Is this game really full of weirdo's and seedy people?

in Second Life
was told about this game and how good it was then on the australian new there was a thing about how dodgy this game is, full of petafiles etc,and most pr the people playing it were into weird stuff. is it really that bad or is it actually any good?

It's like any other social game online. It has it's goods and the bads. You'll find as many sex craved pedo's as any other social game. It's fun for awhile, you can meet a few decent people. But as a game to play seriously? It's best to spend your money on a real game rather than a virtual house to have a pretend life in.
In the end it's fun for a little bit. But not something you'd want to play seriously.

Linden Lab leads the way, and other developers follow. Sooner or later the competition will offer something bigger and "better", but do not expect to see fast paced FPS shooters inside a virtual world just yet, that plays as well as BF2, FarCry e.t.c. It won't happen in many years still. SONY's "Home" is a step in the right direction, but you can't really build anything in it. You can put up already made furniture, whereas in SL you can make every bit of it yourself, including textures, animations and scripts. Besides, only in SL can you make a 200m tall penis and flash it in public places. Sigh.
Other than SL, I spend some time with Silkroad Online, which is really the only game I play these days (started less than a week ago, before that I had not played anything in a while), Falcon 4.0 Allied Force and Microsoft Flightsimulator X. The community that makes SL are mostly intelligent and mature people. In SL, I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the brightest minds that I have ever chatted with since I started using Internet in the mid-90's, but there are of course the usual a-holes as well. Griefers, spammers, scammers, landflippers e.t.c. It is just impossible to avoid it alltogether unless you move to another planet all by yourself.
I only wrote this becuse I was bored and "my" SRO server is down for maintenance. I am not a SL addict. It's been a couple of days since I logged in, and that is one of the things I like about it.. no addiction for me. MMORPG games are far worse.. they get me hooked in no time. But with SL I do much of the work outside of it (Photoshop, 3D Studio Max e.t.c.), with no real need to be logged in all the time.
Okay I'm done :P And sorry if I was harsh, didn't mean to.
I reallly don't think that many mmorpg.com people are there.
I typically make enough from commisions to pay for other MMO subscriptions if I choose to.
the game has plenty of messed up people, then it has lots of drama. the latter got in the way of my making stuff so I log in a couple times a week to say hi and maybe setup a script or two.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I've never posted here on the MMORPG.com forums before but this thread is such a good question I didn't really think I had a choice.
First off I would like to say I was kind of suprised to see this "game" even ranked here on this site. A lot of SL fanboys will yell at you if you dare to call SL a game and this is exactly the way Linden Labs wants it. They sell SL as being an actual "life" and will try to crush the idea that its a game of any kind. I can't believe they didn't try to sue someone over their product being posted here with all these other games.
Secondly, to anwser your question, YES. The game is full of weirdos and perverts. Some of the most perverted things I've ever seen were seen in this game. Pretty much any weird sub-culture you can name will have their own island (or even an entire continent) located somewhere in this game where you will see images of whatever bizzare fetish they enjoy plastered all over every billboard, wall and person in the area. For the most part you won't have to see too much of this unless you make the mistake of going looking for it. But even in the newbie welcome areas there is the occasional troll who will take off whatever skimpy outfit they were wearing to ask you how much you like their virtual penis.
To be honest though, I think how much enjoyment you can derive from this "game" is all about attitude. If you go into the game looking for some kind of meaningful experience you will come away from it dissapointed. On the other hand, if you go into the game to laugh at all the bizzare things the weirdos are doing then I think you will be pleased with the outcome.
Just try not to spend any real world money on this thing. Or atleast set a reasonable limit for yourself, like $20 once and then never again.

The difference is: SL is mainly for Adults. If you're not over 18, you dont belong there. They have a Teen version for the minors (minus the dumb sex stuff and anything 'not for children').
I've been playing SL for 2 yrs now. My lil' shop makes enough to pay for the land and uploads plus a lil' extra. All legally.
I've also been playing "Tales of Pirates". The most annoying thing are the 'world' broadcast messages for Gold, account, or cheat sellers. All of which are scams. Inside every town are hundreds of people selling crap for high prices that I can get for FREE just by playing the game & finishing quests.
That seems to be the norm for MMO's. Someone spends countless wasted hours building stuff just to sell it to you or some other desperate player. In the end, they get their gold.
The difference there is, in Second Life your time & effort are legal to cash out.
Speaking of "Weirdos"- in Tales of Pirates, I had someone ask me, in really broken English, to join them in a Party. I declined. Well, they proceed to follow me around asking me to join their party. I declined politely 2 or 3 more times. Then they try to trade with me. Ummmmm.... WTF DUDE!!! Nothing more annoying than a MMO Stalker!
There are seedy people in all worlds the pedophile stuff was the germans reacting to a roleplaying subset called ageplay who dressed up as kid as some of them were having sex dressed as kids but the majority of them were not. The germans investigated people and invaded their privacy in doing so. Aside from that you do have all sorts of things that you may not see people partaking of in the real world as people explore who they are a bit more in SL. There are seedy people anywhere you go and weirdos.
Also are we not all a bit weird when you get down to it we log in a world on a computer on a regular basis and by people that dont understand it we are the wierdos
I had to step away from this game just because it became too odd. I feel like 90 percent of it is about the sex. It is a game for adults however since it is also free to sign up n play a basic account underaged kids swarm the place as well. I mean a 15 year old kid 'Married' to a 37 year old woman, and both parties knowing others age but feel it is acceptable in game is not right.
Virtual sex is a huge part of the game. You can hardly go shopping without seeing it in some form or another. And lindens refusal to really put control over the minors that play the game is sickening. They leave that up to the other players. Other players that normally don't care who buys their product as long as it brings them money.
....this is a weird game....

I've noticed that the majority of people in Second Life are non-gamers, so you see a lot of communties dedicated to things such as religion, politics, roleplay fantasies, ethnic culture, fanaticism. Instead of common goals such as reaching the highest level, going to raids with friends that you'd expect from other MMORPGs, you find people's focus primarily on trying to sell some junk they made ingame for real currency, obsessing themselves with the online communities, spending time in the casinos(I think Linden Labs got into some legal trouble and had them removed though) or "sex clubs"(please..seriously?...).
Second Life is an example of a game world that has completely sold out to real world commercialism and moral values. There are sims completely dedicated to corporations, televisions shows, sexual fantasy, roleplay, whatever. I am in no way religious, but I think they might as well change the game's name to Sodom & Gomorrah Online.
To answer your question I think the only thing I have to bring up is a court case revolving around paypal and second life.

When people start suing over their virtually code generated (Adult themed objects) genitals and thrusting motions created while using these strap on contraptions; you can see where SL is with the people who play it when smut peddling is a part of the economy.
I guess I'm one of those weirdos being an androgynous looking male character and what not. I don't cyber because I think it looks funny considering that all avatars have no genitals in the first place (Barbie and Ken down there, folks, lol). None the less, I hang out in places marked M (like Boots' Beech (a gay focused beech, but it prohibits public displays of sex and nudity)), and places marked PG (Transgender Resource Center and etc), so I don't see what the big deal is.
Maybe you folks never been exposed to the reality that people have their kinks, but here's the kicker, it's all consensual in SL, no one can rape your avatar. It's pixels that you can control. If they harass you, you can report it, and usually a Linden will ban that person for at least a week or more depending on the severity of the log file (if they threaten to harm you in RL they get a hardware lock ban, which keeps them out for good). So, I say SL is probably safer than most online venues I've been in, especially for me considering that I am an atypical transgendered person.

The main reason for this is:
a) Linden Labs grant a person copyright rights to content they create. Due to the ablity to convert ingame money to real currency, someone who steals your idea's, takes money from you.
b) Secondlife is a open platform with general rules that follow local laws. Just like the internet, you give people freedom, your going to get porn. Porn in any form sells, and there is big money to be made in that area. People would stand to loose a ton if they didn't fight for there content, just like anything in real life.
c) you can lable this anyway you want, what you choose to do could be considerd sick to others. You have a choice to go and view what you want (as long as its not against the law in real life), and any time someone tries to force you into anything, it is delt with promptly providing you report the person.
Secondlife is not a program that directs the entertainment, is your job to go out and find your own fun, or make it. If your a gamer that is used to working inside a set of rules, and have content spoon fed to you through progression, then this is probably not for you.
