Character creation--what does "distance" mean?

I'm about to create a new character but don't know what "distance" means when choosing a realm. Can anyone tell me please?

Should be the number of jumps between you and the physical location of the server. Try to choose one with a lower number.
Or, be smart now, and don't give $OE money for this...supposed game.
Yes, higher the number the further the server is away from you.
