54.0 Mbps = 25.0 KBs/sec????

Hey everyone, now I have been downloading things for years now, and I have a DSL wireless modem I use, but I just occured to me that there might be fast downloading rates than 25.0 KBs/sec, so I googled around and found that average is in the 100s!!! So I'm sending this desperate message out to see if someone could help me find this problem, or what i'm doing wrong.

with your dsl line you should have a constant line speed, depending on what you're paying for.
head over to http://www.dslreports.com/tools and do some line testing, checking and tweaking.

Wireless might limit your LAN to 54Mbps, but 54 Mbps = 6750 KBps.
Most likely your internet connection is a lot slower than your wireless LAN.
Perhaps you have a 2 Mbps internet connection, which is 25 KBps. (8 bits to the Byte).
You may transfer files from one computer to another on your Wireless LAN at 54 Mbps, but anything over the internet will still be limited your your broadband speed or "internet bandwidth" which is not the samething.
It is possible that you have a wireless router/ASDL modem all in one unit. The modem part of that unit that connects to the internet, is not wireless and does not run at 54 Mbps. Only the router part does that. (The part of the box that transmits the signal from the modem to your PC or from one of your PC's to another of your PC's on the same local network).
Typically we connect to the internet via an ASDL or Cable Modem. If a 2 meg DL speed is too slow for you, it is possible that your srvice provider may be able to upgrade it, or that another service provider could offer you faster.
There are also upgrades available for your wireless LAN, you could swap that 54 Mbps for a 102 Mbps system quite cheapily. This would not however improve your 25KBs internet connection speed in any way.
well ports is only really an issue if you are using some type of program to download/upload/interact with the internet

Just one more question remains, how do I check what internet speed my ISP is providing? If I look on the little wireless thing on my toolbar, it shows me constant 54.0 Mbps, but as you told me, that isn't my internet speed (in a sense). So how would I check that?

This is what It came up with... But that don't seem right, considering I justdownloaded D.N. which is 450 some odd MB, and it took me a good 5 hours, DLingat 25 KBs/sec.........Tue, 24 Jul 2007 04:10:12 GMT1st 128K took 4805 ms = 27278 Bytes/sec = approx 227 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 4818 ms = 27205 Bytes/sec = approx 226 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 4769 ms = 27484 Bytes/sec = approx 229 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 4754 ms = 27571 Bytes/sec = approx 229 kbits/sec
Does anyone know why that would be telling me 227 KBs/sec but I only get 24-27 KBs/sec?

I can't really help you with your DSL, sometimes it just sucks ya know? Perhaps you should switch to cable internet if it is available. It's odd I hear a lot of people have problems with low DSL speeds but I actually get about 400kb/s back at home with mine. Only costs me about $15 a month too.

I think your dsl modem is 256Kb/sec , but when your downloading files its 25k/bsec.
This makes sense because my modem speed is 5mbps and when im downloading its at around 500kbs/sec.
Thats how it kinda works because when i use to have a dial-up connection, it was 56k and when dling it was around 5-6kb/sec.
In general you dl speed is slower than your connection speed.
Have you got a static or dynamic IP
If you have a dynamic IP you share the IP with other people, therefore the most people in your area use the same line, the slower your connection will be.
Also if you live far from the phone exchange that might affect the speed of your broadband too, generally the further you live the slower the connection is.
But it would be good to have more informations like, which ISP you have, which package you use.
There can be some restrictions from your ISP, maybe your package doesn't allow you to download faster than that rate.
If you have a 512 kpb or 1 MB package your effective download rate is between 30-50 kbps.
In order to download between 100 and 200 Kbps you need minimun a 2MB static connection.
In UK we have good broadband service, the majority of our ISP use static IP, therefore our actual download speed is superior to the rest of Europe (except for scandinavia).
I know for sure that in other countries most ISP use dynamic and the average download speed is slower.
I have a 2MB connection and my download speed is 250 Kbps, my brother in Italy has a 8MB and his speed is only 100 Kbps, that's because he has a dynamic IP (shared) while I have a static (dedicated).
It could also be that the server you are downloading from is slow.
For example if you download WoW patches from Blizzard that would be very slow, if you download it from Fileplanet is 10 times faster.
In short, there are many reasons why your downloads are slow, but it is not the wireless the problem.

Whatever Megabit connection you have, divide it by 8 and that's the top kilobytes per second speed you should be able to get.
Mr. Op you have a 256 kiloBIT connection, your max download speed you mentioned is pretty much correct, no problem with your wireless.
My 54 Mbps runs 150 no problems, sometimes i even hit the magical 200...
do you even know what 54 Mbps means ? Thats almost8 megabytes per second. Seriously you people need to learn a little more about your computers and internet connections lol.

I figure I have a dynamic IP
my ISP is... Quest Communications and I have a Linksys wireless router.
Now for wireless, no matter what wireless internet I connect to, it gives me that 54.0 Mbps. Maybe every internet I connect to has that speed, who knows.
However, this router is also hooked up to my desktop, and then it shows 100.0 Mbps when connected directly using a ethernet line. But... I still get about 24 KBs/sec, same as my wireless, but different Mbps.
So I figure what that means is that it's restricted to a certain download speed, yes?
Ibexto: I went to http://www.speedtest.net/ and got these results:
218 KB/s Download - 208 KB/s Upload
Lat: = 109 ms
yeah... guess that's it, Quest just restricts your downloading speeds. But for $30 a month, you'd think they'd give you something more... Heh, thanks for the help everyone!

Are you people listening ? You are restricted by the plan you have with your ISP thats about it. The speed you are seeing under connection is not your connection speed, it is the top speed you could possibly have using that ethernet card. The Op pays to have a 256 kbit connection and the guy 2 posts down from this one has a 1.5 mbit connection, christ.
I think he understood if the post above yours is true.
I think we are all saying that the problem is a package restriction, no need to get excited.
