Building a Linux Gaming machine, need advice on the video card.

hedgewanhedgewan Member Posts: 64
Hello. I have decided to build a computer and only put linux on it. Linux is becoming better and better at gaming and I want to get into it now.

I have purchased every part that I need for my new computer except for the video card. I would like to know if anyone out there uses Linux for games, or knows alot about it. I want to make sure I dont screw up getting something like a Geforce 8800 series. Oh yes, it is imperative that the card is PCI-Express, that is the only slot I have left in my machine.

Thank you.

hahahaha, I'm sorry, I'm still laughing at the words "Linux" and "Gaming" being in the same sentence!

But in all seriousness (If this post isn't a joke) really any card that supports Open GL 2.0 will do. My personal choice of recommended card is the XFX nVidia GeForce 7900GS. But you probably won't need anything that powerful to power a Linux game (chess?)

Not a joke. Well, it may be in this case, but gaming with a *nix machine is perfectly doable.

As for a graphics card, I have a GeForce 7950 GT and it runs anything I can toss it's way. And it only runs $200-250, depending on whether it comes overclocked, or no, and of course the name on the box.
