New player looking for a good char creation skill line

Soulmaneq2Soulmaneq2 Member Posts: 15

Hello gang,

I am about to start playing Eve online.  I played alot of different mmos for the last 8 years.  I play 40 hours a week or so.  I am looking for some help picking race, skill line etc for a new player.  My goals are large scale pvp with a corp, the more the merrier ( depending on tech stability).  I am in no rush.   Learning, training, university, missions etc, are fine with me.  I am happy to put in the time to do it right.   To make money I would rather kill stuff than mine stuff, if the option is available.  I like weapons that run on power over ammo, if they are competitive with the other.  Fly, shoot, war, follow orders not give them, missions to achieve, are the areas of gaming I usually enjoy.  I do like to be an honorable type player, I mean within the contents and community of the game.  Good over evil etc...

If anyone has any ideas on race skill etc it would greatly be appreciated.

There are some online tools you can use to explore starting character skills.

    Trak Cranker's start tool : http://dabomb.dk/eve/evestartchar/index.aspx

    Amarr Khanid Cyberknight Military Solidier

    +3 perception

    +2 intelligence

This race/bloodline will get the ball rolling quickly when learning combat related skills.

Most  Amarr ships use no ammo instead they use crystals to modulate energy into damage.

Lots of damage to start with prob more than any other race.

If you are in no rush, the best race for PvP skilling is Caldari Achura Monk. This will give you the highest perception and intelligence. You will have decent willpower and memory. Charisma will be very low, but this is nearly useless for PvP anyway.

You may not start off with flying ships that will appeal to you (Caldari specialise in missile ships that are famous for PvE and electronic warfare PvP). However, when you select the PvP race skills you want to train, you should catch up and do better than any other with time.

Learning, training, university, missions etc, are fine with me.  I am happy to put in the time to do it right.

If you are in no rush, start with a corp that will teach you the basics in every area first. The most famous of these is Eve University. They are not primarily a PvP corp, but they do get wardecced for roughly 1-week per month. The way they fight wars is almost perfect, with an exceptional efficiency rate. You will see the principles of how a war should be fought.

Once you have seen this, consider moving to a corp that focuses more on PvP.

To make money I would rather kill stuff than mine stuff, if the option is available.  I like weapons that run on power over ammo, if they are competitive with the other.

The 'power weapon' race is the Amarr, but some people think they are not as good as the other races.  However, if you take the time to specialise in them, I am sure they are equally as good if not better. Some people believe they have the most powerful fleet PvP battleships. In addition, the Amarr have excellent 'tech 2" recon cruisers for smaller gang fights.

However, generally speaking, the Amarr favour larger ships. I advise making your initial skilling goal the Abbadon battleship.  You could read about this ship and see if it appeals to you.

Fly, shoot, war, follow orders not give them, missions to achieve, are the areas of gaming I usually enjoy.

Most roles would suit you. If you don't like giving orders, avoid being a fleet or gang commander. If you like shooting, avoid covert ops.

Battleships do the high DPS shooting in fleet warfare. Battlecruisers are a good class for high DPS in roaming gangs or when you are still relatively new to the game.

You will always have missions to achieve.

I do like to be an honorable type player, I mean within the contents and community of the game.  Good over evil etc...

Once you have a feel for Eve Online in high security space (1.0 to 0.5) you could join 'The Great War' in 0.0 space. The side that does the least piracy is The Allies (allied to Band of Brothers). I say this because they do not run 'gate camps'. Gate camping is a form of piracy.

The Allies favor 0.0 space fleet warfare with Dreadnoughts, Motherships, Carriers, Battleships, Interdictors, a flotilla of heavy and light support craft, and lots of covert ops ships gathering intellience. Occasinally, they use Titans, the biggest and most powerful ships of all. These ships are exceedingly rare.

You will not be able to join a Band of Brothers corp for at least one year because they are Eve's equivallent to 'Special Forces'. However, you should join an alliance allied to them to begin with, such as: Interstellar Starbase Syndicate (ISS) or YouWhat. They fight in the fleets of Band of Brothers.

There is a great sense of community in The Allies. Indeed, members of Band of Brothers enjoy involving members of The Alliance with roaming gangs and other missions. And getting to know them is essential if you want to join the elite...

If anyone has any ideas on race skill etc it would greatly be appreciated.

The suggestions I have given you provide the best long-term strategy I can think of, tailored to your requirements.

If you have any futher questions, please ask them.

    Regards,   Jack

PS- The Amarr also have some of the best Titans, Dreadnoughts, Motherships, and Carriers. However, this would be planning for the very very long-term!

Dont over-look Minmitar. They may be slaves but there ships are fast and their guns dont use cap (ships Energy) to fire. Very "attacking" race with a wicked battle cruiser, The hurricane.

Make sure if you wanna PVP dont bother putting skills in charisma as you wont be running missions and can use the points for learning skills faster.

    GO MINMITAR!!!!

    Yes, I fly Minmatar too!

The Hurricane is an excellent ship for PvP roaming gangs, and as heavy support in fleet warfare.

    Minmatar use ammo.

Minmatar are the fastest. Because of this they have the best small ships, for my taste.

Minmatar also have excellent large ships. However, they require a lot of skilling up! If you want to play Eve for the long-term though, they are worth considering.

If you're not sure what race of ships to fly, you can either:

    - Read about them in more depth before making your decision (at the end of the day it's a personal choice)

    - Stick with Caldari for a bit.

    - Train Gallente for a bit (drones and nos, not the rail guns or blasters yet) and see what you think you might like. Drones are relevant for all races. Nos can be useful.

You might find you prefer speed and go Minmatar!

Thats alot of great info gang, I appreciate it.   Now that I have seen some of the terminology, Fleet warfare is my goal as opposed to just random pvp.  I have been doing alot of reading, but its difficult to compare things without some working knowledge to set the bar.

Here's a nice guide for new players to follow to make PVE or PVP characters for every race.....

It's not gospel (nothing is) but its not a bad place to start....

First off you can fly ships from any race.  Example is that I started as Caldari but decided to fly Gallante ships because they are more pvp oriented.  Now I fly Gallante ships almost exclusivly.

Second, a bit of info on which race specalises in:

Caldari - Use missiles as their main weapons but some can use rail guns.  Drones are secondary.  They shield tank.  Caldari also focus on ECM using jammers to keep your enemies from locking their targets.  Used mostly for NPCing and Mission running but I do know some good Caldari Pvp pilots out there.

Gallante - Main weapons are Railgun, Blasters and Drones.  They use ammo.  They armor tank.  They focus on extremely close range combat using Blasters and they also specialze in ECM using Sensor Dampeners to decrease your targets locking range and increase their locking time.  Good for Pvp.

Minmatar - Main weapons are Autocannons and Artillery.  They chew through ammo like crazy because of their high rate of fire.  They are kinda mixed in that they can either shield or armor tank and they have good close and long range attack abilities.  They are known to have the fastest ships and use speed as their primary defence alot of times.  Good for Pvp.

Amarr - Main weapons are Lasers and secondary are missiles.  They use crystals instead of ammo.  They armor tank.  They use NOS and Neutrilizers to suck the capacitor out of the enemy ships.  I dont know too much about Amarr but I DO know they have been given alot of love from the Devs lately.

Now if you are wanting to focus on Fleet battles then I would suggest staying away from Caldari for now and look at the other 3 first.  Gallante and Minmatar have your best damage output at range if you want to be a sniper.  Gallante has the best damage output at close range using blasters.  Amarr are more balanced in that they are quite effective at close range and long range.

If I was in you position, taking the knowledge that you have read in this thread, I would go out and look at some pictures of the ships in each race (aesthetics is important) then make your decision based on what you want and what each race offers.  There is no 'wrong' choice because you can always change your training track to another race's ships.
