I have never seen a MMO that has the potential to have a worse community than AoC.  I used to have lots a lot of respect for Funcom until this years  E3 the forst words out of the devs mouth was "Our game has boobies."  Not only did many fo the press people turn away in a look of disgust but it really tells you how they are marketing this game and who they are marketing it to.  Just shamless.  Do we really need to dumb down the MMO genre even more.  I have never rooted for a MMO to fail but this type of pandering to juvenile hormones makes me think  a successful AoC would be a very bad message to send to future games in an industry dominated by copying the success of previous games.

Its such a shame as the game  at its core it could be a very solid game.  Without aPG 13 servers or some way to protect adults t from the hormone raging kiddies I can't imagine playing AO unless the gameplay is absolutely amazing.

Considering nothing will be seen, and likely nothing will be heard, the screen will likely just fade to black and then come back up a couple of seconds later, I do not see why this is such a big deal. Half of you claim to be mature gamers and are scared of playing with "13 year olds", but it seems sort of immature to make such a big deal out of something little. Especially rooting for a game to fail. If you want the genre to keep taking steps backward, rooting for a game to fail is the number one way to go.

I think anyone who goes and buys AoC for the sex is a total looser lol, not only is this funny but you can watch all kinds of porn for free, live stream, pictures anything you like, why would you want to have sex in AoC? I dont think those players will last very long anyway, they added the sex and nudity as part of the lore, to make you feel more like you are into the story and I think its a nice feature and does give you a feeling of barbarism and Hyboria.

I am beggining to wonder if there will be a Whore proffesion later on in the game lol, anyway the M rating opens up alot of doors, even some for the 14 year olds but who cares, they are everywhere anyway so dealing with them is like second nature.

Yeah every game should have teen rating to avoid teenagers overunning it thats some great logic some of you guys have

Btw if your 14yo can play a mmo it means he/she has access to internet which means he/she can see much worse than aoc can ever hope to offer both in sex and violence. But if you are so much offended by a game with a mature rating you can simply ignore it and play something like hello kitty online.Just be careful not to confuse it with hello titty you might get a heart attack if you are so sensetive to seeing "boobies"

Sex in this game shouldn't give you a buff. It should give you a debuff and a chance of a std

Have to love pen and paper fantasy RPG's where the natural consequences of lack of planning and too much fun with strangers were set out ... pregnancy and all the stat modifiers that go with it.  Wisdom up, agility down, if you have the gold buy a ring of featherfall, or else whatever you do don't fall.  In RPG's, what you do can and should have consequences; what "rating level" the game is at is up to the GM and the group's players.

But I really cannot see an MMORPG ever getting very far with adding this kind of system into the game, online communities can be bad enough without someone saying "but you have to, it's cannon!".

I totally agree with that Ghost12 lol. I mean its funny...they yell SEX!! and everyone comes running lol. "Oh WOW!!! Ill get to pay a girl some money to watch the screen go black for a few seconds then come back with a buff that will last 5 mins!!! OMGGGGGG@!!!!!"

Seriously...come on!!! heres why i laugh at this. the game will not be allowed to actually show any actual signs of intercourse so theres nothing to get excited about. If they did the game would get a AO rating and the government in NA and some other countries STRICTLY forbid any video game retailers from selling a game thats AO..look at the whole Manhunt 2 fiasco..as soon as they got the AO (Adults Only) rating for there gaming all countries immediately told them they would not allow the game to be sold. EVEN the US government told them that they were not allowed to continue development on it with that Rating. So the devs went and changed ALOT of the game and made tons of edits just to get a M rating.

So dont get all excited just because of the word "sex" when you wont be getting much at all when it comes to this game.

The US government doesn't forbid anyone from making an AO game that is strictly a retailers decision.  The supreme court has struck down every such attempt at any law like that.  Hell. MMORPG even has an article on it.  On a side note, will the controller vibrate on the 360 version during sex?  Thats reason enough to get a 360.

While the comment about the US government was somewhat true, It was the ESRB that gave it the AO rating which lead to MANY US retailers to not sell it and Sony and Nintendo would not distrubte it for their consoles. NOW!! If what im seeing here in my other window is correct, it was the US federal Government that forced the creation of the ESRB, and if it was not created in one year (at the time of the federal hearing that took place) they were going to create a rating system of their own. This took place at the time the first Mortal Kombat was released and if you all dont remember it was the governments of the different countries (not just the US, but they were heavily involved) that were not allowing to let that game see light UNLESS a rating system was in place..hence the hearing. Now AO games do exist...BUT all companies like Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and other publishing/distribution companies that give us the games we know now DO NOT allow AO games to be released to the general public, not just because its their own policies, but if they did they even know that the US federal government would have them shut down, because they do not like that kind of stuff being released to the exposure of our youth. ok im done lol

Your whole argument is valid, except for the last part about the government. It would still be deemed unconstitutional if the US government were to shut down a game or ban it because of a AO rating and content. The main reason why those companies do not support AO is because it is not a very large market, and in general it is just not very appealing to support such games, because of retail outlets not supporting it, and the bad press such games have received. It's true that the US government may put pressure on such games, but they would not outright ban it from the market or shut down the publishers.

Oh and in regards to the AoC sex in the game....cool i guess

Ill be amazed if this game is even sold on shop shelfs now. After that banning of manhunt 2 in the uk, the amount of crap going on now in terms of violence etc, you can bet that shop retailers will not sell this game here. Will probably be worse in America they arent as lenient there as they are in the UK.

Anyway that aside, I think this game is going to have the worst community since wow. I already figured it would with the mature rating, it attracts anything but mature people see gta, and all the kids, who in reality are 30+ that inhabit their boards. now take into account this game will be on a console. lol

I dont understand what funcom are thinking, age of conan is a niche game, it will be even more of a niche with the high system specs it has, and with all this gimmicy crap they are adding, it will have the worst community ever. just seems like this game has very little chance of success. especially with the other mmos that have had the same problem have all failed miserably.

I must agree with Scriar, i'm afraid the community will be full of stupid kids..

OMG, Another feature available in Real Life get's implemented into a game! I shudder to think of the realism!

Seriously, it's just sex, everyone has it at some point (unless you die young), big deal. If you make a ''taboo'' out of it like it still is in some society's, you will only attract attention seeking kiddies more. Make it a common thing and I bet it's less of a problem for everyone (and safer lol).

  • felix77felix77 Member Posts: 84

I don't think the sex is necessary. It's being used to hype the game even farther. I'm hoping that it doesn't hurt sales in the end. I'm going to play the game ether way, I think they should work on that PVP a bit instead though. I know it's still early but it wasn't that impressive. The very weak damage put out by the Guardian was a little disappointing and the combat wasn't that impressive. Didn't see any combo's. But we have to remember it's being played by newbs.

Sex in the game does fit in to the story line but even R.E.H. never wrote about it. He left it up to the imagination. They should definitely not show it in game at all.  I don't think they should even mention it until after launch as it can make a negative impression of the game in many peoples eyes.

You have to ask yourself, what does it add to the game? Sure it is in the books/comics/lore, but in those things, sex (or premise of sex) is used to enchance the storyline and atmosphere of the settings. Does going to an npc (let's say pc's can't have sex with each other for now) payign some coins, having your screen go bloack for a few seconds and getting a buff for it, add anything the the game?

In fallout 2 (my faverite game =p) they didn't have nudity, but there was some off screen sex (implied) and there was a lot of use of drugs/alcohol/sex in the game. It added to the storyline and the setting of the game. If they had to make it a t rated game (I assume it's an m rated game lol)  the game wouldn't be as fun as it is.

But in aoc, it just seems like funcom is trying to put in a bunch of things that an m rated game can have but a t rated game can't, even though none of those thigns enchance gameplay in any way. Buckets of blood splashign out of people on every hit doesn't really enchance the game. boobies and naked mobs doesn't really make the game any better, now sex for buff =p how does it enchance the game play?

The only thing aoc gets out of M rating that actually enchances gameplay is ability to cut off lbody parts, but even that is debatable (ie, can you cut off someone's arm, but they still live? or is it reserved for fatalities of srots)

It is for fatalities, and the reason they are likely doing this isn't for the gameplay aspect, but more or less the lore that the game comes with. How many stories in Conan didn't involve something getting cut off, blood, and sex? You will likely find these in more stories than not. Not everything is about gameplay. Why is there / commands in most games that have nothing to do with gameplay? It just adds something to do, and it can be used and applied in role play situations. I don't know if you have been on the official forums much, but there is an overwhelming amount of people who chose the RP server when the moderators made a poll for it. Role play may be more common in Age of Conan than in other MMORPGs.

Oh please. This is just a marketing strategy. Mention the word 'sex' in a game and everyone gets their pants in a bunch whether for or against it. Then those people make a lot of noise all over the net, you know, because it's fucking scandalous . And then the media get the game in their front pages, and people who don't know shit about MMO's or Conan for that matter start talking about it to people they know and so and so on.

Look at GTA. Being an actually good and fun game has nothing to do with all the attention it gets. It could be crap for all we care and it would still have country governments banning its sale. Outdated morality aside, it's not such a big deal. Except that pretty much everyone has an outdated morality, and lookie look, we all have our pants in a bunch. Adds to gameplay? Sure, you get a buff. That's already better than the /dance command. Could not be implemented and no one would miss it? Sure, I mean, no one here was even contemplating the possibility of this "gameplay quirk" before it was announced. Bottom line, it's just another 'feature', and let's hope Funcom is not aiming at the easily impressed and even more easily offended crowd of both moronic kids and retarded grown ups (gamers and non-gamers) just to snap some controversial marketing out of the WoW-dominated panorama; and is instead taking its own game seriously as a platform for entertainment for all us rabid hobbyists. I'm not too sure it's the latter, though.

I have to say this is a good marketing strategy to reel in the Teenagers.

This sadly is actually the best advertisement they have done. Think about it, nothing has garnered this much attention for this game as this whole sex topic. Topics are being made about it and they are very active. It at the very least is making people visit this forums to see what is up.

we will just have to hope the parents will watch their kids and stop them from seeing something SO TERRIBLE as sex. probably be better off playing a game that is violent right?

okay i just did it and now i'm fatigued not buffed. my wrist was hurting and if i lied down i could probably fall asleep. so why the backwards buff... just a gimmick to get teenagers i guess.

i suppose i've experienced the opposite too.

so i guess my question is, how does it enhance gameplay?

    I totally agree.

Do you'll forget, this is about capitalism ?

So, some of the WAR/Mystic fanboys are upset about AoC/Funcom of stealing the spotlight this weekends conventions -- "By announcing the buff from having sex. "   I don't see in what aspect this will happen, but being a female gamer, my guess that's its in the dark and its all fuzzy and takes 2 seconds.  Please don't flame its only a hypothesis.

Sex and gore/violence sells - and it always well.

Funcom is breaking new ground, embrace it!   They are the first to realize that we MMOgamers are maturing and its about time to allow the TRUE Lore of the culture/genre they represent.  And for what I understand this is the first MMORPG with a "M" rating that includes adult sexual content and the degree of gore to be expected.

Both genre of games, friends and I have been waiting for years, its almost unfortunate that they are being released months apart for I know that its separating many gamer relationships to which genre/series they prefer.

Mostly this post is to say kudos to Funcom for having the balls for new MMORPG content, even though the timing was a bit tacky.
