"There were many paths that led up into those mountains... most of the paths were cheats and deceptions... most of the passes were infested by evil things and dreadful dangers."
- The HobbitTM
It wouldn't be possible to have a Middle-earth without mountains. Mountains of the mountainous variety, so big that if you're way up there on the top you might not be able to see the ground because it's lost in the fog somewhere. These aren't just little gamey walls to keep you nicely fenced in. These are giant chunks of the landscape that loom up and mock you with labyrinthine paths infested with things that aren't too pleased to be sharing the path with you. You can't walk up the sheer walls of these things. There are paths, but they're narrow and they don't come with guardrails. If you fall off of one of these suckers, the trolls are going to scrape up your corpse with a spatula.
Yes, the Middle-earth of Middle-Earth OnlineTM will have mountains. Let's take a look at how they're made!
In the game engine the ground of middle-earth is made up of a grid. There is a point on the grid every five meters, and those points can be moved up and down. A hill is made by raising a lot of points; a lake is made by lowering a lot of points and throwing in a plane of water. Viola.

"There were much of the beautiful, much of the wanton, much of the bizarre, something of the terrible, and not a little of that which might have excited disgust."
