An amazing opportunity

Hey folks, first off, I'm not really sure if this belongs here, or in the off topic forum. However, if it is in the wrong forum, no biggie, just move it.

Okay, to start off, I have the amazing opportunity to have someone else buy me a laptop. Of course, this would be a gaming laptop, along with my future years in school.

The price range is capped at about  $1,500 (I know this may not seem much to some of you, but is quite the gift to me)

Casual - Average gaming (this means wow, CS, Ryzom,etc...)

Now, I have a couple questions:

I'm looking at an HP, and I've got a nice one picked out, that will suit my needs, I think...

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/cto/computer_customize_components.do#includedFeatures

Now there are only two things I'm not liking about this laptop:

one, it's a full keyboard, with a num-pad. Now I can't see a way to remove it (it makes it way to big, and I heard it shifts some keys around) If anyone seems to see a way, I'd be overjoyed to hear it.

two, It has a NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 6150  graphics card.

Now is this a worth while graphics card? I've got no clue, other than it's not an Intel (atleast I've gotten that far)

Finally, will this be able to handle mmorpgs at a fairly good fps? (thinking around 40)

Any comments or other good laptops out there would be a GREAT help (really, anything at all)

Much, much thanks

If I were you I would go and look at alienware.com at some of the laptops there. you can get a pretty good one for 1500.  And for anyone wanting to flame me, I'm only recommending this to you because someone else is paying, but imo they can be overpriced sometimes. so gl finding a new laptop :)

This person buying the laptop for me is also someone that care dearly about, and would not like to waste their money in the least bit.

And yeah, I did look at alienware, and found the Area-51 for 1500, and it didn't have as good as specs and the HP I put up the link to. (Now i know HP's doing something to their website, and it's down, but it's one in the morning, what else could you expect?

Anyway, I believe alienware is a waste of money, HP has better specs for the price. The fancy case I can live without

Please explain why anyone in their right mind would buy you a laptop.!!!!

You have stated no justification as to what the benefits and the period of return of an investor  who buys you this will be ?

    very lame

Graduation gift perhaps, a new beginning to a new collage perhaps?  There ARE people out there that give without getting anything in return...  as crazy as that sounds.

Laptops and gaming have never been a great combination. But as you are also a student they tend to be the way to go. Hp does make good laptops for an average user but as a game platform ... eh ... Ok I guess. Dell's XPS is a good choice as it is a gaming laptop (for what that is worth)

For good frame rate you may have to look at lowering the quality of the game. Most laptop graphics cards are very lacking and a 6150 is what I would call a low end desktop and midrange laptop card. To keep the lag to a minimum you may want to make sure that the ram is right up there (2GB or so)

Sounds like you got a sweet deal though

Is really that important to why this person is buying me a laptop? That doesn't effect anything in the slightest bit.

Anyway, To update what I have posted:

I've decided to go with the 15.4" dv6500t.

    Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz/4MB L2Cache)

    2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)

VISTA ONLY! (OMG! I hate vista)

    383MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

    120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

1-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Express Repair

    Total = $1,308

Not to bad, I don't think. Now does anyone have an opinion on this graphics card????

Please, feel free to say anything, don't care if it's just a  "meh, I don't care" Or something productive like: "Oh yeah, I've got a friend with one of those, he loves it." etc...

Also, how bad will vista effect my gaming? ug..

    Much thanks!!

    ~Romoko

EDIT: I looked into the XPS, but i felt like it's a box with a lid. Not really much to it, and it costs about  $2,200... kinda out of the price range.

EDIT #2: Is this graphics card more worth my while than the previous one? (thanks for contributing that little bit of info )

Well as for vista effecting your gaming, right now vista doesnt support many games and if it does support that game often times the came can run very poorly for most people.  but some people get lucky and it runs normal and smooth. But thats a nice choice good specs, and gratz on the new laptop!
  • RomokoRomoko Member Posts: 95
Wow that's really nice, a little bit more, but the graphics card in considerably better.. right? Kinda new to reading the graphics card mumbo jumbo that comes with it. But what i've found is the the NVIDIA Go is better than the GS.

So this asus is better than the HP i'm looking at, but is it worth $300 more?

So, My friend buys this great PC from a company called Ibuypower.  a week or 2 later it comes to his door.  I came to his house and we set it up.  Pressed the power button .. "No hard drive found".   We opened up the case, the sata hard drive was not hooked up with the right raid configurations.   So we went back and fourth from part to configuration for mearly 3 hours untill finally he got what he paid for...  The End.

I wouldnt recommend ibuypower.com.   But maybe Im the only one with a horror story

Took a look at ibuypower, and what I found was it was about the same price, for everything but a difference graphics card.

So it all comes down to what graphics card is better:

    The:

    Mobility 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 PCI-Express 3D Viedo

    or the:

    383MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

This seems like the deal breaker

(Sorry for all these damn questions, it just seems that the only difference between laptops these days are the Graphics Cards.)

Thats the laptop I'm going to get haha.  Yea I read up on that GFX Card and its one of the new DX10 ones and because of the 2GB or RAM you will get a lot of shared memory.  With the high processor you'll keep it all running smoothly and should be able to have a good time on basically any game.  Huzzah.

Okay, having done my research for an extensive amount of time now, I've come to a conclusion.

First off, DO NOT buy from Ibuypower. I did a little research on them, and found that around 80% of the time, the computer is considerably late, and 50% of the time is not in working condition. So I've finally made decided on the HP dv6500t with:

    Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz/4MB L2Cache)

    2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)

    Vista Home Premium

    383NVIDIA GeForve 8400M GS

    120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

1-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Express Repair

    Total = $1,308

Great little computer, and can run everyone at a fairly well rate.

Thanks for all your help everyone! This basically because a place where I just wrote down my thoughts about what I was researching at the time.

P.S. If anyone has any last moment comments on this laptop, please let me know, I'm happy to hear 'em.

Well, I ended up going with this one. The graphics card is dedicated with 512MB... that'd insane, 2 gigs of ram, 160G HD, intel Core 2 Duo! That's all together insane for the price =)

So, Just want to thank everyone very very much!
