented yet. The way it works (shooting and "looting" them) is also temporary, as the rules for mining equipment enters soon (also related with progression and dynamic content). Does that means that its yet to be done? No. It means that, since it depends on other features, it was pushed back on the implementation timetable. There are rules, there are some features, but including it now would "break" other features.
There will be PVP areas? The plan is for the other way around. That means, some areas are totally secured, like city centers. Some are patrolled by NPC ships (there is a little of that now, but due to other features, they don't react to piracy, just in self defense or when someone branded "enemy" shows up) and there are unsafe areas, where piracy is high and you better hire some escort to do your trading. Effectively, the farther you get from "civilization", more dangerous it gets. Plays can expand this "area of protection" as they want.
As always, remember the game is under development, so new features will appear and some today are just place-holders (like firing at asteroids). As Edmo said, Hoplon has gone a long way to get here. As you might know, Brazil doesnt have a game development background, both as know-how as a cultural thing. Believe me, people here still consider it hard to understand that you actually work on the game industry and that it is a serious business.
There is also a serious lack of trained and experienced people in Brazil, even though we got some of the most talented people available. Which is why the company took a few years of learning before it got where it is now. Is that an excuse? Not at all. We wouldn't be here if we didn't believe we can deliver an excellent AAA game. But its a little background for those of you used a gaming industries of 30+ years
And an addendum to what Loaf just posted, recording VA is just the tip of the iceberg. First that it demands actors for it, which means money. Second, it means a larger game file, which means larger downloads (especially at updates). Third, recording it without the proper equipment is not good enough for a commercial release (believe me, I have worked with online learning for years). Fourth, it means multilingual, as the game will be not just English, but Portuguese and later as many languages as necessary (spanish and mandarin are already been studied), so 3+ recordings, files sizes, etc.
After all that, it means implementing the feature.
Does it means no voice at all? Not necessarily. But its what we got at this moment.
and on a final word that says it all,
Bah!
After updating my drivers, I still have the logon problem. I contacted a member from the IRC who e-mailed me the reason why its happening. There seems to be a problem with ATI Graphic card users and the game. I am still waiting on a response for when this will be resolved though. Peace!

To the OP thanks for the heads up this is a nice find.
Thanks.
Theres much to be done in this game. I dont know if it should be called open beta, I guess it's in development (but open for everyone). It seems there will be a wipe next month and new updates, so they'll gonna prepare the game for commercial launch.
BTW, its a brazilian game, but there is an american GM ( or more than 1, IDK). He may be found in the irc channel: http://www.taikodom.com/irclient/taikodom/
Ive tested this game.
Gameplay is cluncky. Very limited content and the population is like 50-200 players on weekends.
In fact, the game is in development. They are adding new stuff all the time. IT seems a big update will happen march 3rd, and then the "real" open beta comes.
