WoW isn't dead yet.

What's with the doomsayers? World of Warcraft not dying and certain is not dead.

I can see that a lot of people really don't like it, but the 50 people in these forums that do compared to the 8.5 million (and rising) that play... I second guess the death of this behemoth of a game.

I personally hate this game and I do not play it. That does not mean it's dying.

Reasons why these false-prophecies of WoW's doom are, um.. false:

    1)  Haters do not understand the staying power of Blizzard games.   Do your research!

    2)  These people have no facts or figures to back their claims of WoW 'dying', only heresay.  They have nothing.

    3)  WoW started off with 400,000 - went to a million, two million, four million... etc.. 8.5 million over the course of two years.  At some point it will dip, but that doesn't mean the game is dead.  It'll probably raise again with a 2nd expansion, and a 3rd, until Blizzards next MMO comes out.

These people will never be happy with any MMO I bet, so they take their bitterness out on WoW simply because so many people enjoy it, and they're unable to.   It's ridiculous.  Why so much hate towards this game?   These people are pathetic.

Oh yeah, and fanboys are pathetic too?  Because we ask you to provide proof when you make claims that the game is dying?  When we say "hang on a minute, what you're saying is completely untrue and here is why..."  Because, god forbid, we actually like the game? Is it too hard for you people to admit to liking something popular.  Is it like when obscure bands suddenly become really popular and people stop liking them?  Is this some kind of "trying to be individual so I'll play a crappy bugged MMO instead" kind of thing?

I'd rather be enjoying something constantly, than hating it.  If I don't enjoy something, I ignore it.  It just seems a happier way to live.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

Wow is not dying. For every 20 people that quit 30 new people seem to join. I think what people are trying to say is wows aura of invincibility is fading thats all. People for the first time are starting to actually look at other games which was unheard of before. They could get it right back by making a new version of wow. But overall yes blizzard is doing fine and will continue to make good games.

This game will never die, just like many other MMOs.  The population will just decline.

Hell, people probably still play Diablo 1 battlenet

Yep, many people getting bored with WoW and switch to other mmos like LoTRO, but WoW not going to die, whoever says that either plays first mmorpg in their life or just plain stupid. Many people going to leave, yes, but fanboys always stay, just watch how many people still play EQ.

I've yet to see a once incredibly popular MMO die in burning fires quick. Its always been a slow pittering burn off. Hell I wish SWG would die already so they would start dev on a new one. People love playing games and will go back to games off and on no matter how bad the game is or what they've changed. People cling to hope.

If WoW releases another terrible expansion it may possibly die, but 1 bad expansion doesn't tend to kill giants.

Well if Burning Crusade is "terrible", I think that a good expansion will mean that major world governments will force people to play the game by Law.

By terrible, you actually meant that you don't like it, didn't you?

    WoW dying? Not likley.

Let me start by saying that I used to play WoW. I don't anymore, but I played for about 2 years. I think Blizz made a incredible game that revolutionized MMO's. However, I became so bored with it that I had to stop playing.

I currently play Eq2 which I also think is an awesome game. Ton's of content, almost too much. But WoW will never die. As a reminder, I would like to remind you all that Eq1 is still alive and kicking. They recently released an anniversary addition which is selling quite well and the last expansion still had a devoted audience. These games don't really die (for the most part).

I will say this though, There IS NOT 8 million active players. If you do your research you will find that Blizzard themselves admit that the number they give out is not active players. It is anyone who ever tried the game - including trial accounts. I would never dispute that the game is great, or that it obviously has more players then any other game, all I'm saying is that the numbers are a bit skewed.

    Have fun!!

The trolls are just trying to convince you that because they do not enjoy this game it is dying or is a horrible game.

It is sad that they have nothing better to do other than bash a game only to bother people, but there are alot of people like that and the best thing you can do is ignore them.

edit* Yes that is a reference to that certain troll thread. In case your wondering.
  • RecantRecant Member UncommonPosts: 1,586
Yeah it's not 8 million actual players, just paying accounts.   It's just an indicator of population, not accurate.  Like when EVE has 24k concurrent users online at one time, a lot of people have multiple accounts - because that's a game where it's very easy to play multiple accounts (miner/ hauler for example).

There's no reliable way to give the actual number of individual players in a game like WoW.  Higher numbers sound better, which is why companies describe paying accounts instead of trying to figure out who has multiple accounts.

I don't even play WoW, but c'mon people. Even if WoW lost 3/4 of their current users, their subscription numbers would STILL overshadow any other MMORPG on the American market right now. Just play the games you enjoy playing and knock it off with all this naysaying and wishing gloom and doom on titles you don't like. Who cares? There's a heck of a lot more things in this world worth directing your negative energy towards.

World of Warcraft did in fact die exactly 22 days ago, 45 minutes from now.

There are only 135 people who play WoW right now, they're all on the Greymane server and apparently no one told them WoW, in fact, died.

yeah, like George W. Shrub, Starfire, Monfire, pew pew , pew pew pew.  LOL

Most people are too busy enjoying  TBC to troll these forums. I'm bored at work otherwise I'd be enjoying the beauty of Nagrand right now.

WoW won't die, it might not even fade away. Until WoW stays off the PC Top 10 sales list for a few months, you can't talk about it being dead. I think TBC did cause a reduction in the number of active players. Most of the people I knew that had played it since US release didn't quit until a month or two ago. Myself included.

I have to agree with the person that said for every 20 that quit 30 more start. I don't think it's that high, but for now more people buy the game than people leave the game.

I think only Blizzard can "kill" WoW. Don't expect the next hyped MMORPG to be a WoW killer. I think Blizzard's next MMO will be the biggest dent in their subscribers.

WoW certainly is not dying. Ultima Online has been out for almost 10 years and is still going. I will, however, say that I do believe the population is now decreasing instead of increasing. I usually would NEVER pay attention to posters on the forums but you can't ignore the fact that there are more and more negative posts about the game and not all of them are from morons. People have raised a number of concerns(I am one of them) about the state of WoW. Complaints include:

    1. Blizzard has no competition and therefore have become lazy,

    2. Burning Crusade, while a MASSIVE expansion, did not change anything and just added the same old stuff,

    3. Reputation grinding is becoming highly annoying,

    4. The BC instances are linear and poorly done. You could do instances like STratholme over and over and not get bored, many people don't want to do the BC instances more than once.

There are other of course, but these are the ones I see the most. I personally cannot stand to even log on my characters anymore. I have never been a hardcore player so it's not like I burned myself out playing too much. Once I hit 70 on my BE mage i just could not stand it anymore. I played Ultima Online for 9 years almost uninterrupted. I have only played WoW a year and this is my second break(about a month) already. Obviously this is just my opinion but it seems that more and more players are saying the same things.

It would be nice to see another expansion released for WOW...

One that blew the previous expansion and the game itself out of the water...

If it actually sticks to the Warcraft series then that is what will happen... Frozen throne rocked =)

I myself completely loathed the game.  However, I am willing to admit that a lot of people out there still play it and seem to like it for reasons unknown to me.  It certainly did have some unique aspects.  As said before, they could lose a large chunk of their population and still be huge.  My hope is that something actually worth the numbers WoW currently has is released.  The sad truth is though, I don't see any earth shattering titles just yet.  Bioware, our hope lies with you...

You know... I really used to hate WoW and swore to bring down Blizzard as far down as humanly possible. but after seeing LoTRO... I have relized that WoW ant all that bad and I should instade shoot nukes at LoTRO! Whoever says that LoTRO will take down WoW has there head so far up there ass that there is no more hope for them to see the light aging. As a really old WoW flamer all I have to say to the Tolkien nerds is that they should DO THERE RESEARCH! Blizzard is the jugernaught of MMo's!. It like Wal-Mart to Target. Like Google to Yahoo. Its always on the top and I dont think that it will be falling off the charts in a long time! But thats my two cents on the dying subject.

still TBC was rubbish and was in developement for 2 years....their next expansion has to be awesome and innovative or else wow will die.

No, I mean terrible there guy. It did nothing but add the same thing to the game that it already had. It didn't add any new flare. Any new things worth doing.

    You're still leveling.

    You're still grinding rep.

You're still killing the EXACT same scripted fights. (Yeah they are the same scripts since Naxx)

(Nothing new scripted for events in BC as of current)

O, they candy covered new races that don't even make sense in the LORE.

They forget to add content to specific crafting profs making some less valuable than others.

They did not balance classes prior to release and obliterated the use of specific classes.

They are still having issues balancing down to the 25 man raids.

There are several gold and item exploits still in the game from the BC beta.

I will continue, but I feel this will be enough for you to get raging over. Have fun.

    Hate to do this too you but, blizzard say and have always said in all their press releases this about how they count numbers;

    World of Warcraft®'s Subscriber Definition

World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.

In short as off blizzards last press release there ARE 8.5million active subscribers they do not include trial or expired accounts.. where did you get your research from? .
