I just recently quit smoking after 3 years. I started with some stress I picked up during my sophomore year of highschool. It was probably the easiest habit to pick up next to the adoration of teen-aged girls, since cigarettes were easier to get than loose[lose]-change on the gasstation sidewalk

--------

I was not a pack-a-day smoker, but I went through a lot. Probably around 420 packs in those three-years. But, it killed me to run and lifting was not getting any easier. I coughed blood in my shower last month and decided I needed to quit. I also sneezed blood onto one of my v-neck tees. It stained. Its cool. I tried taking the easy way out and switching to dipping until I didn't want a cigarette anymore, [because I was an idiot and thought dipping would be easier to quit than smoking, not realizing the real bastard was nicotine] but I found myself dipping in both gums while simultaneously smoking a camel-wide.

Foiled!

-----------------------

I am not old enough to buy patches or gums [21+], so I thought I would start a cold-turkey campaign. I went without a cigarette for 5 days. Now, I don't think all of you know this, but apparently, there is this hump on the tobacco Camel at 3 days. I didn't realize this until a friend told me, so I celebrated...with a cigarette. Actually 6 or 9. Things were going good.

------------

This was getting ridiculous. All my friends smoke, so I could not exactly escape it. I was sauna-ing and exercising at a Mary-Kate rate to cut the cravings.

I talked to my best friend about it during a Denny's run at 4 in the morning about 2 weeks ago. We smoked and drank coffee. Like I said, things were going good.

He told me that I needed to find some denizen and/or God in order to quit. I blew smoke in his face.

Obviously conspiracy.

---------------------------

A week later and with a rather large, full, evil ashtray looking at me with puppy-dog eyes everytime I woke up, I realized things were a tad off-schedule.

Now, this was a week ago. Now, I know what you are saying. "OHHHH He said he quit in the first line of his thread! LIER LIER LIER POST ANGRY POST ANGRY!"

Hear me out.

-------------------------------------

Last Sunday, I went to a golf course to shoot 9-holes. I had never been to this course before and I was a tad...well surprised to learn that this was a smoke-free establishment.

This was one of those, "Out doors" golf-courses, in case I did not mention that.

Now, I don't know how the smoke from a single cigarette gets trapped in a 4 square-mile golf-course, causing 300 cases of second-hand smoke, 299 lawsuits, and 20 deformed babies, but I felt obligated to not light-up. Don't ask me why. The officials were in their 80s. I could take them.

The course was pretty nice. I shot a 50, which was half of a hundred millimeters, which is the size of my marbolo longs, so I had to smoke.

------------------------------

Now, my stop smoking campaign had been going on for 3 weeks and I had not really quit. Actually, to be honest, I was actually smoking more. You see, quitting is quite stressful.

I was disgusted with myself....on Saturday.

--------------------------

You see, I have quit smoking. It has been a day, but I have quit smoking.

Now, I could use some E-support. Send me support. Send me money. Send me flowers. Send me nicotine patches so I can eat them. I don't care, just give me some backup mmorpg.com. I want to offically quit before I go back to class on the 15th.

I promise to honor each person who supports me with a one-of-a-kind /hug once I get through this.

Wait, you can buy tobacco at 18, but you can't get the patches or gum at 18?

    Are you sure about this?

    Yes.

And I don't think patches and gum would be a good quitting option for me, as I swallow gum all the time and since one of my life-long goals is to see how many nicotine patches I can wear without passing-out.

You could have said the exact same thing for almost every thread in the Off-Topic forum.

For the OP, definitely stay off of them...those stories of "My uncle joe smoked 2 packs a day, and ate bacon grease by the buckets until he was 102 and he was fine" are the exception, not the rule. I remember at my work there was this huge fad of tooth-picks...soaked in something...I want to say mint or something, supposedly it helped them a bit. Stay strong!

    Easiest way to stop...

    Non-Smoker's lung:

    Smoker's lung:

My mother died from lung cancer a couple years back. She smoked since she was 14. She died when she was 48. If that isn't enough reason to stop, then nothing ever will be.

Its kind of ironic you ask this on the MMO forums. Whats even more ironic is my suggestion.

Play an MMO. Thats right. Play an MMO just dont smoke. The MMO itself is addicting and will divert your attention; then you can stop smoking. I dont know, just a suggestion, though you probably already tried this? (Since youre on here).

Anyway, good luck trying to quit. There really isnt an easy way out besides the patches and whatnot. Even then, almost all of it is willpower. You gotta try harder! Best of wishes, good luck bro.

    Cmon YOU CAN DO ET!!!

i would say go back to dipping, but slowly decrease the amount you take in and eventually hopefully you wont need it as much anymore and go cold turkey from there since itll be easier...

Do what my father did.... start eating candy, like Smints or mentos or something, instead of cigarettes... whenever he felt like a cigarette he took a smint, or 2... he quit smoking in 1 week...

Gum was always what I chewed when I could not smoke. I am a tad OCD, so gum stopped me from tapping my foot or well, craving a smoke. Funny enough, I am an pack-a-day Orbit gum chewer.

Well thanks for the support. I didn't smoke today. Most of the reason being that I am out and I need to go buy more.

The dipping-to-quit method looks good on paper, but I don't see that being practical for me. I don't see myself reaching into a can of dip and rolling a wad during my breaks at work.

I can't say I am madly craving a cigarette as I type this. The cravings mostly come when I am used to having cigarettes; mainly after meals and during my breaks and when I write. I am seeing a bunch of my buddies at a bar tonight, so I will be heavily exposed to smoke and I may reach a breaking point.

And the pictures of lungs that have been destroyed by smoke don't really phase me or do anything to stop, so don't post them anymore. Remember, I splattered bits of my lung onto my shower-wall and laughed about it.

No, the pictures weren't meant to "scare" you. Just imagine how functional one of those lungs would be. The best way it was described to me on how it feels to breathe from one of those lungs (which comes from a friend who had one removed that looked like that) is this:

Take 3 regular straws and attach them so you have one long straw. Do something physical like walking up stairs and suck the air only through the straw. The difficulty breathing through the straw is similar to what is is like to breathe with emphysema.

You live a shorter life, you can't do as much physical activity and you waste money.  Just my two cents on the topic.

I've never smoked a single "sin stick" in my life, but you'd figure this biggest draw to stopping is the fact that after 3 years, prob less for you, your lungs are almost completely healthy again.

Ever since I started smoking marijuana my motivation to go outside and smoke a cig has been reduced drastically. To balance this I drink every night, and my motivation goes up again. I guess this means you should become a non-drinking pothead to stop smoking cigs.

How exactly is dipping a good alternative to smoking?  You do realize that the side effects can be even worse and develop more quickly right?

I say you go out and subscribe to world of warcraft...just don't join a raiding guild - the stress will make you want to smoke again.

hey man, the first step is admitting you have a problem, which you have done

and face it, your addicted, so its a tough process

    but its doable

just keep at it and put EVERYTHING you have into it, and youll perservere!

  • Do you have any friends or family who can go buy the patch for you? I don't know how things work where you are, but in Florida they are over the counter. There are also prescription drugs that are sometimes used. There's something new called Chantix that seems to be working well, athough it's expensive and not usually covered by insurance. There are cheaper things they use, as well. I only bring this up because they do help people, not all people and not all the time, but it's still an option.

To be honest, I've heard from doctors that most people who manage to quit long term do so cold turkey, without any kind of drug replacement therapy.

All of my friends who've quit and managed to stick to it have told me they develop a new habit to replace the smoking. What you do with gum is a perfect example. I remember reading some wierd psychological thing about it, transfering emotions and cravings from something harmful to something benign.

i guess this could  help in a way, yes it has about three times as much tar but if you use a bong it is reduced durastically, if you use a vaporizer you get no tar at all ...

what marijuana can help people do still amazes me, yet its still ilegal

i would also like to add our first couple of presidents grew it, but now it is illegal

I think i am going to start a life long quest to help marijuana become legal, as most of you may have noticed, i chose to start here

These are my thoughts also.  Find something to replace your addiction, but make sure it's something that won't cause other problems.  If you like any healthy foods like carrots, apples, bananas, etc. then just make sure your place has always got some stocked to keep you busy.  Gum is good but aspartame and splenda have their own medical issues for some people.

    Best of luck to you.

I wanted to get the point through that I am a very intelligent person and definitely not weak-minded, and therefore, not too proud to admit that I obviously have a smoking addiction.

    But, thanks for your thoughts.

And when you want to give up weed because you've turned into a fat lazy shit you can take up Heroin. Pure H injected does no damage to the body at all so is even better than weed or Tobacco!

And when you want to give up H because you're a skinny zonked out social leper try taking up crack, you'll soon become far more social. True it has some side effects but that's no problem.

And when you want to give up crack because you beat up your mother for $20 so you could buy a rock try cold turkey.

I mean drugs they say they have bad side effects, but where's the evidence?

What I did many years ago when my then wife was pregnant was to buy a set of weights, dumbells and barbells. When I felt like a smoke I worked out for an hour, I haven't had a cigarette in over 10 years now and am alot better for it. Replacing one drug with another is idiotic and weak.
