in Everquest II
Forgive if this sounds too newbish but what is the deal with KOS? As a Qeynos based char., what happens when and if I try to enter Freeport or see an enemy guard?

They just teleport you to the outside of the city on a standard server since techincally they're not in full out war just a begrudged peace. There are some areas of the game where guards of opposing factions (seperate from qeynos and freeport) will Kill on Sight though so be wary.

Not newbish at all. Like has been said, the two sides are not at the point of open warfare, so you won't get jumped automatically.
For fun, I suggest that you run up to the guards and type /taunt.
They love that.
