Since when is there no open beta?

"What I don't believe in is unrestricted open beta. There will be a way to play in the game before it ships, and in large numbers."

Thats quoting rusty directly. So there will be a trial or something, just not open beta - Beta's arent to try out a game imo, its to help them fix it.

    Played almost everything...
    Currently playing nothing...
Waiting for: Darkfall, WAR, Guild Wars 2.

    I few posts down Rusty himself says;

"What I don't believe in is unrestricted open beta. There will be a way to play in the game before it ships, and in large numbers."

So you will be able to play it before buying it I guess. This game will be awesome I have no doubts.

Absolutely fantastic this bodes really well for this game, shows that they hav confidence in where they are at and also means that other than load testing we are in for a great game.

This just means that they have enough people signed up for closed beta that they don't need to do a general open beta.  I know they keep adding more and more people as they want more testers.  I don't think this will affect the quality of the released product for good or bad.  It would be different if they didn't have more than enough beta testers as it is, but as the game has been in development so long they have no problem getting tens of thousands of beta testers.  Not a big deal.

mmh... no unrestricted open beta. Sounds like LotrO/US, where you could play only 15 levels.

Look at it from a bright side.

No open Beta means , they do not need it , the game is good to ship.

    And it will ship sooner.

The problem with an open beta is you get a ton of people with no money, i.e. no access to daddy's credit card, who have no intention of buying the game.... then they spam the forums with flames and whines about how much the game sucks. Happens any time you give people with time on their hands access. Why should a company pay for that experience...?

Buy the game if you think it is worth it, and if you don't... then don't.

    Sorry mate

But that just aint right. For one I pledged to myself , I will never buy another game withouth at least playing a demo.

I have been lured with false promises many time before...

If FLS denies free trial , or open beta acces - i will not buy it. Until at least a majority of players or reviews brand it excelent.

But such thing never happens - even for the best of games.

So i still suggest some kind of trial

We are in total agreement then

Why don't people read the rest of the interview, he said that there won't be an unrestricted Open Beta.

There will be an Open Beta with restrictions, now what those are is beyond me. Perhaps they will require a credit card for age verification or something else, again until 19th of September we are pretty much in the dark.

If you really want access to Beta, just pre-order from EBGames with $5, try the game and if you don't like it just go back, cancel the pre-order and get your $5 back.

Those are gross assumptions. Roma Victor didn't have an open beta because if they did, they wouldn't have been able to sucker the initial 5000 accounts.

Good advice. Never preorder! Just ask the people that paid for "The Chronicle",  "Mourning" and "Roma Victor".

Lack of an open beta is poor marketing.

Sorry but I believe you are wrong and are using examples of failed releases to suit your argument. The concept of no beta where possible is a good one and can result in two scenarios total success or failure. It is also amusing that the cost of a game to myself is never something that disuades me from buying as money is not an issue. What is important is the design of the solution/game and this companies approach is the one I would take. And from experience people who really know what they are doing should only really need beta at the last minute for load/stress testiung purposes.

I always thought that Open Beta was used as a marketing tool to show off a well made game?  So if they don't have an open beta to try the game out I don't see it as a well made game and will just stear clear of it.

  • VortigonVortigon Member UncommonPosts: 723

Open beta is less about testing and more about advertising nowadays...the only thing open beta really adds is server stress testing.  Closed beta is where the real testing takes place its just a sign of the times.

Therefore the only thing that can be read into it is that they feel they don't need a server stress test for whatever reason.

Although I hope they offer a trial or similar as like others I won't be buying an MMO without first trying it anymore.

Nah you're a mile to trhe right, mainly load/stress tests/network capability tests, the logic of you're statement is based on what you think a beta is for not what they are for in reality.

I think his comment was fairly valid as Open beta 'used' to be 90% about testing but nowadays the vast majority of games running open beta use it 90% as promotion and as a hook to get people interested and also of course as network and server stress testing where required.

But it certainly has a large promotional aspect now and is much less about bugs than it was in the past.

So I suppose your both right really but its definetly not 'mainly' about testing anymore.

Any game that relies on free labor to actually test their product and bughunt, instead of hiring and paying real testers who will be responsible and professional, is doomed.
