in my opinion i think is just what this game needs and hope that they look in to making the max level higher in a future free or paid expansion. i hope that eventually they have the level set at over 200 so some die hard fans will be able to be in the same league as the witch king
just wondering what other people think about this idea?

From the Dev chat last night I did not get the impression that there will be a level increase anytime soon. There will be more content added of course, but it sounded like they'd like to get some more lateral movement within the game rather than strictly vertical. That was how it came across to me anyway. Perhaps others will have differing opinions.
I think that what should be added to an MMO is more high end levels instead, and a way to customize your character further, from when you reach the maximum level. This adds more content, and progression, without out-dating previous content, or lengthening the grind.
For example: If, instead of increasing the level cap, they just added in more of the world, and expanded the map, but with all of the new areas being top level zones from which you could PvP, do instanced dungeons, etc to further progress your character without doing too much to make him more powerful. I believe the kids are calling it Horizontal Progression nowadays.
I agree with dragonace. There is a LOT of room for expanding the content of the game without raising the level cap. I believe we have only seen the beginnning of what LOTRO has to offer.

He posted that before I could, copy-cat! (dragonace not the op) since Im editing I'll add another
The only thing that will make me stay with LOTRO is level cap increase. Motivation to get some silly reputation or farm the same raid for better equip is just not strong enough for keep me playing. The only motivation for me is to learn new abilities and increase in level.
REALITY CHECK
One might ask themselves, why is increasing levels or learning new abilities really an incentive to keep playing, seems to be just as pointless as earning faction reputation or better gear.
You've hit the nail on the head about level based games though..... if you don't let players keep increasing ever upwards...there is no end game to speak of worth playing....
Will be interesting to see where Turbine decides to take the games development.

Always the crying for a level cap increase. Whenever a game has a level cap increase then all the crying begins that now all the "high level gear acquired" or the "raid dungeons that existed before the increase" are "useless now" or "I can't believe I spent all that time and now they made it seem like a waste of time".
I think a lot of people playing MMO's don't know how to play them. It's not a race to the end in an MMO...its a game to immerse yourself, make some friends and enjoy what the MMO world has to offer. Is your real life so boring that you have to race to the end of every and any MMO that comes out and then whine when you get there?
What are you doing in reality where there is no level cap increase? When ("IF") you turn your face away from the monitor reality is really going to smack you hard.
And who are you to tell people how to play there games? I am not saying raise the cap but its stupid for someone to tell another how to play a game to enjoy it. Everyone plays a game diffrently depending on how they enjoy it. Your way does not make it the right way or the only way. Get off your highhorse and open up your mind alittle. You want to talk about reality, the reality is what is fun for you is NOT fun for another.
You're right, what is fun for me probably isn't fun for another. But then again I don't Troll around to every forum and whine about how this game or that game is not fun anymore. And unless company A does this or company B does that it just won't be fun for me.
I play a game...if I don't find it fun anymore then I leave it, I don't go out and whine about it. But as I said, you are right I don't burn my way to the highest level in a game and then burn out on it. That's not my style, maybe that's fun for others. But it seems like that is why a lot of people grow disenchanted with a game...they burn out on it.
If that's your style and its fun for you then fine...just don't whine about it when the burn-out hits.
How long would a level cap increase keep someone that doesn't like the end game entertained? And by this I mean someone that doesn't care about the fact that it's being constantly expanded, someone that must have more levels or they are leaving.
What would ten more levels give them? A month? Two? If that's what you need to stick around, either find a game with an end game you enjoy more (DAoC?), or that has some rediculously high level cap (Anarchy online has a level cap of 200 I believe).
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

I am not one of those people and never will be ones to race to the end. but i would want to be able to reach a hire level than fifty which in the lotr world is peanuts to the main hero's. but i think it is very hard if they want to keep close to the lore to let people become very powerful. but in the books gandalf does mention in the hobbit that they need a sneak(bilbo) to steal from the dragon because all the hero's are all off fighting one another. and if there are these un heard of hero's that can kill a great worm like smaug well then im pretty sure their character would be a bit higher then level 50 lol. plus if they did increase the level cap. they could make quests that only people who have been playing literally for years could be strong enough to be done and then they could become a lord of their race. and they do mention quite a few elven lords that could in one part scared away 5 nazgul. which again would be a lot more then level 50. but since this is the lotr i think a neat way to create players more powerful and still be true to lore and no pointless grinding. is artifacts there are so many lost rings of power and many other artifacts like swords and amulets they could have these which would take many quests to find and much much much money to aquire these items and could greatly increase a players power and add more content and more lore and stay true to the lore too
I imagine Turbine will raise the cap at some point, though probably not in the near term. I'm personally satisfied with the free Book updates we've gotten so far. While I'm not really into raiding (I really don't have the time), I appreciate all the other content they're adding besides the raids. I feel like each update has created a very ballenced addtion to the game and has had something for everybody.
Check out my LOTRO Blog: www.middleearthadventurer.blogspot.com
I hope they don't raise the cap itself. I would rather have 50 new level 50 areas to play and explore in then only a handful of areas at 60. This will make the game feel big and make it always feel as if you have choices in regards to where you will play.

Incresing lvl cap isnt good solution. So you hit new lvl cap and what then?? Another thread of increasing lvl cap again?? How far up does it really have to go?
Just make lots of new areas, increase crafting possibilities, enhance pvp, new traits and maybe add few instances to players who want them. They can do so much more with their system, doesnt have to follow always your typical lvl based fantasy game (EQ, WOW) They should do more with their Trait system also. Lots of more options available and make players more think what to get.
Just add those things and maybe ill be considering coming back.
Played: Quite a few Mmos

I think that the way the game is going is great. The trait system sets itself up perfectly for horizontal improvement. Long, epic quests in zones tailored to level 50 play could reward you with legendary (or some new higher tier) traits you can slot to improve or just totally change your character.
As long as they keep pumping in interesting content it will turn into what zone/raid progression was in EQ1s prime. Instead of leveling into the next zone you have to gear/trait into it; this allows less content to go to waste and allows people to group with their lower-level friends more regularly.
I too now want 'horizantal leveling' instead i think gear could be a huge part of this since this is lord of the rings and there were thousands of artifacts of absolute power. i have always hoped for a reknown system similar to fable's where you get better popularity titles (unknown, unsung, known, well known, famous, very famous, legendary) these could give you knew skills that would make your enemy's afraid of you and give yourself more confidence.
It's been quite awhile ago, but I remember discussing the idea of weapons or armor in LoTRo that you could "level" along with your character. Kinda like how the named weapons in The Hobbit and Fellowship books struck fear into the goblins, wolves, and orcs.
I don't propose us being able to find or acquire the actual legendary weapons mentioned in the books, but something along the same lines would make for some interesting choices.
For example, let's say that your weapons kept track of how many goblins or orcs it had defeated over it's life-span. When it got to a certain number, it gained a new title; which then made it more feared by the evil denizens of middle earth. This "fear" or "renown" could be represented with random beneficial bonuses for the owner of said weapon or for his fellowship as well.
The idea behind this is to make us really think when we have the option of "upgrading" our weapon. Do we switch to a new weapon that doesn't have any history or "renown" attached to it yet? Or, do we keep our old trusty weapon that is starting to get some nice bonuses attached to it because of it's "renown" level; even though it might not do as much DPS as the new weapon.
This way players that want more choices than just looking for the best DPS will be able to reap the benefits of keeping a weapon for many, many levels, rather than switching out every other level or so.

That is a really cool idea. You should post it in the suggestion forum.
Speaking of horizontal upgrading, have you really started in on your virtue grinds yet? I just got going on those on my main. I didn't pay much attention to them when I was leveling up, but now that my gear is getting close to maxed I can see that the last little 10% that gets my key stats over 400 is going to come from them. I'm currently aiming to pick up around 40 agility from virtues (along with whatever other stats come with the three I'm grinding), and I think it's going to take ages . . . .

Definately think that is a great idea and one that should be suggested for the game. I would think that this could/should only be applied to higher end crafted weapons. Maybe starting at level 35 you can start to use these crafted weapons that grow with you. I believe I heard they are working on a system that allows you to put the stats of one armor onto another allowing you to keep the skin instead of changing armors. I think this could be applied to weapons as well.
The weapons could start off as normal then as mentioned keep track of the types of kills and branch of traits from that. Like level 1 = +10% Dmg vs X (X being what you have killed the most of at Y number of uses) Level 10 = +15% Dmg +5% Chance of Fear vs X, Level 15 (maxed @ level 50 character) +33% Dmg + 10% Fear vs X. Thinking as I go here...the weapon could be treated as a pet. The weapon would bind on equip and be able to name it" Then you could get a title such as Winterfell - Wielder of Ice.
Anyways...very cool idea!

Thanks all. I'll post the idea in the suggestion area of LoTRo's forums. This is just one small idea of what developers could do to provide additional content without increasing the max level. I'd be fine with them increasing the level eventually (maybe in another 1-2 years).
By holding off on the level increase it allows for much more diverse content besides the usual level-grind that we see too often in MMOs. I'm really hoping that Turbine tries a different road in that aspect.
Who the hell are you, and why should I care?
Congrats! You are a victim of Trollstar!
While I am sure there are gamers who would like an ungodly high level cap; there are also a number of gamers who prefer to have other activities to do besides level your main character.
Turbine did hint at raising the level cap a month or few ago in a dev chat, but said it would likely come the usual way, ie. retail expansion. So until they announce that, I wouldn't concern myself about it.
All in all, what does it matter? It's just a number over your head. I'd rather give more abilities, skills, armors, weapons, etc. to personalize our characters and differentiate them from everyone else. All a level cap increase does is invalidate previous content (which is a huge flaw in levels-based games anyway). So you increase the number over your head by 10. You're in "harder" zones but you're getting gear to equalize it, so in the end the combat is identical in difficulty and duration. Sure, you can go back to lower (now invalid to you) content and open a can of whoop-ass on mobs and bosses who gave you a hard time before, but that's only fun once.
50 is fine, it's just a number. Give me more actual content to play through.
